After the move to Winston-Salem the medical school was renamed the Bowman Gray School of Medicine CBGSMJ in honor of the man whose bequest stimulated the move. During the early years in Winston-Salem the school maintained a hand-to-mouth financial existence with SODA, of the operating expenses coming from medical student tuition payments. Community fund raising was discour- aged because of the concurrent fund drives to finance Wake Forest College's move to Winston-Salem. The fac- ulty physicians twho incidently received no salaryi sup- ported themselves through fees collected from their pri- vate patients, and in turn supported the hospital through contributions to building funds. Unavoidably, debt accumulated. Only through signifi- cant bequests from the Gray family in 1947 and thereafter did the BGSM remain viable. the opportunity and immediately sought the benefactor's und. In the late 1930's it was believed that ten million dollars were needed to established a four-year medical school. But the charitable fund, left in the will of the late Bowman Gray, consisted of only 18,500 shares of RJ, Reynolds Tobacco Co. B Common stock tvalued at 857200001 causing Wake Forest administrators to hesitate. None-the-less, the challenge of moving to Winston- Salem and merging with the NCBH was accepted on August 3, 1939. The stock was used as collateral tor a 1010 interest loan to build a six-story medical school adjoining the hospital, which was completed in September 1941. In 1942 the hospital fulfilled its initial obligation to the venture by completing the West Wing, expanding the hospital to 300 beds. above: This photo of the original on March 1941. created in the early 1950's and enhanced the school's stability by overseeing financial and development mate ters. Despite the financial constraints during the schools first decade, the original bequest of RJR stock tnow valued at several million dollarsl was retained without liquidating a single share. The North Carolina Baptist Hospital also experienced hardships. Chartered to conduct business primarily ltfor the benefit of the sick and needy and to Hsubordinate every other activity and purpose to reach that end , the hospital was frequently overladen with nonpaying pa- tients.
