Dr. Huntley founded the schools residency training pro- gram in pediatric allergy and immunology. Her research, pre- dominantly in that area, yielded seven chapters in textbooks and over sixty papers published in professional journals. Dr. Huntley received the A.B. degree from Mount Holyoke College and the M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. She took residency training at Boston Children's Hospital and Washington, D.C. Children's Hospital and completed fellow- sh? training in pediatric allergy at Duke Medical Center. he had eld two appointments with the National Institute of Health. She served on its Bacteriology and Mycology Study Section and also with the Bureau of Biologics Com- mittee to Study Safety and Efficacy of Bacterial Vaccines. Dr. Huntley died October 18, 1984. Her career is an inspira- tion to aspiring physicians, and she will be sorely missed as a member of the medical community at Bowman Gray. If H X Carolyn Coker Huntley, M.D Lanfvence C. McHenry, Jr., M.D. Neurologist and medical historian Lawrence McHenry died of pancreatic cancer February 22, 1985. His gentle, warm character and contributions as a medical scholar have Earned him a special place in the hearts of many at Bowman ray. Dr. McHenry's interest in medical history was a hallmark of his career. He completely revised and enlarged Garrison's History of Neurology, and it has become the standard text in the field. Dr. McHenry had been appointed archivist and historian of the American Neurologic Association before his death. A lover of old books, especially those on neurology, he donated a significant collection to the Bowman Gray library. A graduate of Pomona College, Dr. McHenry attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at New England Center Hospital in Boston and did fellowships in the field at Tufts University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Dr. McHenry came to Bowman Gray in 1972. His research interests in- cluded the measurement of cerebral blood flow and the treat- ment of multi-infarct dementia. Dr. McHenry will be rememberd as an outstanding physi- cian, scholar and gentleman. All of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine was sad- dened by the untimely death of Carol Hanes, M.D. lclass of '84l on May 7, 1984, interrupting a professional career dedicated to serving others. GROWTH Wake Forest College was founded by the North Carolina Baptist State Conven- tion in 1834 in Wake County near Raleigh. Intended to educate Baptists for the min- istry, the school gradually evolved to take on a larger educational role, becoming a prominent regional college of high aca- demic standards. above: the Alumni Building, completed 1905, housed the medical school from 1905 to 1932. The anatomy lab was on the top floor, in the right front room. g . elm above: The William Amos Johnson Building was named for an anatomy instructor killed in an automobile accident in 1927. The medical school occupied this building from 1932 until 1941. l Wake Forest Colleges economic hardships fol- lowing the Civil War 11861-1 8657 tempted the admin- istrators to establish a medical diploma mill as a means of adding revenue to the college. Because the proper quality of medical training could not be provided due to inadequate money and facilities, the idea was dismissed for about twenty years. ln the Fall of 1902, after nine years of scrutiny and fund-raising, the two-year Wake Forest Medical School was finally established. The first two deans of the medical school, Dr. Fred K. Cooke ttenure 1902-19059 and Dr. Watson S. Fiankin ttenure 1905-1909l, initiated a course of sound growth. A rigorous training program earned the school acceptance into the association of Ameri- can Medical Colleges atter only two years of exist- ence, and in 1908 the school became one of only eleven tout of 1605 U.S. medical schools requiring two years of college work prior to admission, These trends continued during the tenure of Dr. Thurman D. Kitchin, appointed dean in 1919. 7 -'Y-n. left: the first anatomy dissecting room was in the basement of the gymna slum. BGSM '43 The North Carolina Baptist Hospital QNCBHJ in Win- ston-Salem, started by the Baptist State Convention, opened its 88-bed facility in 1923. ln 1935, believing there to be an oversupply of physi- cians, the American Medical Association proposed clos- ing all two-year medical schools. Because ofthis, in 1937, a state commission, with later support from an anony- mous benefactor, investigated the possibility of enlarging one of North CaroIina's two two-year medical schools. The administrators at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill rejected the commission's offer to enlarge their two-year school. They were opposed to the benefac- tor's stipulation that the school be moved to Winston- Salem and mezged with the NCBH. In the late 1930's it was believed that ten million dollars were needed to established a four-year medical school. But the charitable fund, left in the will of the late Bowman Gray, consisted of only 18,500 shares of RJ, Reynolds Tobacco Co. B Common stock tvalued at 857200001 causing Wake Forest administrators to hesitate. None-the-less, the challenge of moving to Winston- Salem and merging with the NCBH was accepted on August 3, 1939. The stock was used as collateral tor a 1010 interest loan to build a six-story medical school adjoining the hospital, which was completed in September 1941. In 1942 the hospital fulfilled its initial obligation to the venture by completing the West Wing, expanding the hospital to 300 beds. above: This photo of the original on March 1941. During the early years in Winston-Salem the school maintained a hand-to-mouth financial existence with SODA, of the operating expenses coming from medical student tuition payments. Community fund raising was discour- aged because of the concurrent fund drives to finance Wake Forest College's move to Winston-Salem. The fac- ulty physicians twho incidently received no salaryi sup- ported themselves through fees collected from their pri- vate patients, and in turn supported the hospital through contributions to building funds. Unavoidably, debt accumulated. Only through signifi- cant bequests from the Gray family in 1947 and thereafter did the BGSM remain viable. Despite the financial constraints during the schools first decade, the original bequest of RJR stock tnow valued at several million dollarsl was retained without liquidating a single share. The North Carolina Baptist Hospital also experienced hardships. Chartered to conduct business primarily ltfor the benefit of the sick and needy and to Hsubordinate every other activity and purpose to reach that end , the hospital was frequently overladen with nonpaying pa- tients. The South Wing, built under the urging and support of the faculty physicians, was primarily to create room for full-paying, private-patient admissions, which streng- thened the NCBH. above: The Flesearch Building and the Vivarium Extension under construction, on the west end of the medical school, are shown here around 1961. Dr. Coy C. Carpenter, who engineered the school's move from the town of Wake Forest, was dean from 1936 to 1963. Succeeding him, Dr. Manson Meads held the post from 1963 to 1971. Appointed in 1971, Dr. Richard Janeway is the current dean of the medical school. All of the deans have been on faculty staff at the BGSM prior to their appointment as dean and Drs. Carpenter and Meads have worked actively in the medical center following retirement. Such characteristics of commitment and long service are unusual among medical school chairmen and deans. Arthur Gregor FAC U LTY N li P , r 7 - .1 ,Z 1, -I Of Teaching No man can reveal to you Aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, Among his followers, gives not of his wisdom But rather of his faith and his lovingness. lf he is indeed wise He does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom. But rather leads you to the threshold Of your own mind. Kahlil Gibran l 113 ' ADMINISTRATION N wtf' Thomas K. She is the Administrative Secretary to Dr. Nat Smith, the Associate Dean for Medical Education. Develop- ing and implementing the medi- cal student curriculum is one of her primary responsiblities. She also coordinates the curriculum for Units Il-IV of the medical student basic science studies. Geri is always receptive to stu- dent lnput regarding exam schedules and is a resource for information about grading poli- cies. Because of her position and openness she has naturally func- tioned as a liaison between facul- ty and students. In the past she has participated in the American Medical Women's Association as well as in student social func- tions. Yet what we love most about Geri is her obvious concern for student welfare. She and Dr. Smith have proven to be important allies when students are troubled. Geri's open door policy has allowed students with a range of difficulties, from academic to emotional, to pass her way in seek of aide. For many in the Senior class Geri has become a close friend and a testimony to the fact that not all role models wear long white coats. Thank you, Geri, for helping and for caring. 164 SPECIAL APPRECIATION The Warp and Weft Their thought is The warp Spun out of Fibers shorn From faculty, Ward, library, Lucy Morcock Milner Held taunt By their minds Retaining, Remembering, R Analyzing, Synthesizing. Weaving between, 4 it G ' L ' e - ' Picking up the Loose threads, Discovering competence here, Compassion there, Insights surprising, Humanity everywhere, Trusting these Separate threads To emerge Genuine and whole cloth. Lucy Morcock Milner - Lucy Milner, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, first came to work for the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1979 as the Project Coordinator for the Curriculum Develop- ment Project on Cancer Prevention for Physician Assis- tants. Prior to that she had taught secondary English in the Durham City Schools and at the Governors School of North Carolina ia summer school for gifted studentsj. Holding a B.A. degree in Philosophy and a M.A. de- gree in Education Lucy has developed skills in sensitive listening, production and editing, enabling her to pro- duce a series of videotapes of conversations with can- cer patients. ln addition, she has edited and authored a number of articles concerning cancer prevention, ,fm-.7 srl, Students are most familiar with Lucy as Hthe test lady. Since 1982 she has been the Student Examina- tions Coordinator. In this position she has added humor and compassion to the testing process. It is not unusual for Lucy to recite some uplifting verse or share a philo- sophical saying prior to an exam, lightening the mood and making the unavoidable more tolerable. The Class of '85 has appreciated Lucy's encourage- ment. Many believe the Warp andthe Weft is an allegory of her interaction with the Class of '85. Thank you, Lucy, for weaving between, picking up, discovering and trusting. 165 THE GRAY MATTER George Limpert - Editor-in-Chief vi Roy Alson - Faculty Wanda Kay Watts - Advertisements 166 2' Bill Rawls - Advertisements, Faculty Dean Gilbert - Seniors .
