This year, we dedicate the Gray Matter to one of these people, Dr. Jimmy Simon. In the short time he has been at this institution, his untiring enthusiasm for and knowledge of pediatrics have inspired us, and his interest in the advancement of our education has been apparent to all. He de- mands the most from his co-workers in patient care, yet is able to maintain an atmosphere most conducive to learning and is a true friend of the student, always available. For these reasons, Dr. Simon has also been voted the outstanding teacher of the year by the class of 1976. We thank him. ern lxht 4 L :qu 1 I 4:4 Q.. Lupton ZOO Years of Medicine 1776 1976 lt would be inadequate to celebrate our na- tion's Bicentennial without considering America's contributions to medicine. In the short history of our country numerous medical events in the United States have had a bearing on international medicine. Although we cannot boast the epoch-creators such as Pasteur, Koch and other transatlantic workers, America has produced several notable record makers with William Beaumont, Walter Reed, Ephraim McDowell, W.H. Welch and others. However, it must be remembered that the sources of the strength of American medicine are to be found in the studies pursued abroad in Great Britain, France and later Germany. In the early Colonial period there were very few physicians or surgeons. Health conditions were horrendous, with onefhalf of the May- tlower's passengers dying within three months of their arrival. For the most part, the only educated persons in the tloundering colonies were the clergy and it is not surprising that the principle palpators and practitioners of medicine also preached from the pulpit. Thus the first American medical publication, a broadside on smallpox, was written by a physician-clergyman, Thomas Thatcher, in 1677. At the beginning of the National period civilization and cultural wealth in America had proliferated considerably and thus the medical field progressed also. The versatile Benjamin Franklin inspired the establishment of the first hospital in the United States in Philadelphia in 1752. As an inventor, Franklin also contributed bifocal lenses to the medical profession. The most famous doctor of the American Revolution was Benjamin Rush, A typical rep- resentative of the Enlightenment, Rush signed the Declaration of Independence. Besides poli- tics, he also espoused in the areas of psychia- try and anthropology. 6 Bvrimmm Rush H745-18131. M. Cfffaf, Certificate of medical proficiency granted by Dr. Cristopln-r Witt to his pupils for medical and astral sciences. Medical education prior to the foundation of medical colleges had been through the preceptorial sys- tem under which the future doctor was apprenticed to an older man for four to seven years. Only a few, such as Benjamin Rush, aug- mented their training by studying in Edinburg, Paris or Germany. By 1775, there were an estimated thirty-five hundred physicians in this country, of which only four hundred held a university medical degree. In 1765 Dr. john Morgan and Dr. William Shipper founded the first medical school in the United States at the College of Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter other fine medical centers de- veloped at Harvard University and New York, the latter training Samual Bard who was physician to George Washington. In the 1860's, the Civil War con- tributed to the degeneration and dissolution of the medical centers that developed in the South. The rapid westward expansion of the country and absence of legal regu- lation lowered medical educational standards. The quality of the medi- cal schools can be reflected by their quantity. There were over four hundred medical schools in the United States in the nineteenth century. It was not until 1930 that the number had been reduced to seventy-six well-qualified institu- tions. 7 i i The Wake Forest College School of Medicine was founded in 1902 through the perseverance of Dr, C.E. Taylor, President of Wake Forest Col- lege. As a two year medical school the first class enrolled 13 students, seven of whom lacked Dr. Taylor's perseverance and failed the first year, In 1941 the school moved to Winston-Salem and be- came a four year medical school associated with North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Along with the S600,000 acquired through a bequest of the late Bowman Gray, the Wake Forest College School of Medicine also acquired his name. Through the shrewd efforts of Coy Carpenter the Bowman Gray School of Medicine was firmly established and accepted 45 students to the four-year school in 1941. With the class of 1976 BGSM has awarded 1161 MD's. a-eflprf-+ X .34 :Zig S l f W-:U If i' .1 'K X09 ,f H 1, 'I ,, yt ' '-1' L, gl '47 N,-Y 4- -' '-Live, ,-2. f 4 , ' 1 2' - . Some notable early pioneers of medicine include Theobald Smith who in 1902 described the phenomenon of anaphylaxis. The advancement of medical re-' search is largely the result of the prodigious efforts of William H. Welch. At johns Hopkins Medical School he encouraged the em- phasis on research methods and research facilities. Welch also was instrumental in formulating policy for the Rockefeller Foundation, founded in 1901, which was to play a prominent part in the de- velopment and sponsoring of research in the United States. At the Bowman Gray School of Medicine there are approxi- mately 107 research projects in progress with grants and contracts totaling 54,463,449 Research ranges from studies on salamanders to squirrel monkeys. Some of the outstanding accomplishments of the research at Bowman Gray include numerous contributions in neurology and medical sonics. The Specialized Center of Research in Arteriosclerosis is one of only thirteen in the nation. Qgnf ,4 i ' x N Kg,-v '-x. ll. 9-AX L 'Q l ,.. C C Q-71 b ts r F ff 4 ' o 5ulf' 4, '97 l v. my IFXA. A Q I Aja' x Clinical Medicine The clinical medicine of the present day developed in the second half of the nine- teenth century as a result of the progress in histology, pathology, and pharmacology. The integration of laboratory results and clinical observation contributed greatly to diagnostic knowledge. Of major impor- tance was the discovery that infectious dis- eases are caused by microorganisms. From the new science of bacteriology scientific medicine developed to achieve its present standing. The tremendous progress of surgery dur- ing the nineteenth century can be attrib- uted to anesthesia, asepsis and localistic pathological anatomy. The famous trial op- eration with ether was demonstrated by William Morton in Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846. Two decades later the last of the great Quaker physi- cians, joseph Lister, tackled the problem of wound infection with carbolic acid. An- tisepsis and asepsis rejuvinated surgery entirely and transformed the gangrenous surgical wards into a better prognostic perspective. The United States also contrib- uted several outstanding gynecological surgeons, including Sims, Emmett, and the Atlee brothers. The first ovariotomy was carried out in the frontier backwoods of Kentucky by Ephraim McDowell in 1809. Technical improvements and inventions contributed considerably to the rapid ad- vance of medicine. 12 'Ss 13 Q, 'T' 7' it 3'i ' ' . . :J are A rw- ,- ' - Pi ,fer l .' ' .. Q . .M Favorite Pastimes Throughout American history physicians have excelled as athletes, authors, historians and in numerous other areas outside the medical realm, Soccer and golf were two of the more popular games played among doctors dur- ing the lSOO's. Tennis in this coun- try was originally played only by lawyers, doctors and merchants. The father of American tennis was Dr. flames Dwight, a Boston physician, Dr. Dwight helped es- tablish the US, National Lawn Tennis Association of which he served as president for 21 years. Dr. Dwight also organized the first Davis Cup competition. Another creditable tennis player, the neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, also found fun and health in ten- nis. Throughout the history of Bow- man Gray, medical students and faculty have organized baseball, basketball, football and soccer teams as well as tiying and sailing clubs. Presently the faculty has a variety of activities to relieve their anxieties and frustrations and de- velop their talents, Although some of the sports have become more sophisticated, in the past thirty years the parties haven't changed at all. Lofland, avid sportsman, effective teacher, capable administrator, and scientist of international reputation. He was a man of gentle understanding, always willing to listen to the problems of students and employees alike, but a man of firm principles, some would say even stubborn, when he felt he was right. He demanded quality in himself and others. This was perhaps seen best in his accomplishments as a teacher and in his persistent dedication to the development of a quality graduate program at Bowman Gray. Dr. Lofland will be missed by the students and faculty, but most of all by those of us who benefited from his leadership. Dr, Richard W. St. Clair Throughout his years with us, Norman Sulkin was always a devoted scholar and teacher. The medical school and the department of anatomy were the center of his life and interest, and respect and con- cern for his students and colleagues were evident at all times. His scholarly research in neuroanatomy will continue to enrich the literature and serve to guide the efforts of future inves- tigators. Dr. Charles E. McCreight 50 be. Hugh B. Lofland, PhD. 'bs PM X R A , julian Martin, Ph.D. iv .XX 1 if Dorothy Ayer Takcn at the qlgwn of a promising academic career, lulian Martins congenial personality gained the esteem of graduate students, co-workers, and fac- ulty, He left a lasting impression on those who were fortunate to know him well. Dr, Carlos Rapela Dr. Alvin Brodish For Z1 years, Dorothy Ayer served as secretary to the Neurosurgical Section, for 18 of those years, she was also secretary to the Chief of Professional Services - in all, a significant part of her life, but also a period in which she could reveal the charac- teristics that made her so popular and such a value able part of the medical center. Her loyalty to those for whom she worked, to the hospital, and to the medical school was fervent and unabashed, Al- though she was kind and considerate to all, she could never tolerate divided loyalties. She was a severe taskmaster for herselfg there were rio bounds to her effort when important work was to be accomplished, and she was recognized as a per- son who could get things done when many others could not, Despite the perfection she expected from herself, she was always diplomatic and courteous. Although many things may have trou- bled her from time to time, one could never detect it from her appearance, All who worked with her were devoted to her and they miss her each day.
