ROBERT COOPER, M.D Throughout our first tour years ofmedical training we have encountered many dedicated teachers who sought to instill in us an appreciation ofthe principles and practice ofmedicine. Their inlluence pervades our present attitudes towards medical care and undoubtably will be reflected in our future practice ofmedicine. With this in mind, the Senior Class dedicates the 1975 Gray Matter to Dt. M. Robert Cooper, a physician who has been integral to this training and who in his approach to medicine most closely embodies and unities the multiple facets ofacademic practice: patient care, medical education, and clinical research. 4 Patient Care The care ofa patient with neoplastic disease demands the best in diagnostic and therapuric skills .5 well as an individual program of emotional and physical support, By meansofa 'team approach' Dr, Cooper utilizes the full range ofprofessional sltillsofthe house-staff, medical and nursing students, and paramedical personnel in an effective problem -oriented delivery ofmedical care. fllecfzcfll Eclfiz Cczfzo in The Hematology-Oncology Division ofthe Department of Medicine maintains an active in-hospital Service and serves asa Regional Oncology Center, As a member ofthis group Dr. Cooper conducts teaching rounds, seminars, and coordinates the primary patient responsibility among housestalf and medical students, In addition to in-hospital education, he joins in aprogram ofregional seminars, telephone conferences, consultation clinics, and civic talks which aid the understanding ofhematological and neoplastic disease by local physicians and laymen. Clinical R656!Z7'L7b Dr. Cooper has the ability to perform pertinent clinical research without losing sight ofthe individual patient. ln conjunction with a coordinated research effort by basic scientists and clinicians in this and other medical centers, he has made major contributions in the areas of white blood cell disorders, the hemoglobinopathies, and immuno- hematology. Through these efforts he has been a contributing author to more than 20 original research papers and responsible lor the identification oftwo new white cell disorders. 5 Pleat -N I ii .,. wr- ' Q 17 4'-.-fel y i , N 31 I , 1.11 llill I' h li N l' ' T ' V ' ' -w-4 - W I' 'g 3a , C N l, , rx g . if-17 '1 x X ' A Y' ' V .' i ., i Jqzvf..
