This edition of The Gray Matter is dedicated to a teacher. lt is dedicated to that one faculty member above all who the Class of l 964 felt contributed most as a teacher toward their education and professional maturity as they became Doctors of Medicine. What ideally denotes the great teacher? The true mark of a great one is how well he creates within the minds of his students the desire to learn. As an intellectual leader he does not seek to force upon his followers the sum total of his accumulated wisdom nor the fruits of his vast and varied ex- perience, instead, he seeks to present in an objective manner concepts and observations and to allow the interested student the opportunity and the challenge of self-education. For him it is not necessary to force wisdom upon his followers. His counsel is much sought after, for, by precept and example he embodies the age old con- cept of the True Physician. As Plato described him, The True Physician is also a ruler having the human body as a subject. The choice ofthe Class of l964 fulfills these re- quirements. He is primarily an academician, the au- thor of more than 75 papers, and his accomplish- ments in this field have brought him national recog- nition and acclaim. He is also a clinician who sees each year several thousands of patients. He has not tried to force wisdom upon us, but his advice and counsel have been much sought after and freely given to those who have taken advantage of his frequent invitation to Come in and sit down. We will leave his influence with an apprecia- tion ofthe importance and rewards of self-education. He has taught us well. lt is, therefore, with great pride and a due sense of appreciation that we present and dedicate this book to Dr. Isadore Meschan.
