What ideally denotes the great teacher? The true mark of a great one is how well he creates within the minds of his students the desire to learn. As an intellectual leader he does not seek to force upon his followers the sum total of his accumulated wisdom nor the fruits of his vast and varied ex- perience, instead, he seeks to present in an objective manner concepts and observations and to allow the interested student the opportunity and the challenge of self-education. For him it is not necessary to force wisdom upon his followers. His counsel is much sought after, for, by precept and example he embodies the age old con- cept of the True Physician. As Plato described him, The True Physician is also a ruler having the human body as a subject. The choice ofthe Class of l964 fulfills these re- quirements. He is primarily an academician, the au- thor of more than 75 papers, and his accomplish- ments in this field have brought him national recog- nition and acclaim. He is also a clinician who sees each year several thousands of patients. He has not tried to force wisdom upon us, but his advice and counsel have been much sought after and freely given to those who have taken advantage of his frequent invitation to Come in and sit down. We will leave his influence with an apprecia- tion ofthe importance and rewards of self-education. He has taught us well. lt is, therefore, with great pride and a due sense of appreciation that we present and dedicate this book to Dr. Isadore Meschan. SHALITA Editor Business Manager The Bowman Gray School of Medicine has recently begun a major expansion program which, when completed, will almost double its facilities and enrollment. lt is fast growing and taking its place as one of the great medical centers of our country. lt deserves to be represented by the best which we, its graduates and future graduates, have to offer. One of the means by which we represent ourselves to other schools is through our publications, for by them we reflect, in part, the attitudes, abilities and achievements of our student body. This is especially true in regards to our yearbook because the story which it has to tell is told mainly by pictures. ln the past we have been bound by necessity and tradition to a fairly nondescript series of annuals, produced with insufficient funds by students with little time to spare for such endeavors. ln general, however, we have done well for a student body of less than 200 students, and a yearbook staff of as few as two persons. Unfortunately, our basic philosophy has been that of so many yearbooks--of cramming as many pictures as possible into as small a space as possible with little regard to context or continuity. lt has been a philosophy of ex- pediency. We have again this year published a book with funds in- sufficient to carry out all our plans, and we can assure you that most of the work of doing so has fallen upon two stu- dents who have had little time to spare for it, ln producing this edition of The Gray Matter, however, we have attempted a more organized approach in telling our story. Our book is divided into three parts, PERSPECTIVE, FOCUS and RE- FLECTIONS, each representing some aspect of VIEWPOINT. 10' Q -e4..1u.,: i-2: fea',+.3f1.-fgapgigzig gg- .155-2- ,I H . , , , g ' ' ' 'RW ' 'KT Wim A' 'I 'I . FOCUS brings into view the people ond deportments which ploy the mojor role in instructing us, os well os the vorious student groups with which we hove come in contoct ond of which we hove been o port. lt is, I believe, the first yeor In which we hove succeeded in obtoining ond printing o formol portroit of every student in both the medicol ond poromedicol schools. The lost section, REFLECTIONS, is o bockwords look through thot well used retrospectoscope, recolling some of the things which we hove seen ond done olong the woy. It ends, os our four yeors in medicol school themselves end, On ci note of nostolgio. There is humor mixed with seriousness os well os on occosionol Pointed jest, but the whole thing is meont to be token in the spirit of fun. There ore very few words in our book. And I thought ot the cops ond the treotment troys, And the letters RN. I would sign. I thought of the uniforms white os con be, And the pin with the letters engroved. Yet, how could I know, or how could l see Thot nursing's o rood thot you poved. It isn't your nome, it isn't your looks, Or your voice, or your hoir or your eyes, It isn't just morks, or it isn't just books, Or the eorly hours you rise. lt's the smile thot o potient hos when you're done lt's the 'Thonk you' he gives for his life. lt's the cry of the newborn os he becomes one Ot this greot new world ond its strife. lt's the mother whose tomily owoits her return Or the fother who's too young to die. lt's the 'big' ond the 'little' things thot you leorn lt's the mony times you osk 'why?'. At hospitals and medical outposts a long way from the classroom, medical students learn to cope with unfamiliar diseases, help to provide much-needed medical services to people in underdeveloped areas of IRAN... the world, and contribute to international under- standing and good will. I - This unusual opportunity to work and study in for- eign countries is offered to students through the Foreign Fellowships Program of Smith Kline 8: French Laboratories. Administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the program has enabled 123 students to work in 40 different countries during the past four years. Iunior and senior medical stu- dents are eligible to apply for Fellowships, which provide for an average of 12 weeks' work abroad to be completed before internship.
