Kelsey, M.D. To him we respectfully dedicate this book in appreciation for his efforts to help lay the foundation for our future service to our fellowmen to be in the best tradition of medical practice. Page six Oeolcatlon nga SCUCII R-5.4 r' E , 1958 The history of the class of 1962 began back in the shrouded mist of 1958, when, like a flock of sheep, we were herded into the amphitheater. There Bowman Cray's own Chief Cheer- leader and Pep Squad president taught us the first verse of the BGSNI Fight Song: Now, it you have any problems at all, feel free to drop by and chat about them . . Problems we had in abundance: biochem diets QR. Siewers, prunes, and acute gastric dila- tationl, big brown jugs, histiologic sections idratl esophagus or vagina?Jg and neuroanatomy C KVith the clinical picture given, as close as I can figure, the lesion must be about 235 miles north-northeast of Kernersvillenl. XVe learned the classic pathology translations: This is an ex- tremely interesting slice tl have not the vagucst notion of what this isnig and This tumor is apparently delicately encapsulated tl have just stuck my thumb through it J, Several members of the class learned that they could get in three extra holes of golf after physiology lab by quietly clamping the dog's endotrachial tube thirty minutes after the experiment began. Wednes- day afternoons off were a lost cause and several Friday lectures were cut short due to certain addictions to T.V.'s Huckleberry Hound. After a three month intermission, we returned as sophomores. ln Pathology ll, we learned of such weird and interesting things .is Eleanor Roosevelt cells , i'Rocking Xlounted Spotting Fever , and the intimate relationships between the gonococcus, salpingitis, douche bags, and flagpoles. The hemorrhoid incidence increased, and bets were placed on who had the thickest buttock callus pad. Nluch admiration was expressed for the designer of the new building, whose genius conceived the placing ofthe library directly over both the dog quarters and the buzz saw room. Toxicology was known as Uncle XVillie's Kiddies' Hour-witty stories and witty say- ings for youth of all ages . Spring arrived and with it chaos, masquerading as cleven different courses. It was quite a spring. Dogs were boiled and rabbits anastomosed in surgery, Live birth rates were calcu- lated, discussed, and just plain cussed in Preventive Nledicine. Students were seen in a living tableau representing internal rotation: Put your arms up in a circleg you're the introitus, now, l'm the kid, and I come crawling down and around like this! Physical diagnosis is left to the imagination. In lune State Boards provided an interesting little break, with long quizzes, C-ino's, the Ra- leigh Room, and Driscoll's 30 XIPH. enema on water skis. We retumed to face clinical med- icine with new whites, shiny black bags, and sweaty palms. XVith trepidation and clean trousers, we reached the KVest Hoorsg the fear remained, but the clean trousers vanish forever with our iirst gastric lavage. YVe soon became life members in the see one-do one society. XVith aplomb and childish glee we tackled the highly revered L,P., f- ,ff , Page eight 1952 tlxx' F-xl.-x x.xtlxx'tx'r, .xml llxx' fx'xxwtxA.x!ixwxxs of Dx' Lf.xxxhn x txxlw Xxc xx'x'x'x' mxt tlxxx.x1'tx'xl lux rl Fvltx .xml I. lf, prvpx txxmw tlxx'x'x'. ox' xl.xxxlxtx-xl lxx Dx-.xxx Cxxxx 1- .xxlxlx-fl sxxlM.xxxu' txx xxxxr px'xxlx-sxxxx1x.xl II1k'lll lux .xpplxxuxf .xml clxxvlwxx-L'x'll .xgglxxlxlmtxxxxx txtx xx XX Iixxxx uf Exl Sxxttuxfx ulflxx'-l'oxxxt-l'mxtxxx'-l'l.xxx-lxxr-Cxxpxrxg-xx'xtlx-lfx'ox-xvxlxlx-sn .xml lll'Illlt'!Illy xl.xm1,- lx-xl um' lx'-N xxx tlxx' wx xml sxxwxy xl lxxxrxxxlx-xlxgx' xxxrrxxxxxxxlxxxg lx-ss Xlm'x'x'xlx!lxs Sucxxxxxl XX wt lnxx- , . . , . lx'x'x'xxv.'x' llxvxxm Lxlvlx' Xxlxxx umxxlxl xlx-xxx xxxxr x-nxxx'.xQx XXX' xxcrx' tlxx' l1x'.xx'x- mxxxlx xx'lxxm xl.x1lx p.xlx1x-xl flxx' tlxrxxstx xxf llxxlxwfs .xml lm cxx-lx.xll xlxxlux l.xx-x-xl tlxx' lxxrrrux' xxl' LlL'NL'l'IlllllLf xtmxls to Tlxx' Kvlsx-H, .xml m.x1x- fxxllx xlxxlxl.xxx'xl xxxxx' Lllilldl xlx'xIx'1'ltx' xxx ll-xll Lxxxxrtxxx-xl ulixxxl-tlxx--cx-rxxxv' cxxxxtvsts Xl.xxxx lxlIUNXIlL'l'.lNlL'x l1L'L'.lINK' .l15l5.lI'l'l1l 'I' cv.xI'l1I'Illl'I' xlL'II1xlllNtl'Lltk'tl .x pl'x'uxLxxp.xti1mxx xxltlx lx k'.lI'lX vlxllxllxxxxxxl .xml xx-xxx.xl lxlxtxxrix-N, H.xx'roxxt, tlxv .'xI'IIlk'I1l.ll1, :.xx'v mxxx' xlx-ptlx tru ilxx' xlx-fixxltxxmxx X xxl pxxmtxx lxtx xml Nxm Hu Kllllllxl lxlx xxxpcrxmw xxxtlx lxix xlx-t.x1lx'xl kIxrxxx'lx-xlgx' ul llltl'HU,K'll '.l .. .. ...A Il.lI'L'UNlN ltlIL'll uxxxluxwxl tlx.xt lxx' lx.xxl lc.xx'm-cl lf .xll lux' XX.lfL'lllllf, Sax llxxntub Tlxx- x xnxx' Qxx-xx' xlxxxI'lx'r .xml tlxx'xx0x'lxixxQlx0x1l's xlruxx' lwxxgx-x' .xx xx x- xxxoxul txwxx .xrxl tlx.xt lx.xlluxx'x-xl 10.11 ul lvuuxxxxxxxg IX' xulx. In ministering to suffering I would learn The sympathy that in thy heart did burn. Take, them, mine eyes, and teach them to perceive The alalest way each sick one to relieve. Guide thou my hands, that e'en their touch nzay prove The gentleness and aptness born of love. Bless thou my feet, and while they softly tread May faces smile on many a sugererls bed. Touch thou my lips, guide thou my tongue, Give me a work in sermon for each one. Clothe me with patience, strength all tasks to bear, Crown me with hope and love, which know no fear, And faith, that coming face to face with death Shall e'en inspire with joy the dying breath.
