An explicit order is inherent in these neural reactions Over the lapse of days which stretch into years. THE CRAY MATTER, the must mystical of essenses, receives the distillation of study and practical CYpL'l'lL'I1L't', transforming the novice into a Doctor of Medicine. and then into a mature physician. XVe began appropriately - queued up outside the controllers office. where for the first and last time, we all paid tuition on time. We entered with am- bition, economically unstable, intellectually unsure, but with firmness of purpose. Now, economically disrupt, intellectually confused, but with some re- alization of our true capabilities. we leave. In be- tween. we were the Class of '61. YVe were a pawn of change. The school we leave bears little resemblance to the one we entered. and the changes in architecture were paralleled by equal- ly drastic changes in curriculum. The specialty quar- ter has come and gone. Underclassmen hopefully expect the senior thesis to follow a similar course. We wish them luck. XVhile each announcement that came from the administration produced wide ram- ifications. the most dramatic was the deep purple glow that immediately issued forth from Squire Bick- ley's arching forehead. At First we were serenely dedicated and accep- tive, but as the 20 foot chart on ATP production was unveiled to our innocent eyes. our assurance fell a hit and our innocent eyes blurred. By the time we had absorbed the shock of histology, which turned out to be an introductory course to physiology. pharmacology, zoology, and the history of medicine, and had sliced our unwilling way through Anatomy, we were in fact, as XVarren Andrew, M.D., PhD., termed it, spastic, Most of us survived these lean years, fortunately, and many owe it all to the dawn- ing of Spring Quarter, when we had more time to practice our Yogi, punch punching bags, or maybe even voodoo our hostilities away. Throughout all of this we managed somehow to become well-known at the local night spots. YValt Hard kept us informed of happenings in the world of sports with his weekly news bulletinsf' and the Buies found each other amidst the branches of the abdominal aorta. XVe moved on to the pink and blue world of path- ology, and to physiology. where performance de- pended primarily on prior training in engineering. In the afternoons, we passed through microbiology and became thoroughly contaminated on our way to the golf course and tennis courts. The two Fer- nandos arrived andkadded to both the social and political aspects of the class. Unfortunately for us and them. they returned too soon to their native land. ..fg:34r.U,j5r, ,N .35q,.5p,,,,- xi.. '- ,..X-.z-.a.uu,..5:.h-.-...3... -.l,,..,5. ..,.5. Though tugged at from many directions and expected to know everything, she seems always unhurried, pleasant, and gracious. She meets every student in a manner of sincere interest, and has often been observed to anticipate our problems before they occur. Katherine Davis, though not involved in our academic enlighten- ment, has taught us much about the basic, human values which every physician must learn. She is to us an outstanding example of the personal touch in a world prone to forget that important virtue. The Class of 1961 dedicates this volume to her, in respect- ful admiration and appreciation. 7 .Vfi 7 D l , ,-il: . -yji -17 :ji...:.:4' - ' -.5 1 I ,. r ,. ,. I M155 SUE XYALKER XII 'HW A JOURNEY JUST BEGINNING 'Ihe sun was shining brightly on that .second day of September 1958 when seventy seven of us mosed into Victoria Courts and the Nurses Home as Freshmen nursing students Some of us had traveled far and some of us h1d come only a few miles to begin this a new chapter in our lives NVe each had different hopes and different expectations for the next threc years but within us was a mutual desire to be a nurse That first evening many different emotlons toward tlus new experience were being felt Some of us were too excited to unpack some too homesick to unpack and all of us trying to control thc butterflys , that were jumping around ln our stomachs under control That first exemng marked tl1e beginning of many friendships and many xntnguxng and inspiring fellow slups of fun and work It marked the begin mng of study of achiexements and of drslppomtments f learning and growing into morc mature responsible women Vever would we forget this night vet newer would we 1ga1n be the same mdniduals Strange how much 1 sxmhol can mean' Th It first day in our not too starched blue 1nd white umfomis and crisp white caps we walked with an extra step of pride and detennlnatlon A small p1rt of our dream was coming true yet we all knew th1t hard work and plenty of studs 115 ahead XV1th our chms held upright we marched forward during those months our eagemess to learn show mg through and the light of leamed confidence beginning to shine on The approach of the Christmas Season brought m 1m good tlmes carollng md gomg to Christmas partrcs together before those wonderful two weeks of s1c ltlon at home A much as we loved being with our families at Cllf1NfI1llN wc found we missed our roommates 1nd fnends Nhth mused feelings we retumed to NCBH to continue our lournev of leammg Knees shaking and with a silent priser in our l1e1rts wc gave our first lIl1ECflOI'l Every dav there was something new to learn some f'lSLlI'ldfIIlL chselse or procedure lhout which to inquire Never will we forget our first cathetenzltlon our days joumey through the operating room with our surgical patient and the flrst moment we really felt 1 pirt of the health team xvlth summer camc the end of scheduled studs hours but not studv VVe awoke with the birds to go to our seven oclock classes Our summer was not all study however for we took full 1dx1nt1ge of all swimming and sun bathing., opportunities Also with summer came the rob of moxrng to our beautiful new apartments at Twin Castles The 1dded distinction of being juniors and having Little Sisters gave us thc courage to yourney into our speciahtles with confidence First cune the diet kitchen which involved calculating diets Ind reading 1nd serving meals Then came the operat mg room with its intricate and precise methods of stnct technlquc Frsclnatrng obstetrics cune next to guide our mother instincts into imaginary reality From obstetrics ch 1lleng1ng pediatrics showered us with fomiulas croupettes, IV fluids our growth and development charts and read mc 1 story Then packing our bags again we 1oumeyed to ll llelgh for our psychiatric affiliation As juniors wc also hid the pleasure and burden of pro ducmg thc Spring Follies We worked hard to make this thc hcst cxcr and our efforts were rewarded by a large LIlfl1llNllNflL lUlllLDL6 With the money eamed from our I-olhcs wc presented thc seniors with their Junior Senior Irom lt Crlylyn Isscltrmcnt reigned over Twin Clbtleb as the time drew nc1r for our Bl 1ck Bmd Supper Those marvelous feelings of worth 1nd iccompllshment were too bountiful to hold md excrywherc wc proudly showed off our symbol of scmonts 1nd ichiexement With each passing day of our list ,Elf wc realized how much we had leamed and how much we stlll did not know We were soon to graduate and leave our student days as p nrt of our past profitable discouraging challenging and provoking pist It was frightening yet thrilling to realize that soon we would be gradulte nurses awaiting the final test wc re 1l17c-cl th it were it not for three years of interest and guldxnce from our families and instructors we would be f ir from our dre 1n1ed goal Our hearts beat with appreciation and we drew in 1 deep fresh breath of new found determmat ion to he tl1e best nurse we could possibly be NX nth our he 1ds held high we walked down that church usle in our solid white umfom1s to recite the Florence 'Nightingale Pledge XV1th more appreciation and understand mg for our chosen profession than we had possessed threc selrs ago wc proudly repe1ted those immortal words I solemnly pledgc myself before God and in the presence of this assemblv Each of us would tr1vel a different path after this day of grlduatxon Each would realize different and individual ,coils E1ch would h1ve her own professional rourney to begin building on those years of preparation excitement tr11l drscouragements and personal fullfillment and growth A
