For medical students and caterpillars alike, there Comes fl great time of metamorphosis, when out of coeoons of feverish waiting, bright new wings are flexed. From the first rungqof the medical ladder, the Senior Class of Nineteen-Hundred and Fifty-Nine raises its head above the confusion of new green fnery to pre- sent, with enthusiasm, the . . . 1 I ii V E w b I l L, THE BOWMAN GRAY SCHOOL I I V J OF MEDICINE OF VVAKE FOREST COLLEGE xb f 7 , P Ai' H GRAY ATTER 1959 GEORGE K. Onset of this condition dates to about four years ago when with our own hot, sweaty little hands, trembling with enthusiasm, we planted ourselves in this Womb of the Medical Arts. First came the pre- cynical years. Solemnly we busied ourselves urinating in large brown bottles, starving little white mice, and muttering wisely about the in- feriority of the sodium ion. This academic serenity was temporarily broken when young John Hines breathed himself into alkalosis-a medical reality in our world of ping pong and polypeptides. VVatch it, Hines! How about holding that Wh it does it say on the next page, Kimel? I think I see bone. bottle a little closerlv S ILLN ESS The Voice of the Turtle led us from the land of the living, and our greasy fingers turned forty pages a day while they performed the most thorough strip show on earth. Spirits ran high as we excavated the gore of the dead, for this was the true initiation Pleasure soon became a serious pursuit, and among Phi Chi, Phi Rho, and Saturday Afternoon Drinking Society members the word 'biochem- istryu meant an emulsion of sex and alcohol. This was the Colden Age of beer barrels and cigar swallowing and improvised poems by Holland. The Thomps was at large, and now respectable scholars then answered to Hungry, 'KLappy, Poochy, and Dad, The Demon Docs was a team that wore academic supporters and won Pity trophies. Yeah, I know it's working. but where does the gin come out?,' I dc Roosevelt 8llf'KVLlf'.l, vnlt knowg mavlw l woulalnt recognize Klrs. Restful moments of relaxation were always greatly cherished. ! K 4' J e, 'Z . , .- Y f X ,,, . P XI X vi -4 3 f 2 I .4 s - , , s 1 5. xx! X. . . 7 C , X Nr- 1 !S,X In the OPD, things once held inconceiv- able quickly became routine. At last! A classic case of the dreaded navel lint diseaselu As Sophs we leamed to tell which end of Mrs. Roosevelt resembled a josh Tumage cell, and other more specific matters. The blight hit us all, Claude had Hodgkins, Quinn had heart attacks, and Kimel became a Giant Wheal-curs- ing Flemming all the way. We suffered through treadmills, tilt-tables, and dog- blood baths to the tune of guffaws from down the hall. It was a very bad year for rabbits, and our flawless surgery sped many a bunny away from the cares of this world. Suddenly we had reached the age of clinical puberty, and were cut adrift on the wards, seemingly without a paddle. The pa- tients were real and ours to poke and ponder. Having extracted all their juices, we withdrew to the joys of smearing blood, boiling urine, poling about in feces, and all such manner of sport. The natural history of history-taking: As sophomores . . . As juniors . . In these pursuits we were joined by three refugees from the Badlands and a distinguished Dutch Venapuncturist. And there was the Great XVar. Under the glorious leadership of Cen. Jesus Jones we went forth for two years to do battle with the Nursing and House Staff. Let us not forget the unsung heroes of these routs, such as the Iunior Varsity Surgeons, et al. There were martyrs at every step, be they the victims of Hematology Clinic, Nlatrimony, the New Library Reich, or Religious Focus XVeek. Yet we survived. Ruling out ourselves as the Bible Belt's answer to the Beat Generation, our present diagnosis is Infant Physicians, confused and distressed, yet possibly viable. Our prognosis according to Dr. Mann is great, really great, As seniors , . pq. Z. e Ancient tribal custom, now forbidden by current missionaries. Strong leadership and active participation have brought about a high level of organization and function which has resulted in many excellent pro- grams of worthwhile interest, a working system of communication between adminis- tration and student body, and an improved and expanded system of committees which cover practically every facet of the stu- dent's life. 55.1, ,, n.. g VIA Many will remember the fascinating discussion helcl by Dr. Corbett Thigpen. personal physician to the Three Faces of Eve. No less interesting was Dr. Nlorris Fishbein, who spoke on Fifty Years of Nledical Progress, with much good humor and experience. In Xlarch of this year, the Bowman Cray Chapter played host to representatives of twelve southeastern meal- ical schools when the district meeting was held here. NVe faced our new task with a strong ego, hut apprehensive of what was in store for us. As we sat at Miller Park eating hamburgers and singing we knew the next three years would not be a picnic but rather a constant challenge for us, NVe began classes and soon learned nursing was far more than what we expected, and we faced our chosen career with eager anticipation-still feeling quite unsure of ourselves. Flower arranging seemed at first to he a very important part of our school, and we shall always remember our feelings of insecurity with our Hirst patient contacts. XVc learned to make beds, to take blood-pressures, to give cncmas. preps and injections, to do shampoos. haircuts, manicurcs and other odd jobs-all a part of nursing. YVake Forest College came to XVinston-Salem the same year we did, and we rolled out our red carpet to welcome them. Many of us had our eyes open to catch some lucky college boy. XVe began our Anatomy classes and filed into buses each Saturday morning to go to Xkake Forest to learn all we could about the world's most fascinating machine-the human body. its intricate parts and how they operate. XVe learned then that though we had mastered flower arrang- ing, we still had a lot to learn about nursing. Spring Follies came early that springg we let our hair down Ca few put it upl, and we had a wonderful time, the dances, the trash-can band. the songs and the beauty queens all. Other highlights of spring were the thrill of capping, our first eight hour day on the wards and of course, other activities such as picnics, fraternity parties, and sunbathing on Shuffle Board Beach. Summer came and we began our specialties of nursing. NVe traded our blue and white uniform for a little green gown and entered the bewitching operating room. XVe traded our smile for a solemn frown and though concealed by a mask we were rather frightened. XVe leamed we knew nothing about sterile technique except to the echo of drop it. How- Page Eighty ever, we learned to scrub, and scrub we did. XVe scrubbed our hands, instruments. carts, walls, and everything. On another unit-Obstetrics-we operated differently, concealed behind our masks were smiles as we watched the miraculous birth of a child. XVe concentrated again on good technique and complete care of our new mothers through channels to reach even their emotional needs, NVe had some weddings, and some of our students began raising their own families: our instructors did also. The children on Pediatrics taught us new communications, their smiles, goos. and cries when something went wrong as we learned their growth and development. Christmas on Pediatrics, our T E fistulas, and our precious experiences soon passed, sooner than anticipated and it was time to leave Pediatrics. At Dix Hill we adjusted well to our emotions by seeing many different forms of human behavior. Our id, ego, and super-ego was at work keeping us well balanced. Our hours of work and study have been pleasantly spaced with dances, banquets, parties, picnics, tennis and hikes. At last we were seniors, we added a stripe to our caps, a beautiful black band. XVC tried our luck as clinic nurses, emergency room nurses, nurses with the blood mobile, public health nurses and even head nurses on the units where we worked, In our classes we heard of other jobs like office nursing, industrial and military nursing. Nursing was bigger than ever. NVe evaluated our three years training as the happiest of our lives. As we tried on our white uniforms we knew it was not the end of our learning hut the beginning of a wonderfully promising career. Many doorways were opened to us and we could choose the one most appealing. The other fields of nursing would be recalled often with pleasant memories of our experiences. XVe had spent our years of training, too soon they had slipped by, the classes were over but the learning had only begun. We pledged again to our career- Reverently do I pledge myself . . . oi Q , 1 ' ' . t 95 'Q 1' - '. 1 - - Jr ' l..':F' ov M Q e ,- A a X1 ii W sa X. ,. . v .
