'N 'I W, Ni l cfs-Q e ' ABSTRACTS: CLASS OF '58 The following includes not the complete story of the sixteenth graduating class of Bowman Gray but a few abstractions from our voluminous memoirs, good and bad, col- lected over the four years, which we have chosen to remind you and us of yourselves and our- selves. A number of the selections will be obscure to some while meaningful to others. At any rate, perhaps you will not become discouraged as we may have been our first day when Dr. Carpenter directed the greeting committee with a few hilarious pearls. Moose Morehead was there clad in white bucks-we aren't sure that he isn't wearing the same pair today. Nell Benton was wanting to tell us that her end of the hall was not a student lounge, but we' hear recently that the new building will contain, in addition to animal quarters, a library. Without further ado, we soon thereafter found ourselves in class without the benefit of having registered for courses. fEven Mr. Parker has since gotten into the modern swing, and now we register our check booksl. Beginning with biochemistry and ping-pong,' there was doubt as to in which we were achieving the greatest proficiency. However, Steve Gee took the honors in both. Self-experimentation added little to our knowledge of the relationship between prunes and liver function, but it did establish the permanent place of the former as a cathartic. At Dr. Swanson's insistance, we learned to keep an eye on the ubiquitous hydrogen iong and. yet, we look with disfavor on the chloride shift. Simultaneously, came the ultimatum ,that we would not begin the study of anatomy next quarter, but that histology is anatomy. We cringe at the thought of the painful blackboard portrait of the WBC, and the Big Turtle's bewilderment, Is that the front or side view? By the way of a naive Salem College lass came the information that a classmate had an IQ of 170. We figured this was about average for our class. . Artistic talent blossomed forth from unexpected sources during gross anatomy, producing a number of classic anatomical sketches. We wonder if it were not the brilliance of C. P. Deal in exhibiting his startling image of the foramen magnum COD that earned him a seat at Harvard. It may be of passing interest that Carter's father had worked for the 'iPudendal Life Insurance Company. Anatomy fell behind us as Savannah unceremoniously wandered in to load his cart with twenty-eight undissected lower extremities. It was during this period that a notorious and powerful organization became definitely established-the Executive Committee. It was the function of this body that withstood the mental collapse of our class. No biochemistry, neuroanatomy, or physiology exam was too tough for this committee to handle. The coming of the Spring quarter was accompanied by the new concept from Dr. Tuttle -what there was to learn in the coccus lab should be learned in twenty minutes. Profes- sors have their ways of illustration, now when we think of a maligant cell, a view of Mrs. Roosevelt becomes real. About this time citrus fruits enjoyed tremendous popularity at Salem College dances, no one suspecting that their palatibility and potentiality had been enhanced by generous parenteral administrations of ethanol. Sophomore physiology was marked by attempts at mastery of the mechanical monsters of Swifty's machine shop. For fear of injustice to this phase we should pass lightly on, careful not to incite a sudden surge of adrenalin? epinephrine? norepinephrine? Which is it? However, we should not neglect Mr. Parsons, for it was he who taught us that Ah, respiration is, Ah, very important. Woe be unto Dr. Green, for surely little Willy John's determination of the electrical axis would have been good enough for Einthoven. We were all impressed in pathology by yallar nodools, diseases of chil'ren, brown- red-black mottled gray-green-orange livers and the curb market display of fresh classic cases. The unanswered question in pathology remains, Was Crist really asleep or just laying for Dr. Klein? The class indeed expresses deep regret for the latter's departure. And out of San Joaquin Valley came galloping Sam Bass, screaming, Coccidioides! The basic sciences over, the squabble over whites unsettled, with stethoscopes just like Dr, Bob's, and with a diffuse coarse tremor we began the third year clinical clerkship. The Executive Committee was forced into oblivion with the conversion of the Peacock into a gro- cery store. There subsequently developed a marriage fad, the Wives' Club becoming the powerful policy making unit. ' With our coming onto the wards the 5 o'clock rule was proclaimed. The House Staff trounced upon it as if they were having a Boston Tea Party. Dr. Carpenter announced, as he met the Sophomore Class for the first time, that he would concentrate on external affairs and leave Coach Meads to do the ball carrying. Oh. QX O We made efforts on the wards, as Dr. Yount suggested, as if we knew what we were doing. One of our more brilliant students, it is rumored, therefore proceeded to pass a Foley on a corpse. And more than one received phone calls from Mt. Airy. The wrath of Dr. Hutaff was felt by those who forgot to ask about Cousin Minnie's cough, and Dr. Meads had little sympathy for those who didn't do a Gram stain. Dr. Flores had wrath and no sympathy-usually felt to be characteristic of the job. An outstanding favorite of all was Graybeal's elementary dietetics, the course that no one flunks-that is, if you were present for roll-call and drank your skimmed milk like teacher said. Dr. Norfleet presented tales from the South Pacific, teaching that the differential diagnosis of hematuria and dysuria in this area includes wandering leaches. From dermatology came the impression that the body is only skin deep, and consists mostly of kodachrcme slides on which the anatomical site and the lesion is obscure. We learned of many medical entities, such as, gland trouble, leakage of the heart, spinal meningisus, bronichal trouble, side pleurisy, walkin' pneumonia, old age, itching teeth, and an obviously sick child. Our class was the first to be exposed to the rigors of radiology by Dr, Meschan with his monumental text. By the end of the course even the more fearless, including Reeves, had weakened under the salesmanship and had purchasd the book rather than face the final with- out it. The mortality rate was high anyway-to say nothing of morbidity. But that's the way it went in the junior year. Paranoia was rampant. There was an urge to recreate the defiant House Officer. Surely, the senior year would bring brighter days. It did for the most part-at least doing lab work was not the student's primary function -being johnny-on-the-spot was. Officially, it was announced that our successors would be retained for an extra quarter in the junior yearg and construction of the Medical School addition would begin. Behold! it did. Proving to all that Bowman Gray is out for the forward look, the Department of Experi- mental Medicine was established and a D. V. M. was brought in to set the M.D. experimen- talists straight. Our hats are off to Dr. Clarkson, the consultant of the year. Attitudes and personalities were not significantly altered in this period-just more firmly implanted. Senior surgery was encountered with the usual anxiety, mild and severe. However, a few completed the quarter without cerebral scarring and even considered taking a surgical residency. At any rate, the class agreed that Dr. Deaver could not possibly have held his own retractor ever. It was concluded that the satisfactory placement of such an instrument is best achieved without visualization, at arm's length, with the left hand of a right handed person, standing behind and pulling away from the surgeon. On private medicine the story spread that Dr. Sawyer had a built-in diastolic murmur in one ear and a pericardial friction rub'in the other. Between spooks in the medical OPD, the day was brightened over Curt's bitter brew tif it's good 'nough for the Redskins, it's good 'nough for youl by the applicable tales of Square-Jaws, the man in the know. OB-GYN remained the students' dilemma. The vanishing cervices, contracting uteri, and Miss Reich have taken their toll from the more patient and persistent. The nearer June, the greater the surge of political intrigue became. Indeed, it was proper, for the selection of the Man of the Year was a delicate important task. There were many worthy candidates, of course, but some troopers had been stung worse than others, and recog- nition of this was necessary to meet the needs of the traumatized. The institution of this award again depicts the forward look of Bowman Gray, for without it Dr. Lamm would have his lap full of potty troubles. - By the Spring of '58 our class had progressed satisfactorily and was proliferating rapidly with twenty-six married couples having produced seventeen children, six more were being incubated, and an unknown number were sweating it out. A four day expense-paid visit to New York City and the laboratories of Lederle and Squibb was generously provided by these companies, We are much obliged to them. Each graduating class leaves behind a personality peculiar unto itself. No class, however, completes its clinical clerkship at Baptist Hospital without an indebtedness of great magnitude to the nurses. Whether student or graduate, we are thankful to all equally for their tolerance, interest, help, and encouragement to say nothing of their hard labor. They have witnessed our first IV's, physicals, pelvics, operations, and deliveries, always with the same attitude no mat- ter what was going wrong- go on, you're doing great. Obviously, it must take a grade A constitution. Certainly, these women bear well a tremendous task. ' iz 35 3 -I use-:.:r 7 ....:::'i' .. ,K . Q is i if ., ' ., - - .G B ,., . . In the course of a formal medical education a body of students sits before and admires 1 great many men and women who come to them in an effort to teach and influence them in the basic principles of sound thinking in the practice of medicine. From this impressive array of figures, each having taken his turn to guide the students, indeed, it is the difficult task to choose one who has not unquestionably passed something of value to every member of a class. Certainly, then, even when making effort to qualitate and quantitate this attribute one is faced with a startling assembly of outstanding medical educators. Adding friends of the stu- dent, good fellows, and classic personalities hardly narrows this aggregation of an enviable faculty. What then has impelled the 16th graduating class of Bowman Gray to acknowledge Dr. Robert L. Tuttle with the presentation of this book? Before the students with their varied convictions and fantasies, this man has presented an honest philosophy which without reservation, preiudice, or exception has gained the respect and appreciation from each member of the class. Several years have passed since we were honored with the time of Dr. Bob Tuttleg but, though the time was relatively short, he left us to go on with something more than a working knowledge of the ornery staphylococci. Though some of us may not immediately recall the complexities and perplexities of a satisfac- tory specific and sensitive STS, we recall that Dr. Tuttle had a lot to say and said it in a short time. For many his class was the beginning of the end of memorizing, spoon-feeding, and grade consciousness. His characteristic philosophy has been cultured in many of us and is being incubated in others. It is with admiring eyes that we watch, at present, the culmination of our fondest hopes-the construction of a larger and more adequate Medical School. Of course, all this could not have been ac- complished without the willing and able assistance of the entire administration. This chapter, having recently been among the first to consolidate its local student medical society with SAMA, is a provocative example of student organization, being followed by many student bodies elsewhere. The National SAMA president having been of this school three years ago, the Chapter now boasts being represented by G. T. A. Morris, the National SAMA Treasurer. Chernoff, Asso- ciate Professor of Medicine at Duke University, talking with various members of the Bowman Gray faculty after presenting The Clinical and Genetic Aspects of Human Hemoglobin. This program was sponsored by Sigma Xi and the Bowman Gray Medical Society, faculty organizations with which SAMA cooperates in scheduling a wide variety of programs of interest to students and faculty. The breadth of SAMA activity engulfs many of the interests and concerns of the student body, griefs, loans, internships, insurance, health, and pleasures not being excluded. SAMA continues to enter and support its team in the basketball league-the spirit of this endea- vor was exemplified in the 1957 season by the presenta- tion of the Sportsmanship Trophy to the Demon Docs. SAMA's remarkable contribution, however, is un- questionably the lecture series. The quality of these pro- grams speak for themselves-'Symposium on Intern- ships, Symposium on Congestive Heart Failure, Pre- marital Consultation, Symposium on the Biological Effects of Irradiation, Locating a Practice fa film stripb, Symposium on Insurance, Symposium on State Medical Institutions, and the Moot Court. In addition, noteworthy in its activity this year, SAMA, in conjunction with the administration, has created SAAC, the Student Affairs Advisory Committee. Composed of faculty and student representatives, the committee meets monthly to discussany affairs pertinent to the relationship between students and administration. HISTUHU of the Class of 1958 How far away seems that sunny afternoon in late August when sixtyeseven excited and unknowing girls sat on a lawn at Tanglewood and realized, even then, that the next three years would not be the same kind of picnic! With a wagon load of various texts iwhose authors, dates, and titles must be remem- beredb and hours of endless instruction fcalled orientationj, we began a trip through time, the years being punctuated with tears, joys, mistakes, disappointments, and a measure of ma- turity. Long and tiring were the hours of study, the endless lectures, the trials and errors of nursing arts lab, but just when we needed a boost there came the reward for our effort: that priceless first experience on the wards. The days passed quickly that first year, and almost before we could imagine, we were K 4 . 8 . given a halo for our tasks-a tiny, starched, white cap. How beautiful the memory of capping! We'll never know what happened to the next few months-crowded with making formu- la, threading suture, seeing the miracle of a birth, praying with a mother beside a sick child, and studying human behavior at Dix Hill. Yet, somewhere in all those months we'd had time for beach trips, fraternity parties, engagements, weddings, and even babies. But suddenly we looked around and found ourselves at the end of a course of learning. Just ahead lay graduation-the commencement of duty and purpose. Then in the inner sources of our minds familiar words began to take meaning: I solemnly pledge myself before God- and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. 1.3 Q? .. . , 4. .s . ,. 5 . ,.., .,.-sera.
