I- .. u U ll l It is with pride that we. the class of 1956. dedicate our annual to one whose wisdom and labors. in great part. have made possible this fine medical school from which we now graduate. XVe appreciate the difficulties ena countered in the transition ol a two-year school of medical sciences to a full four-year school of medicine. He worked untiringly for this, and it was successfully achieved with the opening of our school. His ability as a physician and as an edu- cator is recognizedfeven in foreign countries. XVe have joked about his pleasure trip to Egypt. but. we also have been extremely proud of his achievements there, Despite his numerous activities. he has per- formed well those duties which have been of primary concern to us. As eager but anxious freshmen. we met him first during orientation. He quickly put us at ease, assur- IO TS' ed us that we had an excellent chance of graduating. and clearly outlined what was expected of us. His informal. personal ap- proach left us feeling that we had someone who would stick by us. VVe realize now that this feeling was not mistaken. He has been flexible. liberal, and considerate of our edu- cational problems. XVithout loss of dignity, he has joined us in fun. has borne the brunt of some of our horse- play. and has proven that he. too, can be quick with a good joke. XVe have been happy at Bowman Cray. and we have learned good medicine. We feel that, in large measure. he is responsible. He does not demand or ask for respect and honor. but he deserves ours. Thus, we gratefully dedicate our annual to our dean. Dr. Coy C. Carpenter. .--F ' f -M Wi .lx X .: .ATR .RXNA H., Coy C. Carpenter, M. D H' 2 Ii.a1m1,1m NYE Tummy, PILID.. D.D. Cm' C. CIAnmcN1Ex1. N. x y ' 1 ' ' Three Year Performance Living day by day, and having life's young carefree feeling, one knows not where the foot- steps of time shall guide his path, neither tomorrow nor the following tomorrows. As the door opens from one phase of life to another, we. too, move forward with maturity and knowledge. This has been the most outstanding phase of our lives and we, as seniors, now repeat it to you. In the fall of nineteen-luindred and fifty-three, seventy young, carefree, wideeeyed girls, full of curiosity and with a desire to help the sick. entered the N. C. Baptist Hospital School of Nurs- ing. Having been orientated to the great Halls of Healingu, we immediately familiarized our- selves with closed study. To some of us this was time set aside to play bridge, knit and write letters, but we were soon to pay by burning midnight oil-cramming for nursing arts, chemistry, anatomy and many others. XVith Christmas around the corner, we looked forward to one week of vacation and one week of ward work without having to rush to class. Books, studies, and classes were put away with lock and key. Though still new in the profession we tried to act like dignified seniors. Then came the notorious expression- God grant me patience, strength, and understanding. During the early months of 195-1 everyone was happy to know we had a new Ptomaine Tavern. Our new cafeteria opened and was welcomed1 because the three symptoms-nausea, vomiting and diarrhea had taken their toll. Anxiously. we waited for Hay and our reward. which was to come in the form of a white cap. Finally. the day arrived-Nlay ZS, 195-1. XVe assembled on the front steps at Ardmore Baptist Church and there anticipated the excitement and joy within, which comes with newly capped student nurses. Parents filled the church with smiling, proud faces. After the capping a recep- tion followed in the cafeteria where we were the celebrities. At last, though only freshmen, we worked the full eight hour day, excluding classes. NVhat a wonderful feelingl As summer progressed, we flocked to the shuffleboard beach-popular to nurses and exposed to one-half the hospital. Incidentally, the patients enjoyed the view as well as we enjoyed the beach. Yacation time rolled around and we again departed to all points on the globe. Two weeks were the limit. but how did a certain four girls rate two months? XVonder if that was thoroughly investigated? Again assembling for classes in the fall we found there were diamonds floating around. Xlallie began the parade of marriages that was soon to follow. Now, as juniors, we experienced many happenings. VVe began specialties-operating room, pediatrics. and obstetrics. Alice Miller was elected secretary of the State Student Nurses Association. Unusual happenings occurred on the wards. Moe found she couldnt dissolve Deinerol tablets, june picked an area of skin un- wisely and Bobbie and Peggy learned to manipulate a foster frame with their eyes closed. Yes. it was a wonderful year, but it was not all work. XVe began thinking about the junior- Senior. This thought brought with it the need for money. NVe planned a square dance which everyone enjoyed. In the early spring. we put much planning into a talent show where the1'e was student participation. Dr. Prince was NLC. and did a great job. Finally. on May seventh we presented the junior-Senior to the senior class. Incidentally, -Ioan, you did a fine job plan- ning the dance. XVe were proud to be able to have a banquet preceding the dance. Again time held the upper hand. During the summer months more marriages took place and vacations were enjoyed to the fullest. XVe knew that in the early fall we would receive an ad- dition to our caps in the form of a small black band. At our black band supper we couldn't have been happier. This point in our careers signified that we could see our goal just over the horie zon. Also, we found Xliss Bettie Baise was to return to our school after an absence of one year. Some people wondered why we were all smiles. Then each, in turn, began our psychiatric affiliation at Dix Hill. Tales from upperclassmen had, of course. reached us. An anticipation of what was to come enthralled each of us. Those days shall never be forgotten but remembered with a smile. In the months that were to follow we realized the responsibility that was to be placed on us. Then, we acknowledged the position we were about to fill. Yes, maturity had been reached. Seriousness replaced a carefree manner. XVhat will happen tomorrow and in the following tomorrows is still a mystery. Some of us will go on with studying to attain another goal-others will be satisfied with the present. There is no greater satisfaction than knowing we can help others. For this we shall always be proud. 84 sg-1: ' ff Rvgistralion Pltnif Cappintl -Specialties Jumor-Senior Blurb Band Supper The Hill Profl-sszonal Adjustmvnls 1. ' -t ' r .!'
