North Carolina. as a four-year medical college. When the school was expanded to a four-year institution, it was renamed The Bowman Gray School of Medi- cine of Wake Forest College. in recognition of the benefactor who made the expansion pos- sible, the late Bowman Gray, of NVinston- Salem. Although presently separated from the parent institution, the dean in his administrative ca- pacity is responsible to the President of Wake Forest College and, through him. to the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest College. The North Carolina Baptist Hospital, the main teaching hospital of the medical school since 19-ll, was founded in 1923. The activities of the two institutions, both operated under the Baptist State convention of North Carolina, are integrated and correlated in the best interests of medical education and medical care, . 4. .,.,......,.,, , . The next week. 5-l of us went to class hoping that this was not the shape of things to come. The following week we received our hrst threat from the Physiology department-Howard XVavne. Undaunted. Snvder bought his second copy of Grav lthe other worn threadbarel. Bowling said goodby to his nerves and eyeballs, XVeathers finally identified the Posas Major. and we all somehow lived through the lXlagor's Anatomical Drills . XVas there ever a better Christmas? Then came Cl new quarter. with Biochemistry posing the still unanswered question: 'XVhy he die? and Folger coating his red blood cells with copper to keep the iron from rusting them. In neuroanaromv they passed out the brains. and we are all somehow suspicious that Shelton keep his. Scholastic averages and beer sales soared and the only failure occurred when Funderburk flunked his rab- bit test, Jim Barnes had. by then. challenged the majority of the Ardmore population and Sargent was gradually mov- ing his effects to the nurses' home. The next quarter. two people had an experience from which neither con- cerned will ever fully recover. Dr. Beamer met Basil Boyd. And for all of us began the longest course in academic circles to the rollicking laughter of Happy Harold . Here we discovered to our surprise that Ike Holleman could answer questions in his sleep and that C, Nash Keck did not discover muscle spasm. Germ warfare came into full flower as bacteriology did un- natural things to our little group. Even with instruction from Ledbctter on the use of arrows. Did everybody en- joy their vacation on the Great Lakes? Fresh from beaches and honeymoons. we came back in the fall of '50. counted noses, decided it couldn't happen to us, and pressed on. Everyone tried to make our stay a happy one . . . even to lecturing with their hats on. The Moose assured us that the mind could ab- sorb only what the seat can endure. and for six months Dr Cireen tried to prove him wrong Sadly we realtled that Dorothy would never be the same altet ltyttlg to take a Seopacon home with her each night lllivstologv and pharmacology came to an end with Dr littles screams ringing in our ears. as they again applied the thumbscrews to him for giving concise. informative. well-outlined lectures. ', . found half the class home while the others stayed and waited for New Year's to go home. The Student Government gave a Christmas party for those wi.o were not so fortunate to be home. Caroling to the patients was enjoyed not only by them but by those working as well. New Years Eve brought a gay night to quite a few, and where was Baxley? Dismal days followed as mid-terms hit us in the face and we burned midnight oil and crammed for exams. And so with the help and guidance of our faithful instructors we all passed. The spring fever must have overtaken a few of our class as some of the girls decided to change careers from nursing to housewives. With many hours of class work, instructions and demonstrations. we were next spending our weak- ends working eight hours a day. What a change for usf May the thirtieth brought a happy and unfor- gettable day to the entire class, We had made the grade and now the award. The White Cap-P.C. days were over for us. We began working all day like other nurses. also we learned to distinguish med- ical students from doctors. Out came the tennis rackets, card games, swim- ming, sun bathing. picnics and wiener roasts at Miller Park, and other parties for those here as well as the vacationers. This summer found many of us experiencing ourselves in the operating room. diet kitchen, and on night duty for the first time, Then the time came for the girls living at the courts to move to the nurses home and if you saw what looked like a bunch of hobos walking up and down in front of the hospital, it was just us and our belongings. The summer soon passed and as September grew near a new class of preclinicals arrived. To give the brighter side of nursing life. the class put on a min- strel show with Nancy Brown hitting the spotlight and gave them a glad welcome to our choice of living. Miss Shore was soon teaching us the bare essen- tials that the stork knew and the fall quickly passed with more classes and working night and day. Money became the pass word and people began by-passing us as we sold things from hot dogs to magazines to make money for our Junior-Senior. Halloween found us working like little eager beavers to make the carnival a success. Gloria Webb reigned as gypsy queen as we watched many of our fellow co-workers performing their talents. Thanksgiving came and went with most of us working. Christmas saw a few of the lucky ones go home. The new year brought many exciting events: valentine parties, elec- tion of class officers, and Sarah Doub's birthday. so she says. Tutterow left us unexpectedly to be- come Mrs. Redman. Success is really hers as she has a little Redman now. O.R, call who had to go ish a penny out of a little tot's throat? Summer soon came and many were now off on three weeks vacation, while the rest of us stayed on the wards to work and wait for our three weeks. There were excursions over to High Point Lake. Joy and Juanita with their tennis rackets were often seen out on the courts at sunrise, while Bob and Tha went out at sunset. We were real proud that Sarah Doub was selected to attend the Annual Nurses Meeting at Atlantic City with Miss Warren. At the close of the summer we saw another class graduate and we were getting excited over receiving our black bands and being the senior class. Miss Harrison. former Director of Nursing Education and a faith- ful and devoted instructor was leaving the school to go home for a rest. And so our last year began and the second group of our girls left for the Hill , The experiences at the Hill' are some that will never be forgotten. There is also the business and social angles which must be considered in deciding whether or not one likes it. Psychiatry is really interesting, huh, girls? With the onset of having married students remain in the school. Gloria Parks became Mrs. Harris and is still with us. Dot Ann Johnson became the bride of George Winecoff. Congratulations to you both. Spending our last Christmas here as students, the weeks and months began passing quickly. After spending the last few months on our specialties, Miss Boone tried to cram in our thick skulls how a pro- fessional nurse should conduct herself. With this. we actually pulled through our last year. Despite our differences and our characters , we have lived and felt closer to this group which we called our class than any group we know: sharing happy and sad occasions. As we look a wee bit into the future, we see a few couples who may become happily hitched-Tha and Bob, Jeanette and Tilton, Prandy and Earl. Rachel and Cecil, Woody and Robert, Cynthia and Allen. Speedy and Archie, Pat and Clyde, Propst and Lindsey, Beverly and Dan. Gloria and Donald, and if things work out like we hope they will, may- be Sarah and Charlie will make the grade. If there is anyone left out in this paragraph who has plans for the future, it's because we don't know about it. As the rest of us try to seek new and brighter nelds in the profession. many of us are going on to school for extended courses in nursing. Until our class meets again. we break the ties that bind our love and fellowship, and leave the late date parties , walks to the foot, and the Hlling of the campus with our devilishment to the next class and those who follow. BESSIE BEAMER 104 . LEST WE PART As seniors, we soon hope to be graduates. We soon will be leaving our hospital and nursing school-those phases of learning through which we have passed are now to be learned by those of you who follow in our footsteps. Gur training has been hard and trying and from our experiences we have found that nursing is not a bed of roses. We leave behind our good times and carry with us their memories. not speaking for our more trying times. lest We never forget them. We are not sorry that we chose nursing as a profession as it has helped our growth in maturity and has increased our knowledge and experience. and given us many opportunities to help the sick, injured. and handicapped. To our parents and guardians whom we credit for our being here: to the hospital nursing staff and administrators: to our instructors who have tried so hard in helping us to become good nurses-and we hope you are not dis- appointed with us-we have many thanks to you all. Last on our list but first in our hearts, we thank our Heavenly Father that we are well and able to carry out our responsibilities and duties as pro- fessional nurses and administer to those in need. -THE EDITOR 1 105 .H 'fitljiie . .... 1 'P l RW i,.
