BOOK I NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-TWO My BOWMAN GRAY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WAKE FOREST COLLEGE WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA Y I tr 'rests' , A y PREFACE On the following pages are some of the ingredients of memories stored during a school year at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest College, Remote from the clashings of a hectic world-the furor of Washington scandals, riots in Egypt, Vishinsky vituperations, and Korean battle cries-the medical school has seen another customarily quiet year. Yet it has been an eventful one, The year marked the beginning of a second decade of service to the sick by the Bowman Gray School of Medicine and the affiliated Baptist Hospital, The summer of l95l saw the formal beginning of construction of a l5O-bed addition to the present hospital plant. ln the fall President Truman flew down from Washington to take part in the official groundbreak- ing ceremony for Greater Wake Forest College held on the campus site at Reynolda. ln October a great loss to this institution and its students was incurred by the death of Dr, Vann. Then too, the year will be remembered for many routine chores and pleasures that filled it . . . Possessing many talents and an unusual liacultv for combining industry and relaxation. Dr. Mc- Millan does not ever have to be a XValter Nitty to derive pleasure and satisfaction from living. As Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine in the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. he is widely recognized as a top-flight internist and cardiologist. In this capacity, he packs in a full schedule between his olfice in the Private Diagnostic Clinic, lectures in the medical school, EKG readings in the Heart Station. daily ward rounds, staff meetings. medical conventions, and clinical research. He is certilied by the American Board of Internal Medicine and also by its Sub-specialty Board on Cardiovascular Disease: he is a member of Alpha Omega .-Xlpha, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and belongs to the American Medical Association and numerous other medical societies. At home he and Mrs. McMillan are kept busy with Sara, age 12, Robert Lindsay, lr., age 9, and Mary Graham. age -l. And then not only is he an authority on Hmvci gardening the specializes in camellias and .iyaleasl but also he can describe III detail the technique ol surlicasting for red drum and the lashing prospects in numerous lake and river retreats haunted by the black bass. Having cultivated an etlortless balance between vocation and axocation. Dr. Nlcalillan is a master ol the art ol: gracious living. In the hubbub ol' medical school lite where spastic is prone to become a standard byword among medical students. even casual contacts with Doctor Hob provide .1 refreshing relic-li lirom any sense of strain. It is xi ith utmost pleasure that the Senior Class of the Bowman Gray School of isledicine ileilicates this yearbook to Dr. Robert Mcalillan. vnu: 13 n Jn Mem Dr. Herbert Moffett Vann 1893 1951 Dr. Vann, professor of anatomy in the llowman Gray School of Medicine and beloved friend of the medical students who had known him. died Sunday afternoon, October 1-1. 19:11. at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital following a week of ill- ness caused by coronary occlusion. Dr. Vann was born in Danville. Virginia, on February 8. 1893. He attended Mars Hill and XVake Forest College, receiving his 15.5, from V1'ake Forest in 1915 and his M.A. in 1910. He attended Ielferson Medical College and received his BLD. there in 1917. Following overseas service in World VVar 1 as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. he returned to VVake Forest College and served as Professor of Anatomy in its medical school from 1919 to 1951, except for two years as assistant professor of anatomy at Tulane Medical School. 1926-1928. ln addition. he organized the medical detachment of the 115th Field Artillery of the North Carolina National Guard and served as maior in charge until 19-111. Surviving him are his wife, the former Miss Mildred Arzani of Ansonia. Pennsylvaniag his son. Dr. Robert 1.. Vann. assist- ant resident in pediatrics at the North Carolina Baptist Hospitalg his daughter, Mrs. Iames 1. VValler of VVinston-Salem: his sister, Mrs. 1Villiam D. livin of Salzburg. Austria: and his two broth- ers. Rev. Luther R. Vann of Roanoke. Virginia. and Capt. lohn W. Vann. MC. USN, of Coro- nado. California. The impact of this great man's life and spirit could perhaps best be appreciated by a glimpse at the sum total of the memories of him cherished by all of us, his medical students. To the students during his teaching lifetime. Dr. Yann and his course in human anatomy were practically the embodiment of the medical school of VVake Forest College. As early as premedical days. bull sessions about medical school in smoky fraternity rooms. at Sun- day School luncheons. and in crowded cafes sooner or later centered on Dr. Vann. VVhenever a dele- gation would come from the medical school to interview prospective students in undergraduate school, Dr. Vann would be the hrst person to bc singled out. The concensus, in any case. was that although with stern pedagogy he required thor- ough mastery of the 131111-odtl pages of Ciray's Anatomy. he knew more about entering medical students than anyone else in school and was actu- ally their closest friend. No consideration of Dr. Vann would be com- plete without watching him survey one by one a class of freshman medical students as they would take their places in the anatomy dissecting room. dressed in their starchy, untarnished lab coats and armed with their fresh crackling editions of Gray's Anatomy. Dr. Vann expected and received a great deal from his medical students. He expected them to be in their places and ready for work at 3311 AM: he expected them to work diligently at all times and set a high mark for themselves. He con- tinually stressed their privilege in being in medical school: and he treated them with dignity and ex- pected from them a mature. sincere conduct. Through the years we will recall many familiar scenes with Dr. Yann. VVe will recall not only somewhat terrifying moments in quiz sessions. but also his cheery greetings from his ollice as we passed by in the hallway, his occasional beckon- ings to see a gorgeous autumn scene from his win- dow. and his enthusiasm before a Vllake Forest Homecoming football game. But most of all. we will remember that Dr. Vann not only knew the full name of everyone of us who studied under him but also knew our every eccentricity and cap- ability and was our confidant and counselor in many problems. VVhenever in the future we may be tempted to make shabby compromises with our professional and personal integrity. we will be prompted by the memory of The Maioru always upholding standards of discipline and duty. C.xRPhNTLR, M.D. Dean Bowman Gray School of Medicine Professor of Pathology ADMINISTRATION The Bowman Gray School of Medicine is the medical school of Vlhike Forest College and an expansion of the two-year school at NVnlte Forest founded in WUI. The name was changed by action of the Board of Trustees in recognition of the benefuction of the late Bowman Gray, Sr.. who left provision of funds in his will which were awarded to XVg1ke Forest College. making the establishment of the four-year medictil school pos- sible. Although presently separated from the p.trent institution. the dean in his administrative capacity is responsible to the President of XVake Forest College and. through him. to the Board of Trus- tees of VVake Forest College. The North Carolina Baptist Hospital. the main teaching hospital of the medical school since IQ-ll, was founded in l923. But it wasn't long before we found him to be not only a rea11y swell guy but also our staunchest spokesman for more freedom in medical education. Then too. in the spring quarter there was Dr. Dot Tuttle. With disarming patience and kind- ness she skilfully guided us through bacteria. fungi. rickettsiae, and virtises in a fashion that left tis noth- ing to gripe about at the Steak House on Saturday nights. The following year found each of tis a little more assured and loaded with gags for scaring the fresh- men but still nohody's doctor by a long shot. At this time we were introduced to Dr. Parker Beamer. Oflicial ceremonies were held on 14 October 1949 at 10:00 AM when every last one of us tincluding Dr. Groat, T., and Bessie Kay, mind youj broke out a cigar during one of Dr. Beamer's lectures and filled Room 224 with an aroma that must have staggered even him a little bit. During the winter quarter we put on the big push and wrapped up our physiology theses as well as the grueling hours with pathology. pharmaco1ogy, and physiology lectures and labs. Then we started to think about who to buy our uniforms from for the next year on the wards and what kind of diagnostic equipment to get. Naturally. Cobel wanted us to buv everything through him-and Charlie Nledlin wanted us to buy through him. YVe ended up about half and half, greeted newlarrival loyce Reynolds. and sailed into Dr. Cayer's physical diagnosis and Dr. HutaFf's hematology. VVe will long remember Dr. Cayers reading of Vo1taire's Zudfg and its impression on tis. Drs. Starling and Myers steered us in surgery, During the spring quarter we also found an unexpected amount of free time-and used it fully. There were soft ball games out at Miller Park. tennis tournaments, various parties. slight boning for the State Boards. and not as mtlch general study as we had counted on. But it felt good after the winter quarter. Then came the long-awaited iourney tip on the wards and new arrivals from Ole Miss-Duncan and Mayfield. Carolina-Hardison. and North Dakota- Erbele. Humphrey, Leigh. Miller. Ruland. and Tar- nasky. Any illusions we may have entertained about our really being Doctors were quickly dispelled by our first few frenetic weeks on the floors. Nothing seemed to work otit right. Charlie hledlin will tell von how much trouble he had trying to convince Bob lluncan that blood asphalts were done only on Sunday. Final- ly. we got fairly well acclimated to the new environs. however. and we were able to start Huids after only three or four tries. catch our pages without willing on the spot. and do .i historv withooi role-rrititg to the forms. Dr. 1.ock even called on Sicrintv for a comment in CPC one night and Dr. Cayer cited the brilliant laboratory work done iw iii cc Bob A. Murgatroyd had convinced tis that he could do the Charleston better than anyone else around here. Boettner was occasionally popping a lung cyst or two. and Cobel had to take intravenous ACTH for an urticarial condition in which allergy to money was definitely ruled out. The end of the iunior year found us variously placed. Many worked over at City. George Barrett-prominent Bowman Gray physiologist-was over at Forsyth County Clinic. Eisenberg was considering hormonal aspects of the ladies around here for a research proiect with Dr. lerry Aikawa. Bessie Kay was over at Martinsville, and others of tis goofed off-much to the dismay of Fireman lack Fe1ts. Finally. the senior year had rolled around and we wondered if we really knew anything at all. Bitt1er knew something. He assured Dr. Cayer up in 1Xledica1 UPU that the function of the kidneys is to make urine. Pediatric rounds pretty well undermined what little clinical .olzfofr fclliff' we had developed: but it was worth it for the top-notch teaching we got plus side- lines on lunior's mommy, fried tinicorn horn. and the I5-lined ground squirrel. Over in Obbfiyn Show- mer made a big hit with Dr. Adams, Dr. Burt de- scribed the technique on Brownie points. and a thumb belonging to a -tth year clinical clerk showed up in pathology along with a uterus and a set of adnexae, Then came the furor about internships. the match- ing plan. etc., ad znizfxmliz during which time opinions were a dime a dozen but nobody knew just what was going on. Finally, most of us had ioined the Plan and in spite of pro's and con's about deals we end- ed up with a fairly interesting array of internships. including 1-l appointments to City. VVel1. there you have some of it. lt's not the whole story by a long shot. PUBLICATIONS BOARD Clmirmzm Faculty .1dzf1'5e1'x The Publications Board, which was created this year. is designed to promote maximum ekhciency in the production of the lournal of the Bowman Gray School of Illfdliflillt' and of the yearbook GRAY AND WHITE MATTER. and to co- ordinate student management with the school administration in regard to matters of hnance and general policy. The members of the Board are Nick Sacrinty Dr. C. Nash Herndon Dr. I. Maxwell Little composed of a chairman, arbitrarily the Vice-Presi- dent of the Student Body, faculty advisers, and the editors and business managers of the two publica- tions respectively. The members outlined early in the year a set of regulations in regard to the struc- ture and function of the Board which was ap- proved by the Student Body and incorporated into its Constitution. C. Baptist Hospital took on a tremendous task-that of making pro- fessional nurses of us Fifty-three starry-eyed, un- knowing and unsuspecting maidens who set up living quarters on their premises that rainy VVed- nesday of August Sl. 1949. Unly very shortly after our arrival did the proper authorities begin exhibit- ing their authority. With our first lessons on How to Studyu land a plentious assortment of material to practice onj we responded by putting away our tennis rackets, date dresses, et cetera until later when we could possibly and purposefully give out of studying material. Those were the days when Kats last words became famous: XVhere Iii that man thats gonna marry me and take me away from all this? It wasn't easy-that preclinical period-but even with Heckys escapades with the obstetrician's son. and Alice's constant shift of admirers and some- times ''steadiesh-predominantly Iunior med. stu- dents-we made the grade. Participation in cap- ping exercises at Ardmore Baptist Church on Februa ary 28, 1950 was sufficient verification that our behavior and ward work had not been too un- acceptable. As a result we convinced ourselves that the more you learn, the more you forgetl so why study? Uut came the canasta cards. tennis rackets, and briefies for sunbathing. Toots got a beautiful tan. With summer came those long awaited vaca- tions and our first stab at night duty, associated from the beginning with Leonards midnight pranks. September l saw us as Iuniors with Mari- lyn succeeding Helen Elrod as class president. The battle of OB. and O.R. was on. Sterile technique and scrubbing became routine. and soon thread- ing sutures and having babies was old stuff to us. VVe had won, only to become engaged in another battle: sponsoring a Iunior-Senior Prom. All our creative efforts and industrious energies were more than rewarded as we found our way on the eve- ning of May I9 to the ballroom of the Robert E. Lee Hotel. with Iimmy Myers' Orchestra dishing out a musical mixture that made the evening un- forgettable. Kats flight to Boston as a delegate to the N.L.N.E. convention from the State Student Nurses Association was another May event. A glorious three weeks' vacation rolled 'round for each of us with the termination of classes. Dreams were fulfilled at beach parties and on mountain retreats: Irene. Marilyn, Dolly, and Elaine can vouch for both. Faye maneuvered her vacation to coincide with Bert's furlough. and Dot became hospitalized in Morganton. It was an ap- pendectom y I Not being too reluctant for vacations to end was due to the fact that black bands were waiting to make Lis Seniors. Our three months at The Hill proved that psychiatry has its place. VVe're iust glad they picked the place they did! Dolly liked it well enough to leave us and marry Strick. Frankie, Nan, and Littleton convinced us they should have gone before they did! To them Raleigh was even more interesting than our new T.V.lll Student body meetings persisted. Proctors sprang up as we became oriented to the call-down billg new social privileges were effected. However, we were totally unsuccessful in our struggle for blanket permissions, and. oh. yes, with the Bendix, tool Professional adjustments classes began with Miss Harrison bringing an inseparable friend-her crutch. VVe attended sessions of the State Nurses Associ- ation in Greensboro and visited the local Red Cross Chapter House. Various phases of Nursing was investigated chiefly through personal interviews. Charge duty demanded our application on the wards of manv things we learned in this course. Temptations. such as the kind found on the left hand third Finger, successfully trapped some of the class. Forty-one remained. but it was difficult for us and those who saw us through-we mean Lois and Harry . . . Marty and Dub . . . Laura Ann and Dale . . . Pat and Marvin . . . Kep and Charlie. Even though Elaine, Iane, and Irene ftransfers from Longs'j will don that white before the rest of us, they couldn't be more eager for graduation and their diplomas. Iust ask Lulu . . . We'll hear Tommye sigh and 'Poss' will grin . . The purposes of the C.S.U. are to unify, assist, and promote various religious ac- tivities in the school. to lead every student to par- ticipate in a local church program. and to seek to incorporate in her lite those Christlike qualities that are becoming to a Christian nurse. .-Xt the beginning of the school year. the C.S.U. began its program of welcoming the preclinicals by arranging for them to visit various churches. and having a slumber party in their honor. VVhen the new class of medical students arrived in October, the C.S.L'. sponsored a play-day and picnic for the two new classes at the student cabin. Thoughout the year, the C.S.U. has sponsored a regularly scheduled program of activities in the nursing school and hospital. Among them are Mon- day and Thursday night vespers for both the patients and students. pediatric Sunday School and story hour. morning and evening watch. special mission programs. and workshops. In Ianuary. the C.S.U.. along with a steering committee trom the medical school, mapped out plans for the First Religious Emphasis VVeek among students. Dr. T. Z. Koo. leader of VVorld Student Christian groups. led forums and discussions on the theme The Christian Dynamic in My Profes- SIOH. Besides activities in the hospital and nursing school. the C.S.U. sponsored trips such as visiting the Mills Home with Christmas presents for each child. taking Christmas treats to a Negro school. holding worship services at the Baptist Home and County Home. and arranging visits to VVoman'S College Baptist Student Center in Greensboro.
