Many of us knew him, or of him, back in the Good old lprewarl days on the campus of Wake Forest College. Previous acquaintances are unnecessary, however, for a man who is a bona fide friend of any student in the field of medicine. ln dedicating the l95O Yearbook to Dr. Robert P. Morehead it is in remembrance of his untiring effort to teach us a few of the fundamental principles of disease processes, and his philosophy of the impor- tance of having certain fundamental knowledge at the fingertips. Being a master of his own philosophy has been an inspiration to each of us. THANKS, MO0SE 5 W N, DR. ROBERT P, MOREHEAD iss... Accompanying this aggregation of embryonic medicos to Winston-Salem were sixteen wives and fifteen offspring. Some members of the class came directly from college. Some were detoured by way of most any meridian of the globe. There were fighter pilots, waist gunners, hospital corpsmen, infan- trymen, a Tin can skipper, and a submarine officer. There was one who had been a prisioner of the Germans in Norway, another who was shot through the shoulder in crossing the Elbe, Other Posts were just as interesting, but after the first session under The Major in 404 thoughts of the past were soon replaced with those of the task at hand. During the last four years our minds have been pondering about many things, but the question uppermost in our cerebro has been, What is going to happen next? We were the first class to take Bac-T the freshman year, the first class to have our pathology and physiology correlated, the first class to enjoy the quarter system, and last, but not least, the first class to have the privilege of taking twenty-four wives and thirty-five children to a graduation at Wake Forest College campus. lf there are any more Firsts to be done, just stand by and watch-we'll do 'em. 44 I ...Y The Tysons as of October first. FOOTBALL Tag football is a pretty strenuous endeavor for men who do not have time for daily workouts, but for some reason there were always enough present at game time, during this H9491 season, to put a full team on the field. The season was not too successful, on a basis of wins and losses, but at least a good time was had by all. Many more participated during the season than are shown in the above picture, This just hap- pened to be the group that played the day the Football team had its picture made. This non- profit periodical is distributed to the student body, faculty and alumni ofthe school, to all medical libraries in the United States, and to eight foreign countries. For assistance in preparation of the l949-50 numbers we are indebted to the students for preparation of the material, to the faculty for selecting the most suitable papers for publication, and to Mabe, Cochran, lchelson, Folk, McLean, and Johnson, for their assistance in proofing the many articles which have appeared during the last year. F fr HISTORY OF THE NURSING SCHOOL Mighty oaks from little acorns grow may describe the growth that has taken place in the School of Nursing of the N. C, Baptist Hospital. ln September l923, fifteen students became the first class to begin training here, The school was opened under the direction of Miss Edna L. Heinzerling who still so capably directs the school and in September I949 welcomed a class of fifty-three students, more than three times the size of the first class. Ten of the fifteen from the first class completed the required training and were graduated in the first commencement exercises, held Moy 25, l926, at the First Baptist Church. Each graduate was presented with a class pin and S25 and Mrs. J. J. Roddick, a member of the Board of Trustees, gave each girl her invitations. Judge A. Wayland Cooke, Secretary of the Hospital Board from Greensboro, N. C. was speaker for the occasion. The first graduate of the school was Miss Bryte Harrill fnow Mrs. Felix Wilsonl from the Mills Home, Thomasville, N. C. who completed her training July 4, l926. Mrs. Wilson now lives an Meadowbrook Drive, Winston-Salem, N. C. ln the same month as the first graduating exercises, the Board authorized the building of a Nurses' Horne. Before this, the students stayed in what is now Myrtle Apartments and also on the fifth floor of the hospital. The Nurses' Home building was dedicated on March 29, l928, having been named in honor of Miss Blanche Barrus. Miss Barrus was born in Pollocksville, N. C. She entered Meredith College, Raleigh, N, C. in T906 and was graduated in l9l0. Her classmates tell of her unselfish, sacrificial spirit and her constant concern for others. For several years after her graduation, Miss Barrus served as executive secretary of the state Woman's Missionary Union, lContinued on Page 957 84 4 - J 1 Senior Class Officers Nancy York President Mildred Lindsey Vice-President Phyllis Gates Secretary and Treasurer Jeanne Hallowell Representative SENIORS 1949 Kathleen Atkins Mount Airy, N. As the student of today groans beneath her load of eight-hour duty twhich includes her class hoursi, she may feel more fortunate when she thinks of the student of yesterday who had ten-hour duty on the wards plus classes at night-with no class hours oft and never more than half a day off during the week. She also may be grateful for the educational director, the graduates who serve as instructors, the doctors, the hospital chaplain, dietitians and other specialists-all of whom work together to give her a well-rounded and practical education. These persons make possible many advantages that the student nurse of l923 did not have, as she had to depend on one graduate nurse and a few private practitioners for her instruction. The psychiatric affiliation begun in May i948 with the State Hospital in Raleigh, N. C. gives to the student of today a broader nursing knowledge. Also, in those days, classes were held in the basement of the hospital, while the student of i949 meets her classes in wells arranged classrooms and laboratories that provide facilities and equipment for learning and practice before a real patient is encountered. The school uniform has changed little since the beginning of the school. The colors have always been blue and white. The student of l923 was considered well-groomed in a longfsleeved blue uniform with white apron, bib, collar and cuffs, and not last or least- black shoes and stockings! In about two years, the long sleeves were changed to short ones and the black shoes and stockings became a lovely white-to the joy of all! The uniform later was mode in one piece. The cap has been the same since the beginning of the school. Simple in style and line, it is an exact copy of the cap of Miss Heinzerling, the only difference in the caps being the way they are folded. The school pin, simple in design and beautiful in colors of black and gold, was designed by Miss Heinzerling and members of the first class. The school did not make its rapid growth and improvement of its own accord, and to Miss Edna L. Heinzerling, its first and present director, and her staff of graduate nurses, can be attributed much of its growth and success. Miss Heinzerling, a graduate of the Whitehead- Stokes Private Sanatoriurn lnow Rowan Memorial Hospitall in Salisbury, N. C. has served as director of the school its entire life except for two brief periods. Under her direction, the school has grown not only in number but in usefulness and its graduates, now totaling 4lO K3 are deceasecll are serving today throughout the world. Recent graduates and students have also contributed to the school in various ways. The School pennant, in colors of blue and white, was designed by Miss Jeanne l-lollowell, a graduate of the class of I949, To members of the class of March l948 goes credit for the school paper, The Placebo, Miss Bettie Boise being the first editor. The Student-Faculty Cooperative Government was organized in l944. Religious activities in the school are directed by a student secretary and the Christian Student Union. To several members of the class of i946 and Mrs. Daphne Penny Stanton lthen student secretary? the school is indebted for the school song which expresses well the feeling of loyalty and pride felt by each student. And so the school has grown-in number, in ideals, in spirit-but always with the one purpose of bringing physical and mental health through the beautiful art of nursing which Florence Nightingale called the finest of the fine arts. 122 an 'J-ff..
