jevficvzffcm HERBERT MOFFIT VANN, MD. The dedication of an annual is often a dilhcult taskg how- ever, it posed no problem for the members of the Class of 1947. lt was their unanimous decision that their friend and counsellor, Dr, Herbert M. Vann, be chosen. His fatherly advice and reassurance during many a difhcult period has endeared him to the students. He was born in Danville, Virginia, the son of a physician. He received his medical education from Wfake Forest College and jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1917. Then, after interning at the Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn. he entered the army as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps and spent some time in France during the first World War. In 1919 he became Professor of Anatomy in this medical school. Except for one short period of absence on leave, he has held this position for the past 27 years. In 1924 he organized a medical unit of the National Guard, serving as Regimental Surgeon to the 115th Field Artillery, with the rank of Major, until 1959. Dr. Vann fills an important office at Bowman Gray as Director of Admissions and Registrar. To him belongs much of the credit for the organization and success of the school. As a teacher one of his outstanding characteristics has been his flexibility of mind. In the training of medical students he deserves credit for the development of an important fundamen- tal principle, the ability to observe accurately and comprehen- sively. It is with the greatest pleasure that the student body and the Class of 1947 dedicate this issue of the GRAY MATTER to the Major, LEONARD CACCAMO 18
