THE OUT PFITIEHT DEPHRTHTEITT The purpose of the Out Patient Department is to provide competent medical examination and treatment on the specialist level for those patients who are unable to afford standard fees, and to admit them to the hospital if they need hospitalization. If they do not need to enter the hospital, proper treatment is recommended to them and to their local doctors. The depart- mental deficit incurred as the result of this arrangement is supported by the Mothers' Day offering of the North Carolina Baptist Churches. The clinics are operated by fourth year medical students and the house staff under the supervision of senior consultants. In order to provide both first class medical care for the patients as well as maximum teaching facilities for the students, the number of patients admitted is geared to the demands of the student body. io X
