LUCILLE HARTMAN, Pedhzfmf Nzme. 9 R -M THE OUT PFITIEHT DEPHRTHTEITT The purpose of the Out Patient Department is to provide competent medical examination and treatment on the specialist level for those patients who are unable to afford standard fees, and to admit them to the hospital if they need hospitalization. If they do not need to enter the hospital, proper treatment is recommended to them and to their local doctors. The depart- mental deficit incurred as the result of this arrangement is supported by the Mothers' Day offering of the North Carolina Baptist Churches. The clinics are operated by fourth year medical students and the house staff under the supervision of senior consultants. In order to provide both first class medical care for the patients as well as maximum teaching facilities for the students, the number of patients admitted is geared to the demands of the student body. io X Wi' 'flI ' -A 6' ' V ' .peg .qi ' I 5 6 hub-1' EYE CLINIC uouscum N , r 1 'Hi i N W iw V ii Il i, M all if W H iii i gi ii iii Fi Y Fi i 514 ru: J ir ill ji 1 ir Registration Desk Eye Clinic il' ' i Medical Clinic First Floor Corridor i ii 11 ing' A W ' ' ' --qry.4,- '- r- -V - LFVIP I 'Q-1 5 9 l E 1 if i -+ Student Conference Room X ray Urology Student Laboratory Cystoscopy 12 q u S! The dedication of an annual is often a dilhcult taskg how- ever, it posed no problem for the members of the Class of 1947. lt was their unanimous decision that their friend and counsellor, Dr, Herbert M. Vann, be chosen. His fatherly advice and reassurance during many a difhcult period has endeared him to the students. He was born in Danville, Virginia, the son of a physician. He received his medical education from Wfake Forest College and jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1917. Then, after interning at the Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn. he entered the army as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps and spent some time in France during the first World War. In 1919 he became Professor of Anatomy in this medical school. Except for one short period of absence on leave, he has held this position for the past 27 years. In 1924 he organized a medical unit of the National Guard, serving as Regimental Surgeon to the 115th Field Artillery, with the rank of Major, until 1959. Dr. Vann fills an important office at Bowman Gray as Director of Admissions and Registrar. To him belongs much of the credit for the organization and success of the school. As a teacher one of his outstanding characteristics has been his flexibility of mind. In the training of medical students he deserves credit for the development of an important fundamen- tal principle, the ability to observe accurately and comprehen- sively. It is with the greatest pleasure that the student body and the Class of 1947 dedicate this issue of the GRAY MATTER to the Major, LEONARD CACCAMO 18 eff whim I . iff? Miss Daughtry received an A.B. degree from Meredith College, following which she taught three years in the high schools of North Carolina. She received her training at the Pennsylvania University Hospital, and her post-graduate course in Obstetrics at the New York Hospital. After her post-graduate training she was for seven years Instructor and Supervisor at the Eighth Street Lying- In Obstetrical Hospital in Philadelphia. Since coming to the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in September, 1943, as Assistant Director of Nurses, she has done splendid work among the students as well as in the hospital and state at large. She resigned her position at this institution in August, 1947, in order that she might be free to assume her duties as Educa- tional Director of Professional Nursing Schools and Treasurer of the North Carolina Board of Nurse Examiners. 90 flirs.
