BLOOD BANK In -luly, I9-ll, the Blond Bank was organizetl untler the supervision of the Department of Surgery for the use of the entire community, The volume uf blood usetl is the largest vtvlume of any Civilian hlootl hank in the state The reaction rate has tallen to 2 rl per tent, making it among the lowest and safest in the nation. The department is managed ethciently hy Miss Mary Lou Moore, Technician, who is assisted hy a senior medical student and a student tcchnitian. ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY The Heart Station of the Medical School and Hospital was established in 1941 under the direction of Di R L, McMillan. lt has facilities providing for elet- trocardiograms, arterial and venous pulse tracings, graphic registration of heart murmurs and sounds, and effects of exercising. Permanent records uf all tracings done are kept and used in the research pruhlems involving cardiography. EMERGENCY OPERATING ROOM Located on the ground floor uf the hospital, the emer- gency operating room is the only one in the City of Winsttin-Salem. Registered nurses are on duty until midnight, after which time they are calletl as necessary. ,7.!Luua'xpi- .ig-9-.' a -ILL. .ff .M-..:-v,,x ' RADIOLOGY The department of Radiology consists of fourteen rooms situated on the Fifth floor of the hospital, completely equipped with the most modern radio- graphic and therapy machines. Dr. tl. P. Rousseau, Professor of Radiology, is director uf the depart- ment which trains three house officers in radiological examination and treatment and three student techni- cians. Witli the cooperation of these personnel as well .is other trained technicians, diagnostic examinations and treatments are done for the entire hospital and out-patient department, OPERATING ROOMS This department consists of ten rooms located on the tifth floor of the hospital and under the direction of Miss Lucia Shirley, Supervisor, and Miss Anne Cas- stevens, Assistant Supervisor, On duty at all times are four graduate nurses and eight student nurses and Steve .is chief of the orderlies. Here all the major thoracic, abdominal, orthopedic, urological, gynecolo- gical, .md neurosurgical surgery is done. LIBRARY The Medical Library is located on the First floor of the Medical School and contains collections in the field of medicine, surgery, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and the related sciences. More than 275 current periodicals, both domestic and foreign, and more than 175 bound sets of journals are available for reference at all times. Miss Nell Benton is director and Mrs. Richard Hardin assistant, Students are on duty in the library at night and on week-ends. CLINICAL MICROSCOPY Situated on the second floor of the medical building, this department has graduate and student technicians who perform more than 100,000 examinations per year. These examinations include the morphological studies on the blood of all patients. In the past year over 15,1100 patients were examined and treated.
