May I be moderate in everything except in knowledge of the scienceg as far as it is concerned may I be insatiable. Grant me the opportunity and the strength always to correct what I have acquired and ever to extend its domain-for knowledge is immense and the spirit of man likewise may extend indefinitely, to enrich itself daily with new acquirements. Atomic energy has been harnessed, and the World War ll has resolved by clysis, but there are left the sequelae of unrest and the fretful groping of nations for stability. We have been spared the awful task of destroying our enemies - indeed, we are privileged instead, to help bring life, and that more abun- dantly to mankind of all races and creeds. The Army and Navy programs of medical education have come and gone. Doctors who have served in uniform are steadily returning while others are going to fill their places. Some good men have gone to other fields' a few Old Faithfuls have had to pause for second wind' and many newcomers have already proved their merit. The unselfish over and above the line of duty attitude of our overworked faculty has won the admiration of the entire student body. With relief at last expansion in every direction has begun and is limitless in its possibilities. Research in ever increasing amounts is going on behind the scene in every department with much information of value being given the medical world through numerous publications. Confidence in work well done is being shown on all sides. I I Il ll I I Il ll I I I am x ll -Q' Fifi' - '- 'IF ' lf-1 ,,-wi ww- rm-.,. With the assist- ance of numerous secretaries, she types and binds all records on hospital and out patients and tiles them for permanent reference. The Record Room's standards meet the most rigid requirements of the American Medical Association. Dictaphones are supplied so that the doctors may leave very complete notes on all patients in a short time. DIETETICS Witli the direction of Miss Rosin Vance, the dieti- tians prepare and serve all meals to the patients, nurses and doctors. Besides the regular house diets, they also serve any special diet that may be necessary for a particular patient and give consultation on special feeding problems. It is because of the work of this group that an adequate and efficient dietary routine can be served in this hospital. PHARMACY The department of pharmacy is headed by Mr. E. W. Rollins who organized it in 1942. With the assistance of Miss Virginia Caudle, all the pharmacy's own compounding is done. It now occupies a large room on the First Hoor of the hospital, but plans for the new wing of the hospital include rooms for the ex- pansion of the pharmacy. CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY The laboratory ot' clinical endocrinology was establish- ed for the more specialized biologic tests. Here, also, research is done of various special problems of inter- departmental interest. The work is now being done by Dr. Richard Myers with the technical assistance of Miss Carolyn Stout. ,T 7,11-zvw-5. W 4 ,!m.L . It is with the utmost pleasure that the students of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine dedicate this issue of Gray Matter to their friend and teacher, Howard Holt Bradshaw. I will apply dietetic, hygienic, and therapeutic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment, I will do my best to keep them from harm and injustice. I will neither give a lethal dose to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly, I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy, except in accord with medical ethics. From any base uses I will guard my life and my art. I will not undertake any medical or surgical procedure for which I am not trained, but will call upon such men as are qualified for this work. Into whatever houses I may enter, I will go only for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief, and in particular of all immoral conduct. What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even out- side ofthe treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account should be spread abroad, I will keep secret. I will not knowingly and unjustly, by speech or by silence, diminish the trust reposed in another physician by his patients. If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored among men for all time to come, if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot. ANTHONY ZIRPOLI With the end of the war plans are now in operation to end in March 1946 the Army Specialized Training Program. The Bowman Gray Medical School Unit has been in operation for thirty-three months. We of the graduating class had just passed the acid test . . . Anatomy . . . when the Army took over. In the few hours alloted each week to military training we have become masters of military strategy . . . what with right, left, about face, map reading, chemical warfare and a few films about the dangers of wine, wimmen, and song. Lieutenant Fergason has been here for the past year as our executive officer. He has been ably assisted by Sgt. Zirpoli Qof athletic famej and Sgt, West. To all of them we say . . . thanks for a job well done. The excellent record made by the Medical Officers in World War II makes those of us who will follow their path prouder than ever to be members of the medical profession. 64 V , ..-- a-.a..v I ..r'!, LT R XV ROS STON QP Y H.
