Reluctantly we broke ties with family and friends to enter into the mysterious process of becoming a nurse . The first days of starry eyed enthusiasm were quickly followed by many disillusions. As we labored through each day, we real- ized that the life of a nurse is not all glamour and excitement, but many disappointments and discouragements as well. No, we're not complaining. Wie are proud of our profession and not one of us would exchange the experiences of the past three years for any amount of earthly treasure, Vile hope within these pages we have imprisoned a few of the fleeting memories, and may you once more recapture those never- toehe-forgotton moments. ,W ,W . - .... .-A- -. . .... -,.....4,,-..,,.,. ,MM..-....,......,-.....1L.64.,.mma-....f....Q..::.:..1,Q.....4..: fm 'VU P' 'NT' K' Tv VE, F 0- N A I 5 1 'Wd i I ffl'i'Ti'2 ,I'-1'iil'iAl' 111' fii'fN'!'Vi --i?'gf'?fW V 'W Page Fire' 1' .lffew Rulli Hrrlly, R. Most of us stood in awe of you or else stepped lightly and spoke guardedly. Now we know that you are one of us, because you feel as we feel. Knowing us, understanding us, loving us and serving us, you have made a unique place for yourselves in our hearts. Bones, hgures, drugs, and lectures have taken on a meaning. There are principles at the heart of things, and things are worth while only in proportion to the sound principles that lie at their heart, XVe will pride ourselves in following in your footsteps, along the rugged and endless path of duty which you have opened and pointed out to us. Allow us to express our deep sense of gratitude for the time and patience you have given us. W'hen fulfillment has crowned every wish you could wish Vllhen full to the brim and over-Howing the dish Held out for your joys: when your every prayer Has brought in reply all you asked-and to spare, XVhen the world has done all the fine things that it could for you May it then, but barely, have begun to be good to you. Dr. Rfflfurt Gurzwy Un Graduation This is a time we have long awaited lt signiiies a dream almost come true. There is sadness in knowing our training days are over But there is gladness for horizons lifted. Because we most blest have been in ways XYe owe a life-long giving of our best. True joy will come to us if we but find Tasks that are worthy even of our all. Our training days have given us treasures That priceless are and surely imperishable. VVe would not leave though mere bearers of these treasures But we would multiply them in free sharing Make life for countless others fairer, richer. Now our training days become near sacred They echo clear to us a clarion call: To use always the best that experience has taught us ln everything worthwhile that life may offer. Our quest will not be like the knightly exploits Told in Arthurian legend of war and battle But ours must be the quests that seek and find The better ways of building this our world- A world in which all lives grow nobler, purer. Thus may we as we don our uniforms of white Follow the gleam that doth immortal shine Seek ever to fullil our quest divine. Hazel Cox Page T wenty-Six Qi? I E5 I I I l X X lf 2 fX PQ SN AJN. Oh-h-h just a confusion of many misunderstood descriptions and explanations. Classes day in and day out grew monotonous for some. Many a probie went to bed with her trunks packed to awaken the next morning to a brighter and happier day with new aspects on life. ty. Rules were the foremost thought in our mind- Always stand for a capped nurse or doctor , Then October 13 Claire Wloodward decided that she would end the monotony of classes and thoughts of serving humanity as a group, and administer to the object of her affections . So- Mr. and Mrs. jimmy Bone are now living Somewhere in South Carolina . As time went on and we strived harder day by day to become Freshmen rather than Preclinicals, we found that we were to have personal interviews November 26, 1940, with Miss Bohelerfnow Mrs. Smithdeal-who was then Acting Director of Nurses, and Miss Henley, Instructor. The interview was to determine who would receive caps and who would not on january 1941-an occasion looked forward to by each of us. As each probie returned from the interview there was either happiness or sorrow written on her face. At the close of the day we experienced a very unhappy moment when we found that Kathleen Camden, Maxine Banner, Virginia Lee and Alma Cree were to say so-long to a nursing career. Onward liver strived the twenty-four. Alasel-'rances Blackwell became homesick for Georgia, this leaving twenty three. Then came Thanksgiving Holidays and again we were deprived of others-Mary Smith, due to sickness. and Mary Fishel who decided to devote all her attention to the one and only -and may I add that Mr. and Mrs. Alvin XYikle and son Richard is the name. Then on to December and Martha Skambato said goodby. january 30, 1941! Happy day!! lYhite caps were placed on each individual's headeno longer probies - Freshmen if you please! More responsibility was given us and cooperation was at its height and glory. Here comes Cupid again! Lorie lYright became the bride of Gray Holcolm and Ann Clapp and Harry Hanes sailed the seas of matrimony. Time swiftly passed and during the second year of our famous careers we began to become more adjusted to our surroundings. Un came new classes of nurses, and with each a pang of pain for we knew that it is a long and narrow path. YYith june came a new addition to our class-Mary Frances Harrison. As our third year rolled around, Averil Robertson became the bride of Pvt. Jimmy Hales-much to everyones surprise. Soon we found added to our little white caps a black band which meant Senior Nurses . Yes, we still fussed about many trivial items, just couldn't stay awake on class and as most mischevious girls, we tried to break or ignore every rule only to find new ones piled upon us. Little by little the news seeped out that Zona Tysinger was no longer Miss Tysinger,.b-ut Mrs. Cummings. She later made her exit from our little group and went to California to Join THE Lieutenant. Could it be wedding bells we hear in a distance? Must be 'cause the engagement of Hazel Cox and Elmer Stelter has been announced, Dancy is wearing a diamond on third finger, left hand, and Catherine jones is planning to be a June Bride. Cjerry Shingleton is the lucky guyj. Then followed graduation and Pittsburgh and all the excitements of each. VVell, as we glimpse behind us, we find, no matter what we did, it was done whole-heartedly and full of fun, and each member of the graduating class of 1943 can only say, It was a tedious and tremendous responsibility, yet we would not exchange it for the largest treasure in all the world. To those who have guided our footsteps, we offer our sincere thanks and gratitude, and in the years to come may they say 'NVe are proud of them. They are honoured in our realm '. Q , 'exif'- 'WPA W YgQifqp: CLASS PRUPHEQY I was lying in an operating room of the Bellevue Hospital in New York. It was just a minor thing, and I would be up and going in a week. The immaculate appearance of the operating room, the silent tread of the nurses' slippered feet, and the gastric mumblings of the old surgeon made me feel homesick for the Baptist Hospital. I knew that the nurse was giving me the anesthetic, for I smelled the sharp sickening odor. I opened my eyes to see her. She looked like someone I knew. My dull brain remembered-Era Leigh McIntosh. I felt myself slipping. Thoughts of the hospital became stronger and stronger. I thought-I'll go back next week. I'll see my old roommate Zona Tysinger Cummings and her twelve boys. I wonder if they look like her. I stood suddenly in the radio station and listened to the news reporter talking about one of my classmates-Alice Kinney. She is playing a vital role in clearing Cuba and Panama of the Purperal Sepsis that has spread so rapidly through the territory. All honor to this classmate! Then I thought of those other classmates of mine who have served in the army. I was especially proud of Grace Dancy XVhittington. How did she and her husband get in the same camp? I looked around me. Everybody was running toward the dock. Far be it from me to miss anything. I ran too. Anchored there was the most beautiful ship I have ever seen -the U.S.S. Relief, safely back from over seas. Hundreds of nurses stood on deck. Then I ran closer because that strawberry blond was none other than Marie Parker, standing in the midst of the ship's crew. Naturally the Superintendent of the Public Health Nurses was waiting to greet her. She looked stunning with her blond hair and those new brown and tan hats they're wearing so much like the soldiers. I looked closer to see the initials on it-C. J. S. Could it be Catherine jones? Almost train timegif I get to Vliinston-Salem, I'll have to start. XYe had a stopover in a little country section. I walked down the street. VVhoopsl Must be a busy lady to collide with me like that!! XVhy, thats Elwanda Madison headed to meet her doctor in the country for a home delivery. The next day we arrived in the city where the big fire had done so much damage. I went to the Emergency Shelter to see what it was like. There Mary Frances Harrison was serving as Temporary Emergency Advisor. Boy, can that little girl get around! On the train I picked up a book written by Hazel Cox Stelter Lamps in China . I know Hazel has her hands full looking after the ruins of the war and her missionary work. Likewise with Sue VYalker in the Hartford Retreat rebuilding the minds of the soldiers. IVonder what happened to Dotty Foster since she joined the Indian Service. And what has be- come of Irene Fowler and her theories of evolution since she astounded the world with them? Houses are pretty along here. Oh, look, the former Lilly Gordon Hicks. 1-2-3, how many in the carriage?? Must be a family tradition! There before me was the Baptist Hospital. I headed first for the operating room. jean Newman was rating around there-special scrub nurse for Dr. Bradshaw. Then to obstetrics-who was that on the stretcher? It looks like the ex-Dottie Peace. Yes, it must have been cause there is a new Papa gazing through the nursery window at red-headed twins-girls, naturally. Oh mel! I left the motor of my car running! I reached the car, stumbled and fell. My head was half buried in the ground. The fumes from the gas enveloped my senses. I felt queer. I heard a slow metallic sound in the hall. Someone called my name. I slowly strug- gled to my elbow and stared. Standing at the foot of my bed was Frances Southard, Professor of Nursing at Bellevue Hospital. I was weary, but a most grateful person as I observed the faces of my friends in my memory. I studied each face carefully, and in each I saw Life in its truest, richest form. I lay back, sighed and my heart cried out, Life has indeed been very kind to the class of '43. Mabel Ruth Everhart t l Page Thirly-One Q. .P C I' A i 63551 Hey, Dowel What do you think of us?
