EATON OUR CLASS SPONSOR As our sponsor for the past four years, we have learned to love him very much as a personal friend, as a teacher, and also as a guide through our class activities. There has been no problem, so large or so small, that we could not take it to him and feel assured that he would do his best to see us through. With his lively humor, he was one of us and yet he has been our guiding hand through our high school days. We, the Class of 1960, want to express our deep appreciation with a hearty THANK YOU-MR. WASHINGTCN, D.C. OCTOBER I959 AGE DA Sunday, October 18 Our class met in Warsaw and prepared to board the Pennsylvania R. R. at 2:20 P. M. We were accompanied by our class sponsor, Jim Eaton, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Anglemeyer our chaperones. Mr. Dooling, our trip organizer, also accompanied us on our trip. Mr. Nelson Eaton came to the station to give his last farewells. Af- ter we were settled on the train, we were given a brief review of our tour of itinerary. Soon, before we were ready to settle for the night, Butch and Bud surprised use all by appearing in gaily designed nightshirts. Monday, October 19 We arrived in New York at 7:00 A. M., a little tired from the night before. We went directly to the Hotel New Yorker and checked into our rooms. After breakfast, we were free until 1:00 P. M. Some of the girls went shopping, or iust became acquainted with the city. A few of them visited the ship Independence which had docked. After lunch we assembled in the lobby. We then boarded buses for a Glass top tour of Lower New York. We visited Chinatown, the' Bowery, Wall Street and other important sights. After the first Tour, we returned to the hotel for lunch. At 3:00 P. M. we left for a visit to the Statue of Liberty, via Circle Line Yacht. Most of us walked to the head of the Statue. It was a long walk and we were tired when we returned to the boat. After supper, we were given flowers for the eve- ning. At 7:00 P. M., we boarded the subway to Ra- dio City Music Hall, to see the Rockettes, the F. B. l. Story, and a stage show. The subway ride was an in- teresting experience for most of us, especially when we had to rush from the car before the door closed. After the show we walked to the Empire State Building, via Times Square. Tuesday, October 20 After breakfast, we began a glass top bus tour to the United Nations Building. At 10:00 A. M., we toured upper New York. We then returned to the hotel for lunch. The rest of the afternoon was free. Most of us took advantage of this free time and tried to observe the sites that the tours did not cover. A few of us went to the R.C.A. building, some went shopping, and others returned to visit lower New York. After dinner we as- sembled in the lobby to check out of the hotel and leave for Washington, D. C. At 10:30 P. M. we ar- rived at Washington and checked into Hotel Raleigh. After we were settled in our rooms, we heard the fire 34 sirens. Our first thoughts were that the hotel was on fire, but the fire was further on down the street. Carl Pletcher, who was anxious to get a good view of the fire, climbed out onto the air-conditioner, three stories from the ground. The next morning, after break- fast, we began a Capitol Hill Tour. We posed in front of the Capitol to have our pictures taken. After lunch we boarded the bus for a tour of Mount Vernon. We became very well acquainted with our two bus drivers, who were both constantly pulling practical iokes. Harry, one of them was assisted by a Co-captain, Carl Pletcher. He did a great iob too! This tour included the Arlington National Cemetery, with the tomb of the unknown sold- ier. A few of the girls posed for a picture in back of a tombstone with a certain familiar name on the front of it. After dinner, we began a night tour of the city. We found out that today was Mr. Anglemyer's birthday and we decided to have a surprise party. A committee was picked to arrange for this after our night tour. We rented a suite for the party and it turned out to a most enioyable evening. Thursday, October 22 Hurrah! This was the first morning we were permitted to sleep a little later. After breakfast we toured the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the Washington Momument, and the White House. We then returned to the Hotel to eat lunch and check out. Afterwards we visited the F. B. I. Building and the Smithsonian Insti- tute. After touring these places we returned to the bus and found a little negro boy singing for a few of the kids. Russell sang a few songs'for all of us before we left to board the train. Most of our last hours on the train were passed away by group singing. A few of the boys hung a sign above the door, reading The Hall of ivy. Of course we will never forget our 1-2-3-wowl That was yelled when a passenger would walk through our car. Mr. Dooling left earlier than we did, but most of us were awake and gave our last farewells. We couldn't have had a more pleasant organizer to travel with us on our trip than he. Friday, October 23 We were very tired when we climbed from the train at 6:30 A. M. in Warsaw. We all felt a little sorrowful that the trip must end, but it will be forever in our memory. We had a very enioyable, educational, and per- fect senior Class Trip. Harry and Co-captain, Butch! The name sounds familiar' Our little entertainer! Mr. Dooling, our trip organizer? The purpose ot the Girls' Athletic As- sociation is that those interested in athletics may have the privilege of participating in clean and wholesome sports under the supervision of a sponsor, Mrs. Borgman. Any high school girl is eligible and awards are given for participation in dif- ferent activities. Points are given for each accomplished activity. For 150 points, a pin is given, 250 points a pennant, 350 points a plaque, and 355 points a jacket. Each year we recognize an outstanding girl who is honored at an annual spring banquet. Our money making proiects cov- er these expenses. Our big money making proiect for this year was Christmas Card sales, and this year two high sales girls are being recognized. There is much to do before the deadline, and the deadline must be met. We, the annual staff, hope that you enioy this book as much as we enioyed putting the work into it. MEMORIES ? ' 'S' wwf COMFO-SLEEP INC The Student Council, sponsored by our princi- pal, Mr. Eaton, does an excellent job of helping program and govern the school. One of their duties is to provide some of the entertainment before the student body each month. In the past, this enter- tainment has included movies, speakers, and pro- fessional acts. Also, the council takes action on important de- cisions to be made concerning the school. On special occasions they present a special program such as the Christmas show. Student Council representatives are elected from each class and school Club. Our own Waka- Hi-Lites plays its part in the school routine in a fine manner. Mr. Rogers, the staff's'advisor, patiently aids the Hi-Lites production through-out the year. The paper is scheduled to be ready for distribution every two weeks. Occasionally, there is a greater span of time than fourteen days from one paper to the next, but generally the staff does a fair iob of meeting deadlines. Each staff member is given an assignment for every issue of the Hi-Lites. There are a few stan- dard columns such as Club and Class , Snoopin' Sports , and 'Kiddy-Korner. ln January of each year the staff is reorganized and vacancies left by the seniors are filled by un- derclassmen who are interested and have the time to spend in this extracurricular activity. Theyuhave complete charge of the library, under the di- rection of Mrs. Miller, the school librarian. The girls keep the book shelves in order, maintain a file which shows the location of each book, and assist the other students in locating in- formation for class assignments or general information. They meet whenever necessary. Some members attend a Library Conference held annually at Indiana University. The club is responsible for any publicity of new books in the library. This they do by keeping a bulletin board and holding a book review be- fore an assembly. ln preference to this, they may prepare a list of all new books pur- chased by the school. The music they play covers a wide variety At the basketball games, they provide songs with a spirited, up-tempo swing. However, the mood changes to a more serious nature when the band rehearses for their annual spring concert and the contest. The band contests involve more than many peo- ple imagine. The contestants are graded not only on their presentation of music itself, but on their poise and attitude before they go before the iud- ges. From the moment they arrive on the scene, they are under the close scrutiny of the iudges. With Mr. Montieth, their director, to assist them, they improve their individual and group skills. It is hoped that they will be able to exchange concerts with other schools in the near future. Also, they conduct a series of concerts in the town square dur- ing the summer. Every year our band leads the parade of masqueraded grade students through the town on Halloween. They attend con- tests where they compete with other bands in the county.
