Culley Langdon Webber Hays Baker Baim Otterson 1953 - 1954 Basketball Summary Coach Jay Childers' valiant ten opened the Basketball season by losing the opener to Umapine Chiefs 33-30. But this didn't stop the Cards by any means as they came back to win their next six games. The Cards on Dec. 4, took the W. W. B's, 61-41. Then they traveled to Dayton on Dec. 8, to come home with their second win 53-32. Columbia visited the Cards to go home defeated 68-41. Being host to Asotin on Dec. 12, the Cards again showed their ability to win by 53-31. Traveling to Pomeroy Dec. 15, the Cardinals came home victorious. This was big Jack Otterson's night for the Cards, he canned 26 points for a score of 64-47. On Dec. 18, the Cards came through with their sixth win by taking Joseph 64-49. The Red Birds then had a bad night at Prescott just to comeihome with their second loss 58-56. This game was in an overtime. At the end of the game the score was 51-51. This was the only league game the Cards lost. Taking this loss like sportsmen, the league winners opened up. They gave their coach, Jay Childers, the best season a coach would want by winning twelve straight games. During the Christmas Holidays, the Cardinals traveled away from home. They played two teams at Joseph, and won both of them. Joseph 35-67 and Enterprise 36-59. Jan. 5, still keeping up the good work, the Red Birds sat proudly over the Dayton Bulldogs 82-58. The St. Pats Irish also abided the Cards by giving them their fourth win 62-52. Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Cards traveled to Toucher to tromp them 76-39. ln this game George wood didn't see action because of a bad ankle. Jan, 15, the Cardinals topped Columbia 68-43. On Jan. 19, the Cardinals again took W. W. B's, ' 54-25. Getting an early jump, the Cards topped Pomeroy 48-32. Seeing the Prescott Tigers for the second time and not fugetting their loss, the Cards stopped their opponents 75-49, with Jack Otterson hitting 27 points. Stepping out, the Red Birds edged the Irish 60-59. Bob Webber plunked two quick baskets after being tied 18-18. This put the Cardinals in third place in the State Big Five. Playing the Umapine Chiefs Feb. 2, the Cards won 79-47. On Feb. 5, Touchet was the last game for the Waitsburg Cardinals' regular season. They stopped them short and clinched the County Crown by a score of 81-46, giving the Red Birds a season of 18 wins and 2 losses. 7-1 league games, 11-1 seasonal games. SUB-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT The Cardinals went into the Sub-District Tournament by playing their first game with Pomeroy at the Walla Walla Gym. This score was 47-33, in favor of Wait-Hi. Jack Otterson was high with 20 and Bob Webber next with 10. The next game was played the following night against Washtucna and again the Cards won 45-44. Otterson had 16, followed by G. Wood's 12 points. In the last game for the Sub-District Championship, the Red Birds played Prescott for the third time just to win 47-46. Otterson hit 14 and Langdon 9. Ted Collins went to the free throw line with two shots. He missed the first and dumped the second to win this game. Then there was a helpful shot from Randy Culley from way out, with a second to go. This tied the game but Prescott pro- tested. Waitsburg was allowed the points and again Culley helped settle the final issue with three points in the three-minute overtime. This put the Cards first in the Big Five. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT After winning the Sub-District Tournament the Red Birds traveled to Colfax to play in the district tournament Drawing Colfax in the first game the cards came through with a win of 63-43. Jack Otterson was high with 19 followed by Randy Culley with 14. The second game showed little for the Cardinals as they were topped 53-34 by Kahlotus. lack Otterson fouled out in the final Stanza. For the fourth time the Cards met Prescott to lose their second game 56-47 and to drop out of the tourney play. Ted Collins was high with 19 followed by Otterson with 10.
