One of the great ultimates in education is causing a goal and its achievement to become one. Our Mr. Youngquist has experienced this rare satisfaction. Under his guidance, students in classes of Mechanical and Industrial Design have in national competition of a thousand schools during the past seven years won first prize six times, winning the second prize the odd year. Three times did his student entries win all four prizes and many honorable mentions. The Annual Staff is eagertto express the thanks of Waite for his contribution toward Waite's national recognition and for adding so materially to VVaite,s long list of traditions and accomplishments. 14 AITE S ATIO ALLY KNOWN I DLISTRIAL ARTS DRAWING COMPETITIO 1 ,Y-its Iggy! Our able President, Dave Bitter, who was also Area Student Council Vice President, developed a workshop for all Club presidents and members of organizations, for a part of the Open House program. The Student Council was in charge of the Turkey Day Mass Meeting, at which our Queen was crowned, and managed the biggest Varsity Drag ever. Along with scheduling all club activities and the successful sock hops, it arranged for the sale of Thrift Stamps. The Area Student Council Dance provided an opportunity to meet with the leaders of other schools. A worth-while project was the reading of a prayer each morning over the public address system. FRENC CLUB One of the purposes of the French Club is learning more about the country and the people of France. This is done through the student reports given on France and the movies they see at their meeting in Room 308. They also have a lot of fun playing French games. On October 31, the French Club had their annual roast at Pearson Park. For the Tax Stamp Drive, the club was divided into two teams. The losing team gave a party for the winning team. Also, the person who got the most tax stamps won a prize. Tasty dishes were furnished at the Progressive dinner held on March 7. The club had a lot of fun at this dinner. To close this very successful year, the French Club held their picnic in the Spring. We wish to thank Miss Cosgray for her guidance, for this wonderful year could not have been possible without her help. 90 President .... Vice President Secretary .... Treasurer . . . Chaplain .... FUTURE TEACHERS QF AMERICA The purpose of the Future Teachers of America is the pro- motion of the interest of those students who are considering the profession of teaching. The programs, educational and entertaining, illustrate the problems of the classroom. Ushering for the open house held in October and sewing re- freshments for the monthly faculty meetings make this club one of the most useful organizations around Waite. On November 8, 1957, a group of delegates were sent to Bowling Green for an all-day session. In May, new officers were elected. The success of this organization is due to the eagerness of each member and of the qualified guidance of Miss Cosgrey. President ....... .. Barbara Brancheau Vice President . . ..... At the mass-meeting between our old rival, Scott, the Choir sang for the Coronation of the queen and her court. The Christmas season brought many performances for the choir such as: the annual singing at the Kiwanis Club, at radio station WTDS, the Baltimore and Ohio Rai1road's Christmas dinner, and Christmas nativity program at school. The Area High School Choral Festival on February 9th was topped off by the honor of having Mr. Valter Poole, as guest conductor. Our Spring Music Festival was given by the combined forces of the Choir, Band, Glee Club, and Ensembles. Contest for choirs throughout Ohio was a wonderful experience for every member of our choir. As the year progressed the choir again had the opportunity to sing for the Good Friday services at school, at Trinity Church, and for the East Side churches. High lights of the social events were the Choir-Band roast in November and the Choir roast in June. The Choir finished its school year with many accomplishments well done for which it extends to Mr. Evans a most deserved thanks. l' M E 'i -A -Q K 2 J' 7 A5 f 1 X. 1 .ga .4 gfpll .. I - . With their advisor, Miss Linville, they have undertaken several projects such as a roast at Fort Meigs, the Sock-Hop held after the Waite-Central football game, a trip to Cleveland under the sponsorship of our teachers, mass meetings, bake sale, coke-chip Christmas party, and they also decorated the halls for color week. Any student in Waite High is eligible to join and become a part of this growing organization as long as he is interested in our activi- ties and is willing to co-operate to carry out our purposes. We are the first high school in Toledo to have a card section portraying both letters and pictures. We would like to thank Miss Linville for giving us so much help and guidance during our second year of organization. ARSITY BASKETBALL The 1957-1958 basketball season opened on a successful note as Waite defeated Sylvania and Whitmer in the first two games. Then as the Indians moved into the city league competi- tion, inexperience began to show itself and along with several injuries made the going very rough. The team finally broke through with a thrilling overtime win over Woodward. In the next four games, Waite played outstanding ball. The team defeated Libbey, lost a well played ball game to Central, and then came back with two more wins over St. Francis Waite ..... ..... 6 0 Sylvania .... .... 4 9 Waite... ...6l Whitrner ....5O Waite ..... ..... 4 3 Libbey ....... .... 5 2 Waite. . . ..... 36 Woodward .... . . . .63 Waite ..... .... 4 4 Central ..... .... 6 6 Waite... ...49 Newark ....73 Waite ..... . . .54 Maumee .... . . . .71 Waite ..... . . .46 DeVilbiss . . . . . . .51 Waite ..... .... 3 9 Clay ..... .... 5 1 Waite ..... . . .48 Scott . .. . . . .73 in overtime, and DeVilbiss.
