Fetters is one of the busiest faculty members at Waite. In addition to his regular teaching duties, he is also track, cross country, and varsity basketball coach and athletic ticket manager. Mr. Fetters attended Oberlin College and the Uni- versity of Toledo, graduating from the University with a bachelor of science degree. His hrst teaching and coaching was done at Attica, Ohio. From there he went to Woodward, where he stayed for three years. In 1941 he came to Waite. During his eleven years at Waite he has taught orientation, mathematics, geography, and history. Coach Fetters has been very successful with his cross country team, winning nine championships dur- ing the last eleven years. He has coached the track team since 1942, producing several individual stars. His career as basketball coach started in 1941 when he took over the freshman team. He continued work- ing with this same group, for he advanced to coaching the lightweight team in 1942-43, and in the fall of 1943 he took over the work of varsity coach, a position he still holds. Mr. Fetters' athletic activities have not been confined to coaching, for he was in charge of the equipment room from 1941-1944 and has been athletic ticket manager for all sports since the year 1944. Outdoor activities occupy Mr. Fetters' time in the summer. For seven of the last ten years he has been director of the summer camp of the Toledo Boys' Club at Camp Big Silver in Michigan. He spends any leisure time he can find with his wife, two sons, and one daughter. In spite of his busy schedule, Mr. Fetters is always ready to give help and advice to the members of his teams, taking a genuine interest in their problems and difficulties. He is very understanding and thoughtful, a real friend to the fellows who work with him. The staff of the Purple am! Gola' hopes that the dedication of the 1952 edition can in part repay Mr. Fetters for his generosity in time and effort and his interest in Waite High School. We realize that Coach doesn't demand extra attention and Commendation for a job well done, but we want him to know that he is truly appreciated by the student body. Qi' ref, ff b X QW 0 VN W W WM W ! Georgia Engler W i Kenneth liriksen 1 l l ce e e i enzor larry Here we are at the end of that high school road. As we shake our heads and awake to the fact that we're about to graduate, we look with fondness on the four years spent in the halls and classrooms of Wziite. OF course our last year was the best of all. During this year we were the envied, looked-up-to seniors. There was the Senior Prom and Banquet given in our honor at the Commodore Perry Ballroom, January 18. The Baccalaureate Service held at Trinity Episcopal Peggv Got i I rieil Carole H i tchcock c Church on june I, and Commencement at the Para- mount Theater on june 6, were impressive occasions, if a little sad. For the first time in the Commencement exercises the girls wore white caps and gowns while the boys wore traditional blue. As have the senior classes of the past, we have also found Miss Marion Hart to be a helpful class advisor and we wish to take this opportunity to thank her for her able guidance. S am Schaeffer john Gnlyas Ron jncohs 70 My indent Because president-elect john Galyas was not in school the first semester, Ronald Jacobs took over the duties of that office. Enthusiam was created by the Student Council mass meetings for the DeVilbiss and the Scott football games. To celebrate the victory over Scott, the Student Council held the annual Varsity Drag on Thanksgiving night where football queen Nancy Falor reigned. A custom that was established last year of taking pictures for student activity cards was carried out this year on February 28. On February 29, the District Student Council, of which W11ite's Student Council is a member, held a dance in the Naval Armory. ozzncil The purpose was to help the students of the various schools become better acquainted. Again Wziite was invaded by the eighth grade students on their annual visiting day, March 19. They were given a tour of the building and an exhibition by the gym classes. All this took place under the leader- ship of the Student Council. The Commercial Club and the llnited Nations Club were added to the many organizations of Wzlite when the Student Council granted them their charters. The year was closed with a formal installation of the new officers in the auditorium on May eighth. The council wishes to extend thanks and appre- ciation to their woi'thy advisor, Mrs. Victoria Canfield. Ruiz I Clara Meeks, Miry Capol-nianco, .loyce Snyder. Betty Kiss. Among the many interesting programs were the talks given by Miss lidythe Bumgardner on her trip to Guatemala, Miss Beth Burman of Oakdale School on her trip to Germany, Andre Mannik of Estonia fa stu- dent at Tllj on his life in Estonia and Germany during Wforld Wzir ll and Reverend Arnold H. Clrueber of St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Todays Youth and Education. Obviously the National Honor Society keeps its members adequately informed on many and varied subjects. This is one of the reasons for the desired memberships into this club. In the spring and fall the members are chosen by a student and faculty vote. They are chosen for their outstanding qualities of character, scholarship, leader- ship, and service. They are then inducted into the club in a special auditorium session. A recognition service honoring all the grades for their achievement in scholarship, citizenship, leader- ship, and school activities was held May 16 and 22. The year's activities were summed up with a roast in May. At the end of the basketball season the mothers of the basketball team were honored at a program in the auditorium. The main speaker was Mr. Robert Rettig, DeVilbiss varsity basketball coach. The theme for this year was reports on Broadway plays and operas. The juniors presented skits which added variety to the literary program. The social events, under the guiding hands of the advisors, have been numerous. The initiations, enjoyed more by the members than by the pledges, were held at the homes of Virginia Scofield and Barbara Cbysiski. In the early autumn the club sponsored a football mass meeting for the Central game, Signe Lindberg acting as chairman. A recognition program honoring the cross-country track team and their mothers was given in November. Another high-light of the year was the theater party in january. Waite 7 DeVilbiss 6 A scrappy Tiger team held Waite scoreless in the first half but the Indians sparked by Stan Sterger, roared back and scored a touchdown and the all- important extra point to nose out the Tigers. Out- standing on the line was Dale Barber. Stan Sterger was the big man in Waite's offensive attack. Waite 27 Alliance I9 Once again the Indians rallied in the second half to top their opponents. This time it was highly rated Alliance who was the victim. Trailing 13 to 7 at half time, the Indians came back with three touchdowns by Buddy Peacock, one on a 95 yard kickoff return. Stan Sterger scored the other Waite touchdown plus three points after the touchdown. Williams lead the team on defense, and Peacock was the big boy in the Indian backlield. Waite 20 Woodward 6 Waite's third victory of the season was at the ex- pense of Woodward's Polar Bears. The high light of the game was Danny Zunk's 75 yard punt return for a touchdown. Other scores were by Stan Sterger and Fred Blanton. John Veres added three extra points to the Waite total. Dan Zunk and Bill Cummings sparked the Indian attack. Wzlite 22 Canton McKinley 6 Scoring on runs of 87 and 75 yards spaced three minutes apart, Buddy Peacock broke the very close game wide open. The Indians led at half time, but the Tigers scored twice in the second half to avenge a previous defeat at the hands of the Wziite gridders. Stergers backlield play and Pocse's line play were about the only bright spot in W1iite's attack. Wziite 39 Central I9 Playing their best game of the year, Wzrite's war- riors came away with the scalp of the highly touted Irish. For the first half the game was fairly close, but Waite broke it wide open in the second half. Sharing in scoring were Peacock, Sterger, Zunk, Giroux, and Galuzny, with Veres adding three extra points to the Waite cause. This game was sweet revenge for the Indians, having lost to the Irish last year. The entire team deserves credit for this fine game, but standouts were Davis, Cummings, Pocse, XX!inebrenner, Zunk, Sterger, Peacock, and Giroux. Varsity Football 2 aziffify Wziite 0 Massillon 21 Versatile Ace Grooms, Massilloifs all-state full- back, lead his team to a hard-earned victory over the Indians. Both ends, Ron Keaton and Hank I-Ielmke, plus halfback Dan Zunk gave hne accounts for themselves in this game. Wzlite 7 Mansfield I9 Once again the Indians held for three quarters but folded in the fourth as Mansheld turned two inter- cepted passes into touchdowns. Bob Thomas on the line and Stan Sterger in the backheld were outstanding for Wziite. ooiball Wziite 7 Warreii 26 Although Wziite outrushed the Invaders, their in- ability to cope with XXfarren's superior passing attack spelled defeat for the Indians. Buddy Peacock scored XXfaite's only touchdown, and Veres added the extra point. Two Wziite bright spots were the running of Stan Sterger and Peacock.
