During the past several years the gremlin and other similar creatures have gained a greater prominence throughout the worldg however, the American Indian race of the gremlin has been in existence at Waite High School for many years. This year these little characters have left their former places of seclusion and have linally penetrated into the annual itself. We of the staff of the Purple and Gold hope that you will enjoy and often refer to this collection of the ramblings and varied experiences of our mischievous and ever-present little friends. lHHllUlElINllNlS Adminiytration Clazrrer Organiqationr Atbleticf School Li e HlIllIIHlIUN... Although Miss Cecile Vashaw has been at Waite but a short time, actually five years, she has, during that time, established herself as one of the best liked and competent members of the faculty. Under Miss Vashaw's supervision, the Waite band has risen from mediocrity to one of the foremost bands in the state, the present band having played, by request, at several important civic and sports events. A graduate of New York University, Miss Vashaw taught at Elmore, Ohio, and various Toledo schools before coming to Waite. On her arrival at Waite she was in charge of the band and the orchestra, but soon the glee club was put under her direction. The choir, which was originated and developed by Miss Vashaw, sings at churches and many religious programs. Several years ago she wrote the music for Waite's Alma Mater. Besides her direction of the 210 students which compose the music depart- ment, she plays in several musical organizations including The Toledo Friends of Music and Mu Phi Epsilon. Much of her time is also spent directing Waite's music organizations at their outside perform- ances. The 1946 Staff of the Purple and Gold is proud to dedicate this 52nd edition of the annual to Miss Vashaw. Pk! Two one-act plays were given: For Whom the Telephone Rings and High School Daze. The class gave a skating party and sponsored a football mass meeting. Of course you went to the J-Hop, and if you're lucky enough to be a junior you sported a shiny new ring'-so much excitement you're reluctant to become a senior. In order to gain membership in this organization, students must qualify in all these things, and be selected both by the faculty and the members. After induction, members are permitted to wear the coveted flaming torch and keystone shield, emblem of the group. The flrst semester induction service was held November 15, 1945. The deserving seniors who were inducted at this time heard a very capable speaker, Reverend Paterson, of Point Place Congregational Church. The April induction presented Reverend Mayer of Epworth Methodist Church as guest speaker who gave a very inspirational message. Each year the Honor Society holds recognition services for the students of Waite who have done outstanding work. It also gives a scholarship to some worthy senior. As a means of raising money for this scholarship, two programs were given. Information Please, the student quiz on December 10, had Russell Perry of WTOL as master of ceremonies. March 7, Bob Evans of WSPD quizzed the teachers. At a Halloween party in the library, the club entertained the officers of the Clay High School chapter. Games and refreshments provided a good time for all. The club wishes to thank its very able advisors, Miss Mildred Burns and Miss Gertrude Moore, for the assistance they have given throughout the year. f5l f X J Prerident .......,... ......... Paul Weiss, possessing the patience and fortitude necessary for the presidency of the Council, presided at all the meetings. Twice a month the entire Council held meetings where ideas were discussed. This year the most important issue up for debate was the point system regarding the officers of the organizations at Waite. After two months of discussion, it was finally agreed upon to revise the point system and take steps to enforce it. if' Rau' Row Razr Rau' Razz R011 I 2 3 4 5 6 joe David, james Hodges, Clayton Scott, Bill Scheanwald, Dallas Schmidt, Clair Francis, Dick 'I-laberstock, Ted Stevens, Edwin Kolatorowicz, Bob Smith. An attempt was made to eliminate faculty supervision in the refectory, but after a meeting of the student body the idea was dropped. A suggestion box was also set up in the office for the purpose of receiving written student sug- gestions which were discussed at the directors' meetings. The principal social event of the year was a hayride and roast held at Pearson Park and Ottawa Park respectively. The most important of the many extra curricular performances the Waite band put forth during the 1946-17 season were playing for the News Boys, parade, opening of Wocvdville Road, spryly strutting at the Detroit Briggs Stadium, participating in all State Board Musical Convention in Cleveland, and the band concert held every year. The band showed itself in glorious, snappy reviews at all football games whether at home or out of town. The outstanding talent here is recognized city wide and most certainly sometime in the future will be known nationally. Because of the individual effort contributed by every member, the orchestra, under Miss Cecile Vashaw's direction, reached prominence. Some of the activities in which the orchestra participated in the 1945-46 season were the Y.M.C.A. meeting and the annual concert given March 15th. They were also very willing to give up their time to go in groups to appear in radio programs or as a service to the community. For recreation, the members had access to the game room before and after meetings. The membership this year was much larger and more active than in recent years. A Halloween Party, a hayride, and a Christmas Party were held for the members and their guests. With the assistance of several other East Toledo Hi-Y organizations, the Sr. Hi-Y held a conference and banquet at Euclid M. E. Church on April 25th. Those attending participated in discussion groups of their own choice led by competent leaders. The Senior Friendship and Senior Hi-Y again presented the Easter program at Waite, April 12th. Several of the members represented the Hi-Y at the annual basketball and swim- ming tournaments held in the Central Y.M.C.A. The Indians gener- ated their power in the third quarter to provide for their margin of victory. Gillespie, Gregus, and Camp- bell ripped the Central line to shreds with Campbell going over for both scores. Captain Clint Knitz and jim Boyle were Waite's main defense. WAITE 34 WOODWARD 0 The Indians worked as a championship team in their 34-0 triumph over the hapless Polar Bears. The touch- down parade was headed by Bill Gregus, with Cald- well adding four points by placement. WAITE 6 LIBBEY 0 The Waite Indians continued on their merry way by ending the domination of the Libbey Cowboys over the city schools by outscoring them 6-0 in a sea of mud. Waite held a convincing margin in statistics and as a result gained undisputed possession of top honors in the city standing. A Canning to Gillespie pass set up the touchdown with Gregus barreling across for the tally. Clint Knitz and Elmer Scallish played a whale of a game on the line. WAITE 27 DE VILBISS 6 Waite's strong eleven came out victorious by outclassing the DeVilbiss Tigers by a decisive score of 27-6. When the Tigers displayed power in the first half, the Indians stiffened defensively to go on to win. Bill Gillespie scored two touchdowns. Pat Kelley became the first Waite lineman to score this season. WAITE 26 CENTRAL 7 Exhibiting power and deception, the Waite gridders fashioned an easy 26-7 triumph over Central Catholic. Bill Gregus, aided by fine blocking by Dawson and Boyle, sidestepped 66 yards for a tally in the opening period. Don Kowalka and Clinton Knitz, charging hard, blocked punts which set up other scores. Gregus, Gillespie, and Campbell alternated ball carrying with Gregus crossing the Irish goal three times. bpzmpianf WAITE 21 WOODWARD O Showing superiority in every phase of the game, the first string quickly ran up a lead of 21 points in the initial quarter. They retired to the bench early in the second quarter to watch the remainder of the squad battle the Polar Bears on even terms. The game was still in its infancy when Campbell and Gillespie broke loose for scores. WAITE 27 LIBBEY 0 The Waite Indians decisively trounced the Libbey Cow- boys 27-0, thereby eliminating any existing doubt of its supremacy in the city. The power-laden Indians possessed entirely too much all-around offensive and defensive power. In two games, the Cowboys were able to penetrate the Indian territory only once and that was for four yards. Campbell and Gillespie raced around end for scores while Gregus hit the center for his two touchdowns. The Indians exhibited terrific hitting power and blocked like professionals. Captain Knitz played his usual steady, dependable game at center. WAITE 27 MANSFIELD 12 The state scholastic limelight was centered on the Waite-Mansfield game. Before a crowd of 6,500 fans the Tygers made Waite's bid for its eighth straight vic- tory a rough one before bowing to our Indians 27-12. Bill Gillespie and Jim Campbell scampered 31 yards and 40 yards respectively around right end for scores. Bill Gregus' sharpshooting was outstanding as he fired two passes, for 60 and 35 yards, to Campbell and Gil- lespie who went 25 yards and 15 yards for touchdowns. The durable Knitz played this rugged game with a broken hand. WAITE 46 DE VILBISS 0 Waite's slashing and smashing gridders romped for six touchdowns in the last half to overcome a determined DeVilbiss Tiger bid. End Bob Dedo scored the only touchdown in the first half on a pass from Gregus. Dis- playing their usual form in the second half, the Indians galloped to win with Gillespie, Gregus, Carson, and Schaetzke doing the scoring. 96 R0u'1-Jim Martin, Ted Stevens, Dick Davis, Ed Lane, Mgr., joe Kovesdi, jim Schaetzke, Wglltei' Young. WAITE 52 SCOTT 0 WAITE O CANTON LINCOLN 0 Exhibiting a pulverizing running attack with practically impregnable defense, our Indians handed the Scott Bulldogs a humiliating 52 to O drubbing. The wind was cold and the Indians were hot. Bill Gregus, the city's leading scorer, went over for four touchdowns. Although Waite's entire forward wall performed in brilliant fashion, the work of Captain Knitz, Pete Vas, jack Dawson, and Elmer Scallish was particularly note- worthy. The Waite Indians' eleven game winning streak was snapped when a strong Canton Lincoln Lion team battled the Indians to a scoreless deadlock at Fawcett Stadium in Canton to determine the mythical state championship before 21,000 enthusiastic fans. It was a tough, hard-fought game between two evenly matched teams. Every member of the Indian eleven played good ball, with the work of Kowalka, Vas, Gregus, Scallish, Young, and Campbell especially outstanding. 97 Roz1'1fReed Hunter, john Kaduk, jim Lippert, Ray Henzler, Andy Molnar, john Lee, Charles Papio, Dick Vergiels, Leon St. john l?oz1'24Don Konolf, Chuck Carey, Dick Hamriclc, Bill Higes, Ja ck Momany, George Roth, Bill Bumbera, Rudy Masell, john Wy- gandt, George Eckerman, George Nesteroff, Coach Konnert lIrm'3-Don Sturgill, john Wagner, jim Berning, Dwight Gould, Norman Patterson, Robert Jacobs, Dan Seemann, Lyle Myrice, Walter Seaman, Ed Romp, George Antoine, Bob McKinley meme ooiball The Reserve football team under the coaching and direction of Mr. George Konnert experienced a favorable season, finishing in second place in city league competition. In their first two games the Reserves gained victories over Woodward 19-0 and Central 14-13. The Indians ran up against Libbey and were subdued 6-0. With more experience and knowledge of the game of football behind them, the Waiters were able to triumph in their final city games defeating Scott 15-6 and rolling over DeVilbiss 19-0. An exciting game was played under the lights against a heavier and experienced Clay varsity team. The Indians were leading at the half 7-6, only to be downed in the last quarter to lose 18-7. They closed a successful season traveling to Holland to triumph over their varsity 6-O. Outstanding members of the squad were Myrice, Seemann, Lee, Carey, Papio, Wagner, Lippert, Sturgill, Antoine, Hodges, and Nauman. Ninety-six green players answered the first practice call, with thirty-three being kept for the season. Perrysburg Freshmen and Lightweights, Whitmer Lightweights, and Clay Freshmen and Reserves all fell victims to our Papooses. Steve Katich and Bill Thomas, fast and clever backs, and Joe Hllebar, Bill White, Paul Van Camp, and Don Smith on the line were instrumental in bringing such a line record to the Waite Freshmen. Bill ill-j'6l',f azrrizjy azrkefbazll Xlifith apparently a good nucleus of lettermen from the previous year on hand, basketball prospects in November appeared good. However, as the season went on, repeated changes in the make-up of the stluad acted as a handicap, and not until late season did the team settle down to consistent team play. Ball handling improved but the inability to cash in on scoring chances hurt. One good consistent scorer would have turned the result in several games, but this play was ever lacking. Team spirit was excellent. At the beginning of the season the Indians met with heartening success, winning three out of tlie first live games. XVaite liell before Libbey because of the lack of practice for the football players who had just hnished their season at Clanton, lt appeared that Wiiite was headed for a successful season when they met their bitter rivals, the Central lrish, and let them down 29-28 in a great game. However, the Indian live was stopped and, although revisions in the lineup and other alteration in ollense were made, the XVaiters seemed unaccountably stymied. 7 Toward the end of the season they made a valiant attempt to snap out of their slump. Moving over to Scott, the Indians upset the heavily-favored Scott Bulldogs 28-26. The season concluded with the game in the district tournament. Libbey had to iight to win over a determined Indian live 35-53. Bill Gregus was the team's leading scorer with Captain Jim Schaetzke performing creditably offens- ively and defensively. Rutherford, Roper, and Schnell are the graduating seniors who are turning the task of winning next year to Selee, Schaetzke, Gregus, Watkins, Seemann, and Nauman. All indications point to a team next year that will again put Waite among the forerunners of the league. Coach Bill Fetters is to be commended for his untiring efforts and interest during such a discouraging and disappointing season. These three players were promoted to the varsity after the end of their season for the district tournament. Spencer, Dukes, Yenrick, Horst, and Hansen, the starting tive, showed promise and improvement as the season advanced. The regular substitutes, Young, XXfhitson, Furman, Myrice, O'Shea, and DeArmand, also saw action in several games. The entire squad had plenty of pep and enthusiasm. They were pushed by a large squad of runners, many of whom will be heard from in the future. Both the cross country and track teams were again coached by Mr. Fetters. 106 Track With seasoned material lacking, the track team met with only mediocre success. Weakness in the sprints, hurdles, pole vault, and high jump could not be overcome by the strength in the weights and distance runs. This is to the little fellows, the unnoticed bench- warmers who were out in the heat, mud, wind and cold, who worked just as hard as the lettermen, and usually harder for they were the testing ground for the varsity. They were the boys who were out on the field every afternoon after school playing and sweating for three or four hours and then home for homework. The point is this: they were loyal to the team without hope of reward-no letter for third stringersg loyal because they knew glory meant work and the varsity man of tomorrow is the scrub of yesterday. Now you've heard about the scrub, next year you'll hear from the varsity man. dZ67Z6Zdl MARCH: 4 Junior Class Skating Party. 7 Honor Society Quiz Information Please! with teachers on panel, Quizmaster Bob Evans. , 8 Glee Club DancefSpring Frolic-Betty Bergin's Or- chestra. 15 Benefit Basketball game 20-17.
