The losses were at the hands of the Waianae Seariders and the Leilehua Mules, while the tie was against the Campbell Sabers. The team was highlighted by two upset victories over Castle and Kahuku in which the boys played extremely well. Waipahu also prevailed over Pearl City in our Homecoming Game . The team was lead by Captains James Moody, Luis Roig, Manu Petaia and Laotoa Satele. James, Manu, and Rory Kim were first team All-State selectionsg while Laborday I-Iunkin, Ion Corrales, Guy Dano, Greg Saquilon and Andrew Moody were also mentioned . 'I'l1rough mud, wind, and rain the agile and spirited Marauders remained in the thick of battle in every game they played . They accepted their defeats and victories like true sportsmen. Much credit goes to the team's coaches and backers from whom they acquired the skills and poise and the support. All hail our football team for a job well done! But those who have been inside often emerge shaking their heads and talking about thelneed for a school psychiatrist. In fact, fourth period at the workroom has earned several nicknames: All Mac's children, As the paper turns, The Young and the Reckless, and best of all, One Flew over the Cane Tassel Nest! We even have our own MacMurphy! Of course, we at Cane Tassel resent being called crazy. You'd go nuts, too, if you had as many deadlines as we do. Our editor, Allyn Tabata, even tried to commit suicide once. CLucky thing the conference table isn't very highly The staff members are relatively sane, considering the situation. Oh, Iris does laugh like a seal, and Larry, our photogra- pher, hits the ceiling once in a while Cwhich is pretty hard for a guy who's only 2'4 J. And people have been known to injure their hands while trying to beat up an IBM typewriter. Come to think of it, one of Susan's screams reportedly regis- tered 9.8 on the Richter scale, and they say the building shook the time that Gay threw a desk against the wall. Of course, whenever there's a full moon, certain Leo members have been rumored to grow suspicious looking beards . . . Leo meetings are real events. Members have learned to duck as they walk on the door, to avoid President Janice Uemori's famous Flying gavel. Vice-President Linda Kubojiri is usually walking around in a daze, while Secretary Lily Watanabe scribbles frantically as she tries to write down Janice's screams and groans in the minutes. On the other side of the room, a few boys playing table hockey ignore Janice as she pounds holes in a desk with her head . What are you guys doing over there? asks Sergeant-at-Arms Susan Toyama, idly assassi- nating mosquitoes with her portable BB gun. Oh, just pucking around, answer the hockey players. In the comer, advisor C111'IiS Young suddenly breaks into a fit of hysterical giggles and promptly chokes on his lollipop. Someone asks where Club Treasurer Joel Muraoka is. Working on college applications, answers a member. He still has 25 more forms, 15 personal letters, 12 compositions, 10 bribes, 6 threats, and 2 love letters to go! Of course, Leo Club does a lot of worthwhile things. They picked up rubbish, cleaned up local bus stops, assisted the local Lions Club, worked in the Band Booster's carnival, painted stairways, painted 1,000 chairs, painted jungle gyms, attended a convention, and lots more. What else would you expect of such a quiet, dignified, service-minded group of young people. Q 1 if - mx ,Vw . A-yi a fire as S i i i ,Q ' fi? ,i , M. K N W 5 9' If LL g , Q J :nf K t ,JIALI 1. Well it may seem like we're a bunch of crazy mixed up little girls, I wonder if it's because we yell and scream alot, talk, talk, talk and play, play. play. fThrough the help of dear Gale.J But all, in all, one for one, and one for all, we're the best of friends, and although the future may be a Mystic Illusion - in out hearts, we'l1 always be a special bunch of friends. Oh yeah! P.S. without our super-duper advisiors, we would have never made it through these years. We think they're beautiful and we love them. To begin with, working with fellow classmen in the carnival booth selling hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks was a fun and tmforgettable experience . Next, having competed in the Arthur Award competition and surprising the upper-classmen with our sneak attack then victory to follow was one of our highlights. After a rest, it was back to work for the Christmas Tree decora- tion contest. First, by planning, then preparing and finally put- ting up the ornaments, which led us to victory again. Our candy sale, which was the fund raising drive, really helped the Freshman account . What about Mayfair? Having fun all day with no work and enjoying the May Day Program. And fi-nally our Freshman Ban- quet was already here. That was really a night to remember. Getting all dressed up and having a lot of fun at Sea Life Park. These activities were a part of our Freshman year that have passed, but will not be forgotten. We learned how working as a team usually leads to victory. Also while working on various projects, we met and kept new friends. THE INSEPARABLE CLASS OF 1980 has gone through just a part of the experiences gained at Waipahu High. fx 5 ruth Linda Nomura Secretary Mr . This year was a very hectic one for the class of '79. We displayed our effort to win, and our sportsmanship when defeated . First on the list is the carnival. Our profits came from selling corn on the cob. In fact, everywhere we looked, we saw com on the cobs! But this carnival sale surely added a delicious Big Bite to our treas- ury and o11r dunking booth was a splash! Homecoming '76. Staying out at all hours of the night! Putting on the last finishing touches on our I Quad decoration, and patching up the newly found holes in our float. Although, we did not do as well as we did last year, this showed us that we should stick together not only as a class, but as a united team! Remember the Christmas Tree Contest? Coming to school at 6:30, half asleep, using toothpicks to hold up our eyelids. Then after all that hard work - was it really worth it? Of course! Not giving up is what life is all about. Then this was our second year to attend W.H.S.'s Winter Ball. It was just as memorable as the first one was for those who did attend. If ever we could push back the hands of time, these are the special times we wish we could relive. Then the night of the March of Dimes - going door to door, asking for donations and later getting together, counting up the money, wishing we could have made more for this worthy cause . Next on the agenda, was the candy sale. Oh, the Cavities! Although it was fun, pushing the sales so that the class would have some Sweet Extra money. Class Day was a great one! Listening to the band, everybody having a good time. These are the fond memories which we later can look back on. Then there was Mayfair. Working in our own home- made booths. Passing pizzas left and right to the people everywhere. Asking yourself Will this ever end? Well, Waipahu High don't worry! The Super Fine Class of '79 will return with more eagerness and willingness to win! ! ! Mr . When we got our shiny new rings, we could showed the world that we were finally Juniors. And proud juniors were we in Homecoming 1976 our homecoming float placing second. Remember when we had so much fun preparing the chicken for our huli-huli chicken sale - umm finger lickin' good! This year, the 1978 Conspiracy activities were born, filled with fun for us all. Xmas caroling with a Far - Out Christmas tree filled the holidays. Dances, skits, and May Fair malts were all part of our school lives. Then, the highlight of the year . . . . The Class of '78's Junior Prom, You and I , held on April 16, 1977, at the Hawaiian Regent Ballroon. It was a night filled with beautiful memories to be cherished by all who attended. Yes, it has been a year - a tiring rewarding, frustrating, losing and winning year - but a time in our lives to be remem- ber always . if at n, .lf V Stephen Nakano Advisor Gina Ishikawa Darren Sakuma Secretary Treasurer , C 5. The years 77 , good years for many, were great years for the mighty class of 1977. For these were our golden high school years: years filled with the joy and pain of growing up, both individually and as a class. As we open our scrapbook of memo- ries, we recall the many things that made our four years in high school so special . . . Our freshman year was one of excitement and adventure for us: close to 600 fresh, inexperienced youngsters encountering for the first time the mysteries of high school. The Arthur Award was something we didn't quite understand yet, but we cheered and painted our way through a gala Homecoming '73 . . . Sophomore year found us a little older and a lot wiser in the Way of the World. It also found us with a new motto that was to permanently bind us together as the United Class of 77. Yes, that blue and yellow banner waved triumphantly over our cheering class as we captured the coveted Arthur as part of the Homecoming '74 celebration. What incred- ible joy we felt as the words came over the loudspeaker announcing our victory . . . Our third year in high school came soon, bringing with it another Homecoming. This year, however, we were busy peddling Huli-Huli Chicken to make our graduation at the NBC possible. Although Arthur escaped us, we were tired and happy after the chicken sales were totaled, for our goal had been reached. Our junior year also had a touch of magic, in the form of our first prom. Walk Close To Me, our Junior Prom, was a success in every way . . . Our last year in high school slipped by quickly as we prepared for graduation. Once again our United We Stand banner waved proudly over our class, as we stood united in spirit for our last Homecoming at WHS. Working together for a first-place tie in the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest made our win- ter complete. The months sped by, and soon our Senior Banquet and Commencement Ball were also beautiful memories, stored away forever in our minds. Graduation accessories came in, and we looked forward to THE day, June 8, 1977 , a day of good- byes and hellos . . . As we put away our treasure book of memories, we hear again our laughter echoing down the halls of Waipahu High, and feel again the joy that made these years with the United Class of 1977 so great!
