We live in a great and beautiful country. How long will it last is everyone's concern. The years that follow are crucial and they will determine whether or not we will remain a beautiful land or decay into an ugly polluted country. Take heed , Americans, the signs of decadence are beginning to reveal themselves. Let us do whatever we can to insure continued anniversay celebrations . The 1976 edition of the Ka Mea Ohi chose as its theme, America, the Beautiful, to commemorate the passing of two-hundred years of America's growth and achievement. As we celebrate this, our national bicentennial anniversary, let us be appreciative that we live in a beautiful country populated by beautiful people. Let us pledge ourselves to keep these United States of Amer- ica beautiful, not only for ourselves, but for the years and years to come . Let us start now and here , and hope that many others will follow. -V x' , 2v'x IJ L ,A 3 Lg X Wx N J whiff fH..,i,,1-., YJ VX 2 SL M' if . I7 Lie 4 f ' A f-94 U ff! It would seem most appro- priate, however, to congratulate and thank you for a most suc- cessful school year, one which I have enjoyed tremendously. I am extremely proud of all of you and I can sincerely say that Waipahu High is one of the best. I know that you all feel as I do. I I M . Shishido 29. Q if -H if Q--A553 A av-- A A pl Mr . Principal Registrar-Counselor Waipahu Community School PHILOSOPHY OF ADULT EDUCATION The foundation of adult education is the abiding faith in all people of all ages to be able to see themselves and their society more clearly , to think about their problems more critically and to cope with them more intelligently and creativelyg and that inherent in this faith is a strong belief in the efficacy of continuing life-long learning as a civilizing process. As our late President, Lyndon B. Johnson, exclaimed in his Education Message to Congress on June 12, 1965: Every person must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take . We want this, not only for his sake, but for the nation's sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our countryg not our military preparedness, for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peaceg not our productive economy, for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpowerg not our democratic system of govern- ment, for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant. r-,,',-,,,,, ,,,.nf Meditation in a different milieu Rapt attention engendered by deft instruction fr . ui ti, rf M L f, mf vu ZA: ' N.. df -W X ..,,, , A A 'M---In-. The Waipahu High School Chorus had a busy year spreading joyous sounds and catchful tunes under the direction of Mrs. Maile Ho. The Christmas Concert, Christmas Hit Parade, was presented to the school and community. Waipahu High Chorus was honored by being invited to sing at the State Capitol for the opening ceremonies of the Legislature. Then came the Spring Concert, A Bicentennial Salute to America with the theme: America on Parade. The final curtain fell for the busy Chorus at the Waipahu High School graduation exercise. The fine performances drew many praises from many people. The long hours of practice and rehearsals paid off in the expressions of the audience who were entertained. The officers and the members of the chorus should be commended for a great year and for the credit they have brought to Waipahu High. Mrs . ' Mr. Francis Claveria Head Coach 48 Mn' gtiflnfll Sparked by the determination of winning this year's Leeward Divisional Crown, the Waipahu Marau- ders just fell short of that dream. After playing one of the toughest schedules in the entire OIA League , the Marauders ended up a strong and respectable second . Displaying the quality of the spirit and fight to gain status, in every game the Marauders encountered, they fought well to give the opponents a tough battle. The 1975-'76 edition of the Waipahu Marauders consisted of eighteen seniors, seventeen juniors, five sophomores, and one freshman. This year's success can be attributed to team spirit and discipline, and to the stalwart defense of James Moody, Iourdan LaPuente, Tony Aguirre, and Manu Petaia. In offense, the Marauders were led by Lawrence Moody, Ben Apuna, Mike Sevaaetasi, and Greg Kim. Many others too numerous to mention did outstanding jobs. Next year things will be looking good as the Marauders push ahead for the coming season. This year has been a very good one for the Girls' Volleyball team. They have successfully completed the volleyball season undefeated. At the beginning of the volleyball season Waipahu was invited once again to Molokai for its Annual Vol- leyball Tournament. Waipahu once again captured lst place - consecutively for three years, and therefore keeping the perpetual trophy. With hard work and determination the girls always had confidence before each game. ln 1974, the team placed 4th in the State Championship after being defeated by the Farring- ton Governors. This year Waipahu High School Girls Varsity Volleyball Team had come back and gone all the way. This team has been the only team in Wai- pahu High School history to capture a State title. Quoting the OIA director, Mr. Bill Smythe, And it had to be the girls to do it, points out the significance of their work successfully done. Waipahu have been the first Western team to capture the OIA Title and the second to capture a State Title. The person to be recognized, and the Boss behind the girls, is Coach Rudy Sambrano. He pushed these women and helped everyone of them to develop their skills, and saw to it that they were in good body condition. Angie Andrade and Mary Ancheta, the co-captains, should also be commended for their excellent performances and for doing a job in keeping the athletes together. Excellent performances from Belinda Sibonga, Dawn Agbayani, Josie Kauhane, Jeanette Benauro, Nadine Awana, and Georgene Montgomery kept the girls on their winning ways. V t President me Preslden Secretary Cycas Q6 , P As our first year of high school comes to an end we will remember and treasure many things. We have accomplished lots in one year of high school! Remember the beginning of school not knowing what's happening and as the days go by we learned more and more? We have experienced so many new ways of doing things. Homecoming '75! ! Our first year of that . . . We learned the meaning of teamwork. Staying out til 9:30 at night finishing our Marauder float. Getting all tickled about the Arthur Competition showing our spirit and finding out who won the I-Quad decora- tions! Getting all excited the night before . Didn't we surprise the upper classmen by coming in second! We rested a couple of weekends and then came the carnival. The Fabulous Freshmen put a lot of effort working in the booths selling hamburgers and hot dogs , and having a grand time . How about the Christmas Tree Contest? Remember coming to school at 6:30 A.M. half sleeping to decorate the tree? And winning third place for our Freshman decorations! Starting out the new year 419765 with the New Year's Ball was a night to remember. Our first evening out with a date! Remember the soft glowing candle and the slow music playing in the cool evening night? Wow! How about getting cozy on the seats of the Sheraton? January 2'7 was the night for the March of Dimes . . . Meeting at Honowai Elementary School to get organized . . . Going door to door asking for donations went for a good cause. Our candy sale started January 26 and ended Feb. 20th. Calories, calories, calories! lt was fun pushing the sales so the class could get some extra money. Class Day was a day when the Freshmen got together with the Sophomores and had a dance. The theme was Pieces of April It was a righteous night to remember. Then there was Mayfair. Working in small booths and having fun! Enjoyed the May Day court and all the fun of the day. Missed one whole day of work. Remember the band that played? And finally the banquet. Our very own BANQUET! at the Pagoda International Ballroom. lt was beautiful. This was a night when we all got together for one final activity as freshmen. The food and the band were just supa. This ended our first year at Waipahu High. We learned many things and made many new friends. We had lots and lots of fun. As the years go on we will have more fun and meet more and exciting people. We are still learning things and we have a whole new horizon in the future. Remember that we've only begun . . . and who knows what exciting things and years are ahead of us, the fabulous and funky Class of 'I9. We will treasure all the wonderful memories of our FRESHMAN YEAR! We displayed the spirit and togetherness of a great class. We also suffered defeat during homecoming and Christmas decoration, but this only brought us closer together. We showed our spirit during pep rallies and assemblies. We also enjoyed doing skits, participating in games, and being a fantastic audience. And we weren't to be out done at dances having fun during the times of the New Years Ball, SG dances and class day dance. We also had a number of service projects, which included: Trick- or-Treating for UNICEF, a canned goods drive, Christmas caroling and also a walk for mankind. We also got to know the trade of a salesman selling carnival tickets and candy. During Mayfair the Class of '78 also sold malts and pastries. I think our righteous year can only summed up by our homecoming cheer: As Might Marauders we'll spend our days We're super sophomores in many ways As Mighty Marauderas we unite As Super Sophomores we will fight! hifi Mr' Alan Himma Cami' Sama Ana Mr. Stephen Nakano Advisor Secretary Advisor - fe: Sri? This year our class has worked very hard, learned many valuable lessons and has weathered through the worst possible times. Beginning the year, everyone was caught by surprise when we discovered that we were to have an early Homecoming, October 4, 1975. Preparations were immediately made for our chicken sale which the lr. Class sponsored this year. The results of this sale was quite successful . Then we prepared for our Homecoming Pep Rally , our I-Quad Decorations, and Class Float. Needless to say , this took a great deal of work but it was well worth it, for we all have beautiful memories of Homecom- ing, 1975. Following Homecoming was the Christmas Tree Decorations which was also a lot of fun. Now we are in the midsts of th Candy sale, which is progressing nicely and which we hope will be a great success. However, the best part of the year has still not arrived. For the Class of '77's Jr. Prom, which will be held at the llikai Hotel is scheduled for April 10, 1976. This event will be highlight of our lr. year. It will truly be an unforgetable, beauti- ful night for the many who do attend. No matter what may happen the Class of '77 is one of the best classes ever to roam the campus of Waipahu High School. Regardless of the prizes a class may win, what truly matters is the spirit of the students. Their eagerness and willingness to keep the class unified is truly remarkable and is what really counts. Not knowing where to go , we walked around in a adage. But everything changed and so did we . During the next two years we were busy with fund-raising projects like the candy sale and our successful chicken sale. While working together, sharing with others, and growing together, we developed the closeness and unity necessary for an eventful senior year. This year, as in previous years, we participated wholeheartedly in many service projects - among them: the Blood Drive, campus clean-up, and food drive. WE DID IT! For the first and last time, we, the astounding, majestic, super-fantastic Class of '76, cheered our way to victory in the Arthur Award Competition. It brought great happiness and tears to the eyes of many of us. Indeed, it was a very special Homecoming! CARNIVAL TIME! Again we proudly participated by manning the S and S Saimin booth and the Fish Pond Booth. The Senior Banquet at Sea Life Park and the Senior Commencement Ball at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom hold many precious, never-to-be-forgotten memories. T Then, our graduation accessories arrived and we realized commencement was just around the fl .J corner. JUNE 3, 1976 . . . GWSUZM Every year in a little room in E building, there are a handful of nuts that put out the CANE TASSEL. We've got a lot of misfits in thereg a peacock lover, a correction N fluid freak, a Big Mac and we've also got other misfitsg Quiet diligent people who can write well and those who are very good typists. Unfortunately, we can't be too choosy, so wer're stuck with what we have. It takes long, hard hours of work to produce the paper and if you line your birdcages with the CANE TASSEL, be sure to read it first. Who knows, maybe there'll be some good stories someday! Until then, we'1l keep on trying. 'U-WY After one year working on the CANE TASSEL staff, one starts having nightmares about big walking typewriters that chase you with xacto knives while you're wading through an ocean of correction fluid. One also begins to hear consistent screams and demands for articles, headlines and pictures. And if the disease has really prog- ressed , one breaks out in a cold sweat and hands start to quiver. But when each issue comes out, no matter how bad it is, the staff feels a sense of accomplishment, because putting out a paper isn't as easy as you think.
