Attracted by these words we of the Ka Mea Ohi staff have worked to produce this year's annual. Here, with- in its pages are our efforts to portray school life as compared to the production of a play. The setting of this performance is the Waipahu High School campus, leading roles are enacted by the Seniors, support- ing roles are played by the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes, the whole play is produced by the faculty and administration, and is under the direction of the Student Government. It is hoped that our theme, The Theatre, will be carried out to you clearly and lnspmngly and that lt will help to instill in you the importance of proper attitudes and cooperation necessary to yield a suc cessful play We feel that this book to the Seniors especially will be a valuable reminder of the completion of their first mayor play in life and the in splratuon for many more yet to come ww 6? elk X A 5 5 do Q W .M EX ag!' m H I M, e, DEDICATION ,W sf A6 se iffy! Q The Ka Mea Ohi stat? proudly dedicates this yearbook to an outstanding Teacher of Waipahu High School - Miss Blanche Mayes. Miss Mayes came to Waipahu High in l945, and has been on the administra- tive staff serving as head of the English Department ever since. We feel that she has constantly and dilligently strived to up- hold and to instill within her students the cherished standards to which Waipahu High School is dedicated: TO THE GROWTH OF SOUND MINDS AND SOUND BODIES: TO CHARACTER BUILDING, SPORTSMAN- SHIP, AND FAIR PLAY, TO INDUSTRY AND THE WILL TO SUCCEED, TO FRIENDLINESS -THE SPIRIT OF ALOHA, TO THOUGHT- FUL CONCERN FOR THE COMMON GOOD, TO LOYALTY AND THE LOVE OF COUN- TRY, TO THE BOYS AND THE GIRLS OF TODAY, TO THE MEN AND THE WOMEN OF TOMORROW. We, the students, owe our utmost thanks and gratitude to Miss Blanche Mayes, a fine teacher, a wonderful person, and a loyal friend always. The school con- stitution was drafted the following year. From this infant beginning Waipahu has grown from an enrollment of 575 to its present status as rural Oahu's largest high school with approx- imately 1,500 students. The council, composed of homeroom repre- sentatives, provides a means for student expres- sion. The students coordinate the functions of the government by maintaining standing com- mittees. Realizing a need for experienced football players on the varsity team, a iunior varsity team was organized for the first time this year. Since fielding began late the selection of can- didates was a difficult problem. However, many boys showed great interest in the team and the season started with spirited enthus- iasm. The squad was under the firm guidance of Coach Teiji Uehara who was aided by Alex- ander Kimura. In their first tilt of the season the boys lost to Castle who chalked up a win- ning 19-13 victory. A closer contest against Kailua followed with the Kailuans winning 19- I4. In their final contest, the JV's made a gallant bid to turn the tables on Waialua but were defeated 40-33. Although the boys did lose all three games played they also gained valuable experience. A good turnout is expected next year and the returning participants can be expected to give tough competition. Lomalyne Brown assumed the duties of the editorship and was guided by her adviser Mrs. Bowman and present editor, Magdalena Ramos. Students look forward to the informative articles on school activities, personalities, sports, and interesting incidents each Tuesday. Special six-page issues are distributed during the Christmas season and for class editions. As a communicative organ the Cane Tassel has enioyed another successful, pro- ductive year. There is always bustling activity in the Cane Tassel room on Wednesday, the weekly deadline day. Painstaking work on pictures, layouts and copy, and printing on the part of the staFf has produced well-written and very interesting issues. Two newly acquired IBMs have helped to ease the work. Mrs. Bowman and editors confer on the layouts of the coming issue. After a year of adiustment and excitement behind them the sophomores emerged as a class with one tone and one character eagerly await- ing new responsibilities. Officers to guide them were elected in October. As one of their activ- ities a sports intramural series was held each week during activity period between the months of February and April. The boys chose to com- pete in basketball and the girls in volleyball. Each homeroom selected a team to represent them and these teams competed against each other. At the sophomore canteen held on March 7 in the pavilion after school, the sophomores gaily cavorted to the music of current hit records. The big event of the year was Class Day, celebrated by a picnic at Haleiwa with everyone enjoying the food and games. During the same week the sophomore edition of the Cane Tassel was distributed. The officers of the sophomore class have given their time and leadership ability and with the cooperation of the members of the class, have brought about a successful year of scholastic and social activities. ,g The Mutual Aid Committee works to bring cheer to the sick X , L.. fx, X ex f x x ,, Q. 1 t ,A f , s O . , l' 'V 1 ,l ., 'Y A' we '4' ' 4 's ff all it I lx t 3 V 1 4 in x C. a Anoba, June Naka- M 1 Castello Ruhna Catao Row 2 Yvonne Dnaz Lrnda Brand Prlscllla Rosemary Castnllo Patrncna Colm Shlrley Dumancas Loretta Conselva Ellzabeth Chung Row 3 Gabrlel Empron Fernando Corpuz Gary Chock Bert Enomoto Rnchard Cullen Fellno Cadanova Pedro Eltagonde 4 Raymond Duran Bruce Clay Glenn Enomoto Chrrstopher Cabanban Juan Bolosan Murray Castro Herman Ekau Harold Brom Ewart Bungo Robert Drana uw. Their resource- fulness and varied activities greatly helped to enliven the school year. Their first activity was the annual Jr.-Sr. Dance in January themed Fairy- land Fantasy. At an all school assembly on February I9 the Juniors skillfully presented the impressive Jr. Patriotic Assembly. An essay conf test on What America Means to Me was held in connection with this. An air of exhiliration prevailed in the early spring for the formal of the year, the Junior- Senior Promenade. The Ala Wai Clubhouse was once again the scene of this enchanting event on March 22. Earlier in March, colors of pink and blue were seen in abundance on the campus as the Juniors celebrated Class Day. On this day the class paper was distributed and students summoned to the school cafetorium for a period of entertainment. As the year neared its end the Class elected officers for the following year and held a final Canteen in the school cafetorium. at ara e, Jane Sato, Rosalind Soma. Row 3. Always striving for improve- ment they adopted resolutions early in the year by which to conduct themselves and which were successful because of the co-operation of the class. With experience of veterans, the Senior Class sponsored a smash hit, Liberty's Best Friend , the American Education Week play. In Decem- ber, White Christmas was the setting for the annual Senior-Junior Dance. Eileen Matsuzaki and her committee under- took the production of the hilarious farce comedy, The Cannibal Queen which was presented to the public in March by the entire class. The Senior Class fairly bustled with activ- ities during their last week in school with gifts to present, prophecies to read, and an- nuals to sign. Then came the grand finale to this act-Com- mencement Day. Leis, tears, and laughter will make this an unforgettable day. The seniors have attained much on this campus. With the curtain down for the first act of their lives, they leave Waipahu High School anticipating the next act-a successful place in the world. Where's the Christmas spirit, everyone? ' fain th .
