Members got together to plan and carry out the most successful Parents' Night ever to be held. A contest was held to see which homeroom had the most parents at- tending the affair, The prize was the privilege of going to lunch on the first bell for one quarter and room 21 won. ' Teachers are served refreshments, CURRICU LAR ENGLISH English,-one the most important sub- jects, is given to all students for four years. During the freshmen year they are taught the fundamentals of English gram- mar. Sophomores take up grammar and world literature, juniors study grammar and American literature: and seniors learn English literature along with gram- mar. Compositions, book reports, talks, and parliamentary procedure are also part of English. HISTORY History is a required subject for all stu- dents. The first year students study citizen- ship and government affairs. Sophomores take up World history which covers the story of civilization from Man's early be- ginnings to the present time, juniors study American history, the story of the United States, past and present. In the senior year, students investigate problems in American government. Research is an important part of social studies. Seniors display their project on Propaganda. fill!!! - i Now, this is the way to do it! SCIENCE Science is the study of physical and biological aspects of the world. The study of plants and animals, which also include the organs and functions of the human body, is Biology. Then there is Chemistry which deals with matter of the universe and the changes in its composition. The study of Physics deals with matter and energy. A solid foundation in fundamentals of science gives the students the necessary back- ground for future study. Newton's third law of motion. knows. Richard rn F .Q i' MATHEMATICS Each student must have one credit of math to graduate, for skill in mathematics is essential to all students. Subjects offered high school students to prepare them for different fields are algebra, geom- etry, trigonometry, and high school arithmetic. HL., n iii' fs. ...tl LIBRARY TRAINING The first year trainees sign the stu- dents' admit slips as they enter the li- brary and go back to their rooms. They charge out books, card them when they are returned, and place them on the shelves. Their other duties are varnish- ing new books, and taking care of maga- zines and newspapers, and filing the back issues. The second year trainees make out cards for the catalogue and file them, look for reference material, and find information for ordering library material. Top: Speed test coming up? Bottom: Accuracy counts, Patsy. COMMERCIAL The purpose of business education is to train students for commercial jobs. In high school, students are offered typing, shorthand, transcription, book- keeping, and general business courses. Although many of the students are not planning to enter the business field, it will be useful for them to take a course such as typing. -1, I Shellacking books is part of library work. OFFICE TRAINING l'H f'4i The girls who take Office Training learn to be office assistants, They are taught to file cards, answer phone calls, make absence and cafeteria lists, take care of correspondence, operate various machines, and type reports. This train- ing in high school will be a great help to the girls who plan to work in offices as a secretary or clerk. Left: The front office is a busy place. Right: Let's check our figures AGRICULTURE The purpose of the Agriculture pro- gram is to prepare the boys to become better farmers. The boys are busy learn- ing methods of farming in various ways and in operating machines. Some of the projects that the boys take up are rais- ing chickens, heifers, and swineg garden- ing: air layeringg and caring for plants in the greenhouse. The boys sell their products to earn some money. Weed-killing is a tedious but necessary job. Boys return to classroom for lecture, discussions. HOMEMAKING Girls in Homemaking learn to cook and sew. ln addition they take up child care, family relations, interior decorat- ing, and good grooming. Boys also take Homemaking and learn similar things. An interesting elective for boys is Senior Home Problems where they study all aspects of family living. f J.- Fi I- Making muffins in kitchen. Cleaning chickens is part of Ag work. PTC The Part-Time Cooperative Program is a cooperative venture between the plantation and the Department of Public Instruction. A selected group of students is given a training program in every de- partment of the plantation. Skills de- veloped are in carpentry, painting, plumb- ing, garage work, electric shop, irrigation and metal shop. The boys are also given leadership training in school. Boys can learn to sew. HM ll il ll all the hard work. - S P day's work. GENERAL METALS The purpose of General Metals is to further vocational interests of high school boys. The students are divided into groups which take up bench metal- work, sheet metalwork, drafting, weld- ing, art metalwork and machinery. A variety of useful and ornamental objects are made in the shops. Different types of furniture, cups, dust pans, jewelry, and soap holders are some examples, A lamp contest among the boys is held at the close of the year to recognize outstanding work in originality and creativity. Latin students seem confused! Top: The finished product is worth Bottom- Fixin doors is art of the WOO DWORK ln Woodwork boys learn the funda- mentals of building furniture. They gain experience by handling machines of dif- ferent kinds. They make many useful things such as, tables, bookshelves, and desks. As part of their work they also help the school by setting up the ticket booth for football games, fixing broken chairs, and performing' odd jobs. Pedro and Francis watch jerry make a hammer head with the sharper. LATIN Amo te! Does this sound tor- eign to you? Well, it's Latin. Latin is considered to be a dead language, but it helps students increase their vocab- ulary, for Latin is basic to the study of English. Both first and second year Latin are offered students. Arts 81 Crafts Arts Cr Crafts is an engrossing study to many students. Some of the things the stu- dents make are clay figures, leatherwork, shell designs, and beadwork. Fingerpainting and special projects such as original Christmas trees are also undertaken. Through working with their hands. students are able to develop a creative and imaginative mind. 1 Learning to draw more than a straight line. Physical Education Physical Education is considered one of X ,P New A 5' the best classes by many boys. This depart- ment has been active in different types of sports. Some of the activities taken up are touch football, tumbling, basketball, soccer, softball, track, and ping pong. Physical Edu- cation develops good sportsmanship, fellow- ship, and reliability among the boys. Top: Craft students learning to weave. Bottom: Making leis with Hawaiian seeds Mechanical Drawing The boys in the Mechanical Drawing class progress rapidly. Accuracy, neatness, and speed in drawing are stressed in this particular class. The course develops the power to think and the ability to visualize an object. Girls who expect to do interior decorating or designing should take Me- chanical Drawing for it will be of great help to them in putting mathematical skill to work in their planning. Students still walk the halls yes but their faces are straight and their laughter different. The iolly people have left their beloved Alma Mater beyond the cane fields and mountains some to seek greater knowledge in schooling others to become part of the business world. Each is radiatinga glow of warmth and understanding that makes his little world go round smoothly. This class has produced many promising individuals. We have enjoyed being part of Waipahu High School. Hurrying and scurry- ing about for newsworthy stories of teachers and students, the Cane Tassel staff work them- selves up to a feverish frenzy as Wednesday, of each week, approaches. A weekly Cane Tassel is distributed to the student body, informing them of the happen- ings on the WHS campus so that students are made aware of all activities. As a means of communication, it aims to link students with each other, binding them closer together. The printing of the Cane Tassel is done at the McKinley Print Shop. With Miss Arlene Kobashigawa and Miss Lillian Senaga as advisers, this club accomplished many goals. lt carried through many ac- tivities. some of which were a skating party, a pie sale spon- sored as a money making project, decorating a Christmas tree in the Waipahu branch library as a service project, and a Valentine Dance to promote fellowship. Two conferences were attended by tour members to gain experience and to learn to be better leaders. As a national Y-Teen project, the Waipahu Teensters distributed lollipops to several teachers of Waipahu High School who were honorary Y-Teen members for the day. For their service project, the members helped the Ewa Recreation Center wrap gifts, sew costumes, and type cards for the big community Christmas play. In March, as their money making project, they sold lau-laus. A moonlight picnic was enjoyed by all after the sale. The purposes of this club are to promote good citi- zenship and to gather together in good fellowship. The lncas sponsored a lau-lau' sale in February which was a successful undertaking. Two represen- tatives attended the Territorial Hi-Tri-Y Conference on Kauai. Some of the members also participated in the Model Legislature sponsored by the YMCA's of the Territory of Hawaii. Under the firm hand of our new coach, Mr. Robert lkehara, Waipahu took the championship by winning nine consecutive games with one set- back at the hands of the Knights of Castle high. The team went all out this year to take the champ- ionship which Waipahu has held for a number of years.
