WEAPONS LOADOUT - STG2 Fruin watches MK46 torpedoes come aboard at Weapons Station Charleston. WAINWRIGHT SAILS EARLY FOR MED '86 The rumors started quickly, sparked by the unusual activity out- side the Captain's Cabin, and fed with the information gleaned from contacts in Norfolk: the USS Jose- phus Daniels had suffered a major engineroom casualty. She would be unable to deploy to the Indian Ocean with the USS Forrestal in June. Someone had to replace her. Suspicion deepened to certainty rapidly. USS WAINWRIGHT was the next cruiser in line to go. She could be ready for deployment not at the beginning of August as planned, but at the beginning of June. The decision was painful to many. Long range plans were thrown into disarray. Leaves were cancelled. On the other hand, the deployment would be shorter, and would end before Christmas. HARPOONS TO GO, PLEASE - LTJG Adwell and FCCS Thomas give the safety brief prior to loading Harpoon missiles. STATION THE SEA AND ANCHOR DE- TAIL - Line handlers from Second, Fourth and GMM divisions man up. COMMENCIN G APPROACH - Wain- wright approaches USNS N eosho for re- fueling. WAINWRIGHT's crew spent a frantic four weeks getting ready. A massive hurry-up IMAV, an NTPI SCOPEHEAD - ENS Page has the SPS- 10 stare. Page rejoined Wainwright mid- way through the cruise. ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER- BM3 McWhorter signals the hovering helo to pull in yet another PAX transfer. 'K Yfggfgi-'ffl' X with only one N W A T in prepara- tion, and stores onload after stores onload were only a few of the many preparations made for the cruise. On 4 June at 0920, WAIN- WRIGHT got underway. Two days later, she rendezvoused with the USS Forrestal and the rest of the ships of the battle group for the tran- sit across the Atlantic. As the ships entered the Mediterranean, they re- ceived the news that they would stay in the Med. For the WAIN- WRIGHT this would be the eighth deployment to that sea. After a turnover with the outgo- ing battle group in Augusta Bay, Sic- ily, WAINWRIGHT sailed to Gaeta, Italy, a small resort town south of Rome. With the crews of the USS Sellers and USS Macdo- nough, WAINWRIGHT sailors toured Rome and the other Italian cities near Gaeta, as well as catching plenty of sun. After Gaeta came two weeks of underway time, including dual carri- er operations with the Forrestal and USS America. Then WAIN- WRIGHT and Forrestal arrived in Palma de Majorca, which many sail- ors likened to Nirvana. Ten days on the sun-drenched crowded beaches of Palma were fol- lowed by a fuel crunch and a quick transit to Naples, where WAIN- WRIGHT conducted an unschedu- led IMAV with the USS Vulcan.
