Huchting gave at the memorial service for STG3 Lundquist held on the flight deck on 15 Aug. As we assemble here today - in memory of Petty Officer Lundquist - we might be asking ourselves these questions: Why did one of our shipmates have to die? Why did an individual of such talent and enthusiasm for life have to pass away? Why did a good friend with so much potential have to leave us? I ha ve fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Perhaps the answer lies in the quotation from Timothy which is on the front of the memorial service pamphlet: The time for my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Each of us has only a limited amount of time to spend on earth. The limits of that time are not known to us. Thus, while we may ponder and think about the why of the question and while we may be bitter at whoever we feel has set a limit to our time on earth, there is nothing we can do to change that sit- uation . . . What we do now, you and I, is what is important. Lee can help us no longer. He has given all he can to gfrlfgimily, his shipmates and the GAETA - STG3 Lundquist and QM3 McCorkle emoy the sun on the sand in Gaeta, Italy. 2 left a very fine mark on the EE LUNDQUIST X Lee world. We must now build on that mark. That is what Lee would want. Now we must fight the fight, we must finish the race, we must keep the faith. LUNDQUIST - STG3 Lundquist walks aft from the bridge. WAINWRIGHT SAILS EARLY FOR MED '86 The rumors started quickly, sparked by the unusual activity out- side the Captain's Cabin, and fed with the information gleaned from contacts in Norfolk: the USS Jose- phus Daniels had suffered a major engineroom casualty. She would be unable to deploy to the Indian Ocean with the USS Forrestal in June. Someone had to replace her. Suspicion deepened to certainty rapidly. USS WAINWRIGHT was the next cruiser in line to go. She could be ready for deployment not at the beginning of August as planned, but at the beginning of June. The decision was painful to many. Long range plans were thrown into disarray. Leaves were cancelled. On the other hand, the deployment would be shorter, and would end before Christmas. On 4 June at 0920, WAIN- WRIGHT got underway. Two days later, she rendezvoused with the USS Forrestal and the rest of the ships of the battle group for the tran- sit across the Atlantic. As the ships entered the Mediterranean, they re- ceived the news that they would stay in the Med. For the WAIN- WRIGHT this would be the eighth deployment to that sea. After a turnover with the outgo- ing battle group in Augusta Bay, Sic- ily, WAINWRIGHT sailed to Gaeta, Italy, a small resort town south of Rome. With the crews of the USS Sellers and USS Macdo- nough, WAINWRIGHT sailors toured Rome and the other Italian cities near Gaeta, as well as catching plenty of sun. After Gaeta came two weeks of underway time, including dual carri- er operations with the Forrestal and USS America. Then WAIN- WRIGHT and Forrestal arrived in Palma de Majorca, which many sail- ors likened to Nirvana. Ten days on the sun-drenched crowded beaches of Palma were fol- lowed by a fuel crunch and a quick transit to Naples, where WAIN- WRIGHT conducted an unschedu- led IMAV with the USS Vulcan. The fuel crunch would continue for several weeks, during which time only the WAINWRIGHT and the FIRST LIBERTY PORT - Wainwright rounds the bend into Gaeta, The USS Mac- Donough and USS Sellers also visited the town. Forrestal saw much underway time. The two ships did so much steaming together, that Forrestal began re- ferring to the two ships as the battle pair. At the beginning of August, WAINWRIGHT traveled to Mar- seilles, where tragedy struck the ship. STG3 Douglas Lundquist drowned in the waters off the Mar- seilles seawall. A memorial service was held for him on 15 August. WAINWRIGHT left Mar- seilles to participate in Exercise Seawind with Egyptian forces. This exercise took WAINWRIGHT to the eastern Med. A planned port vis- it to Haifa was cancelled and a visit to the Sicilian resort town of Toar- mina was scheduled for late August and early September. In Toarmina, the first MTT team boarded WAINWRIGHT to prepare her for an out-chop OPPE. WAINWRIGHT left Naples to transit up the Italian coast to Genoa, Where she spent the weekend and picked up another MTT team. She left Genoa for the eastern Meditter- anean to participate in Exercise Dis- play Determination with southern Nato forces. This exercise took WAINWRIGHT to the south coast of Turkey and the farthest point east during her deployment. During this exercise, she received a visit from two British MP's, who were given a red carpet tour of the ship. From the eastern Med, WAIN- WRIGHT began the long trip home, stopping again in Palma de Majorca on 20 October.
