sa I l The Vocational Department prepares all freshmen and other int t d d farming, and home economics. eres e stu ents in elementary carpentry, engineering, To learn the parts and types of machinery, and to use them efficiently, the boys enrolled in woodshop make coffee tables, table lamps, and book ends. Making flower-pot molds and other things for personal use, the boys in metalshop to- gether with those in woodshop carry out actual lessons in building things. They also erect the stands needed for the annual Menehune Festival, and repair classroom chairs, tables, and cafeteria utensils that need attention. The students in me- chanical drawing class learn the fundamentals of drawing and printing and as they advance, they learn blueprinting. I th h . . . . n e ome economic classes all freshman girls learn cooking, sewing, good grooming first-aid and economical D U buying. They also learn to prepare a formal dinner and to set a table properly. Family problems is the most interesting subject studied in the senior home problem class. In the agriculture class the boys plant vegetables which they sell to the cafeteria for school lunches. This year for the first time, a part-time cooperative plan has been put into effect whereby ten junior boys during the first to the fourth periods work on the plantation in various departments then return to the campus to take the required sub- jects, English and social studies in the afternoon. With advisors Mr. Morinaga, Mr. Ogata, Mr, Kajihara, Mr. Kawate, Miss Ogasawara, and Mrs. Takanishi, the Vo- cational Department successfully aids in the training of better citizens for tomorrow, 31
