ri' Regular Library Visitors Kindergartners on excursion 5 The elementary division consists of three hundred twenty- three students and includes the kindergarten and grades one to six, Mrs. Esther Robinson, the Vice-principal, is administra- tor of this division with a faculty of five in the primary, and five in the upper elementary sections. The students are divided into groups to do their work. In the kindergarten and the first grades, children become ac- quainted and learn to work, play, rest and eat together. In grades l, 2 and 3, they learn to use the tools of learning--- language, reading, writing and arithmetic. In the fourth to the sixth grades, they learn the fundamentals of hygiene, geo- graphy, history, and other subjects. They work in their own school library, as well as in the Waimea Public Library, The elementary division decorates the cafeteria, and pre- sents programs on special occasions such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, American Education Week, and Easter. They unite with the high school students to celebrate May Day and to par- ticipate in the Declamatory and Book Week contests sponsored by the Better English and Library Committees. The alert and efficient members ofthe I. P. O. department sharehonors with the secondary division for their service. Throughout the year the students actively participate in the Junior Red Cross acti- vities of the island. Kindergarten play period

The objective ofthe kindergarten programis to give young children a feeling of security while away from home, and to help them achieve a gradual and happy adjustment to school life. To achieve this objective, the kindergarteners have their lunch served in their room instead of in the cafeteria. They go on excursions, and have a garden to work in. All parents are invited to visit the school as often as they wish to observe their children at work and play. Parent-tea- cher conferences take place after school hours to discuss the individual needs and problems of the children, Ourkindergartenis one of the first public Kindergartens ro be established on Kauai, OnSeptember 19, 1943, it began with an enrollment of seventy-four pupils supervised by one teacher with three assistants.
