The students are divided into groups to do their work. In the kindergarten and the first grades, children become ac- quainted and learn to work, play, rest and eat together. In grades l, 2 and 3, they learn to use the tools of learning--- language, reading, writing and arithmetic. In the fourth to the sixth grades, they learn the fundamentals of hygiene, geo- graphy, history, and other subjects. They work in their own school library, as well as in the Waimea Public Library, The elementary division decorates the cafeteria, and pre- sents programs on special occasions such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, American Education Week, and Easter. They unite with the high school students to celebrate May Day and to par- ticipate in the Declamatory and Book Week contests sponsored by the Better English and Library Committees. Throughout the year the students actively participate in the Junior Red Cross acti- vities of the island. Kindergarten play period The objective ofthe kindergarten programis to give young children a feeling of security while away from home, and to help them achieve a gradual and happy adjustment to school life. To achieve this objective, the kindergarteners have their lunch served in their room instead of in the cafeteria. They go on excursions, and have a garden to work in. All parents are invited to visit the school as often as they wish to observe their children at work and play. Parent-tea- cher conferences take place after school hours to discuss the individual needs and problems of the children, Ourkindergartenis one of the first public Kindergartens ro be established on Kauai, OnSeptember 19, 1943, it began with an enrollment of seventy-four pupils supervised by one teacher with three assistants. The subjects include: band, chorus, phys ed, health assistance, newswriting, yearbook production, library training, and drawing and painting. Because the yearbook and newswriting classes are recognized organizations on the campus, their work is covered in that section of Ka Menehune. Student librarians serve during class time and recesses. During the year, they receive elementary training in library techniques, process all reading materials-both periodicals and books-for both the high school and elementary school divi- sions. Their year's program also includes activities to foster love for books. In physicaleducation classes the mind as well as the body is trained. The major sports for the boys are football, base- ball, basketball, and uack. They learn and practice the fundamentals of these sports to develop fast thinking in making split second decisions, and also to be physically fit. The girls also do the same things except that they have a wider vari- ety of sports to play, such as volleyball, softball, prisonball, hockey, and tennis. They also learn first-aid in this class. The main purpose of the drawing and painting class is to stimulate interest in drawing and painting, and to give stu- dents a chance to practice and develop special ability. The class works with different mediums--water color, oil, char- coal, and pencil. Most of the work is done from stills set up in the room under a spot light, l'ne chorus classes are designed to instil in the students a love for the best in music, to give students an opportunity for self-expression, a background for future appreciation and expression in music, and to help students enjoy singing, The obJect1ves of the band class are to help students develop to their fullest capacity through music' to help develops' l a pleasurable attitude toward music through participating in various music activitiesg to acquaint students with all types of band musicg and to help develop music reading skill, The health assistants help Mrs. Morinaga to care for students who become ill in school. They arrange for students to go to the hospital when necessary or to leave school when their illness is serious, and to give first-aid to student's injuries which occur on the campus. The students give assistance to school programs of the various health agencies such as the Board of Health, Bureau of Sight Conservation, and Kauai Tuberculosis Association. l Mr. Suga's advanced band class rehearses for assembly Chorus class practices Christmas carols. .,-,,, , , 'E 'cz oo -4: . ORGANIZATIONS The great number of organizations that WHS has to offer to its students differs in nature to satisfy the interests and needs of all students registered in the various courses. Each organization is headed by a capable chairman and an efficient ad- visor. . The SCHOOL COUNCIL consisting of representatives of each committee, organization, and class meets on the second Monday of each month to discuss important matters that concern the student body. The SCHOOL COURT administers justice, and promotes proper respect for law and order among the students of the campus. Any student who abuses the rules of the WHS Constitution and By -laws is arrested and tried before this court which determines his guilt and provides proper punishment. The NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY has for its members those students who have maintained an average grade of B in their studies. Besides being outstanding scholars, the members must be of sane character and able leadership, The CAMPUS POLICE OFFICERS follow a schedule of duty in the mornings, at lunch periods, and during assemblies to conrroltraffic, noise and disorder on the campus. A unit of this departmentis the IUNIORPOLICE OFFICERS who direct traf- fic for the safety of students going to and from school every morning and afternoon along the highways in the vicinity of the school. The WAIMEA CHAPTER of the FUTURE HOMEMAKERS of AMERICA is an organization of girls whose purpose is to pro- mote creative achievement and to emphasize the beauty of a wholesome life. The HANS P. FAYE CHAPTER 36 of the FUTURE FARMERS of AMERICA consists of '78 members interested in develop- ing agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. ' The CHORUS and BAND provide appropriate music for student assemblies held throughout the year. The band especial- ly, has gained island-wide attention for its support of WHS athletic teams during the football season. Every other week the newswriting class published the CANYON ECHO, for the Waimea High student body while the year- book class publishes annually, KA MENEHUNE, the school's yearbook. Both the CANYON ECHO and KA MENEHUNE have received national recognition for outstanding accomplishments. The FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS of AMERICA, is organized by students interested in business administration. These organizations help the students today to build a better tomorrow for themselves as they put into actual practice the things they learn in the classroom, realizing fully that Knowledge Is Power . Our many tnanks also go to me admirfis::ation for its guidance and support in helping us to prepare for the future. We who are leaving have reached the end of a period in our lives---a challenging future awaits us. Let us use wisely the valuable knowledge and experience we have gained to meet the future with courage and determination. To those re- maining: the coming years will present many problems and responsibilities. Attack your problems, and assume your res- ponsibilities with diligence and intelligence. Our theme, Knowledge is Power , is an indisputable fact, but unless this power is used properly and for the better- ment of mankind, we cannot hope to progress. Let us pledge to use our knowledge well. As student body president, I wish to extend my sincerest thanks to the members of the student body and to the student council for their cooperation and devotion to the task of making this year a most successful one. All students in grades 7 to 10 are required to take physical education. Intramural competition is provided for physical education classes, which give train- ing and experience for interscholastic contests. The best of facilities and equipment has been secured for this department to provide further enjoyment of all sports and to prevent any occurence of mishaps. The Waimea Park is utilized for football, baseball, hockey and volley-ball while the Clem Gomes Gymnasium is used for basketball and prisonball, as well as for tumbling and modern dancing. All athletic games are controlled by the Athletic Committee, which schedules every game to be played whether it be inter-class or inter-scholastic. The major sports for the boys are football, baseball, basketball, and track under the direct supervision of Mr. Rich- ard Doi, boys' physical education director. The girls, under the direction of Miss Barbara Bidwell, girls' physical education director, also follow a sports pro- gram which includes tennis and archery. 65 GB P Coach R. Doi f 412 Ass't. M. At least two hours a day after school the boys dedicate to a gruel- ing system of warming up, learning, and perfecting new plays, and for inter-team scrimmage to strengthen defensive and offensive teamwork, The daily practice session had its results in the vast improvement of their playing talent. Coach Ikehara applied personal experience and extensive background to mold and wield a well-coordinated, well-trained team to threaten the title for the season. The Menehunes suffered two defeats in the first round of play but returned in the se- cond round with a surprising reserve of high spirits to win all of their games. Emerging as title champs of the second round, the Menehunes were again victorious at the outcome of the play-off game which was slated to decide the island champions.
