K E I ff ELEM EN TARY Each year, children enroll in the kindergarten of Waimea High and Elementary School, where, they first learn the fundamentals of paving their way to the future. As they progress from grade to grade, they familiarize themselves with situations and they learn to cope with them not only as individuals but as a group. The students are divided into groups for sys - tematic order in doing their work. In the kindergar- ten and the first grades, children learn school routine which, for them, includes periods for working, play - ing, resting and eating. As first to third graders they learn to use the tools of learning- -language, reading , writing and arithmetic. In the fourth to sixth grades , they gain basic knowledge of hygiene, geography, histor and other materials. They spend one day a month at the Waimea Public Library besides doing work in their own school library. Wholesome recreation on a sliding board l Q IVISION Asapart of their program of building for the uture, the Elementary students learn to be of help o the schoolby decorating the cafeteria, presenting pecialptograms on such occasions as Thanksgiving , Zhristmas, American Education Week, and Easter. Together with the high school students, they take tart in celebrating May Day, Aloha Week and par- icipate in the Declamatory and Book Week contest ponsored by the Library Committee, They share ecognition honors for J. P. O. service with the secon- ary division during a special assembly. These children throughout the year make ex- ellent use of their privileges to capitalize on their bilities and to exercise cooperation with others. Dear fellow students, The past school year has revealed itself to be a very fruitful and prosperous one in every aspect. The achievments that wehave observed have been due mainly through the effort and cooperation of the entire student body working as a single unit. Their unity of determi - nation and enthusiasm has been the principal asset in our various activities. To those remaining, the burden of responsibility for tomorrow's tasks lies upon their shoulders. To them, I give my assurance that with the cooperation and zeal of every individual in carrying his share of the load of responsibility, the outcome will be another successful school year. As student body president, I wish to extend my hearty thanks to the administration for its support, and to the student council and its advisors, Mrs. Kawahara and Mr. Tsuchiya, for their guidance and understanding in making this year such a successful one. Sincerely yours, I Sei 'ext Vis RE: g. ls? Q. One, two, three, four, one, two ----- shouted Captain Yoshiaki Matsuda as he opened the football season for the members of the Waimea High and Elementary School Gridiron squad with a set of calisthenical drills, with a turnout of some fifty boys on that first day of practice in late August, Coach Richard Doi started with building his first football team as head mentor of the Waimea Menehunes. His hopes of retaining the K. I. F. Championship were placed in such stars as: Captain Matsuda, Castle Naumu, Victor Yokoyama, Howard Hamasaki, Stanley Kua, George Nohara, Albert Oshiro and Fredrick Nagata, lr I tal Q sr Q Season Scoring Pre-season W.H.S. - 12 vs Maui - 13 W. The Menehune's gridiron roster showed a great majority of the boys being very young and having little or no experience. However, led by their hustling Captain Yoshiaki Matsuda and a few returning lettermen, these sons of Waimea fought to the last in every game, blocking and tackling to the best of their ability, regardless of the odds against them. Recognition and due honor have been bestowed on Richard Doi, who in serving his first year as head coach of the Waimea Menehunes, did a masterful job with his boys, despite their record of five losses and two victories. Credit should also be given to Ass't Coach Melvin Tsuchiya and to those men in the community, namely Harold Naumu, George Crowell, Sonny Kaohi and Mansfield Doi, who helped Coach Doi with the development of our team. The Menehunes lost both pre-season games, one by a narrow margin of one point to the heavier Maui Hi eleven and the other to Coach Bill Wise's McKinley Tigers who proved too strong for the Waimea lads. In theregular K. I. F, season opener the Red Raiders of Kauai Hi, capitalizing on three Waimea fumbles deep in scoring territory, went on to score their first triumph. In their next game the Menehunes ran all over the Kapaa Clippers, but in the second game with the Red Raiders, the Menehunes suffered defeat. In the season's finale Coach Doi's lads whipped the Kapaa Clippers for a 26 tcyl3 victory. The Thanksgiving game played for mwrine Fund saw our fighting Menehunes bow again to the Raiders. tm .Ima fmt Just t I 6 , W l t . , v -'Y . Under Coach Richard Doi the Waimea Hi Menehunes completed a fine but unsuccessful defense of their champion- ship of 1952. The team showed well and displayed hustle and talent. The Menehunes played two pre-season games. The first was against Lahainaluna of Maui who were the victors in a hard fought game, 33-35. In their second pre-season game, the Menehunes triumphed over St. Anthony of Maui by the closest margin of all scores, 32-31. The Menehunes opened the K. LF, season by trouncing Kauai Hi, 32-27 at the Clem Gomes Gym, They handily outscored Kapaa 51-37 in their second game but, in their third contest, the Menehunes were upset by the Red Raiders in a close game that ended 30-33. 'The firstround ended with the Menehunes and Red Raiders deadlocked for the first place. In the playoff game at the Raider's gym, the Menehunes dropped a close and exciting game to their foes. Waimea Hi opened the second round by defeating the Red Raiders 47-33, then lost two consecutive games. In the final game of the season, the Menehunes successfully swamped the Clippers 50-37. The hustling team was led by first stringers Steven Duarte, Edward Allianic, Andy Nii, Frederick Nagata, and Owen Kauahi.
