BOTTOM: Steve Carmer and Lynn McPeck received Honorable Mentions from the Scholastic Art Award contest. Success in ‘87 Success. This word has been common here at Wahoo in the last year. We used it to decribe teams, classes and individuals. Those who do succeed have two things in common: talent and work. Without one or the other, Wahoo’s success would have been limited. From sports, band, and other organizations come the overachievers. First to be mentioned, however, are those who strive for academic excellence. As Wahoo’s main focus, its students display their abilities well. These abilities carry over into the extracurricular activities. Leadership stems from these few in many ways. Their success is, in part, Wahoo’s success. “Fads in the Spotlight” ABOVE Pepe jeans and jackets were seen quite often on the guys and gals. Here are six bottoms recognize them? RIGHT Bracelets made of braided yarn, string, or thread were worn to bring good luck. Once they fell off you simply were, “dumb out of luck! 4 ABOVE Hair wear: Carrie and Lanette show off their stylish bows. Banana clips were also a big hit this year. RIGHT Shad and Shane were learning some great shop tips until someone distracted them by taking a picture! RIGHT Jeff studies the insides of a neuron during a zoology lab. s LEFT It takes effort, dedication, and will power to be a good student. The desire is inside of us all, somewhere. BELOW Mike wants to catch up on all the hip fads in the Rolling Stone magazine. BELOW RIGHT Sometimes they tried to teach us too much all at once and fizzled our brains out. That's the case with Barb, Kris, Jill, and Char at senior comp. Learning. The basics of a school day. All of the other activities were distracting, but to learn was why students forced themselves up each morning. Learning was very boring at times, but remember the thrill and fascination that was felt when something really did sink in? Sometimes learning proved to be exciting; it just took a little effort. Learning. The seniors are all done or have they just begun? Why, if learning was such a pain, would they want to go to school again and learn more? It must pay off. Somewhere down the road we all find out that learning is a quest for wisdom. The Quest for Wisdom 9 ABOVE Becky works hard on a painting of an old-fashioned water pump. Becky plans to attend art school- RIGHT Darcy paints another tine piece of artwork. BELOW Chris and Robert work on a mold for a gear shift. ABOVE Rod, Andrew, Jeff, Dean and Pat look over the model home they built in Architectural Drawing. This model won the contest for best home in the 10 class. Craftsmen Practice Skills Athletics, academics, and school activities are among the top achievements of many students, while many students with artistic skills go unnoticed. The two shop classes and art classes have made several outstanding artistic achievements with little recognition. Students work long, hard hours in class and outside of school to improve on their skills. Many of the students are enrolled in these special courses because they enjoy art and do it mainly as a hobby. Other students take the classes more seriously as they plan to pursue a career in the fine arts. LEFT Jeff puts the finishing touches on a project for home, a drafting table. ABOVE Steve is busy at work on one of his favorite hobbies. He is working on a picture from the basketball team to Mr. Anderson. 11 Steve won a Scholastic Art Award for one of his drawings. Pat jonas I will remember Cross Country and asking girls to dances — Confusement in classes because I didn’t understand. Jane Cook I will remember the school parking lot and the new trash cans. Si Ortega! What’s one thine: you’llreme Lynne McPeck I will remember my friends, Mrs. Hudson, and Homecoming because I was crowned queen. Kim Johnston I will remember all the thrilling times I had during sports events, and dancing in Neumann's parking lot. jg.'ulC Carol Cook I will remember when they changed the morning bulletin to second period, and Pizza Hut complimentary waters. Rhonda Semrad I will remember all the fun times we'vp had while we were “supposed” to be in class, and the excuses we made up to get out of them. Oh yea! Crawling out of Mrs. Hudson’s class on our hands and knees. nber most about highschool? Tracy Peterson I can’t say that there’s one thing I’ll remember most because so much has happened. One thing I will remember, is our Jr. Prom, because it was the first dance I had been to at our school where people were actually dancing and having a great time. Eric Lubker I will remember parties and decorating my locker — Roaming the halls and having teachers yell at me for causing trouble. Tracy Kelley I will remember the summer before my senior year, and coming back to school. I had to readjust to my friends, and they had to adjust to me. It was hard, but we finally did it. Bryn Tejral I will remember all the carefree times and the Homestead. Sandra Rogers I will remember the people. There are diverse and unique people in our school system. Laurie Fiala I will remember the teachers and their bad habits — Mr. Weyand licking magic markers and the huge puffs of smoke from the teachers’ lounge. Wahoo students, under the leadership of Joe Weyand, made their fourth consecutive trip to Washington D.C. through the Close Up program. The group consisted of three seniors (Tracy Kelley, Ann Maly, and Tracy Peterson) and eight juniors (Beth Brandt, Jason Bromm, Brian Carlson, Jane Evers, Kevin Jeppson, Mike Krumpus, Rhonda Swanson, and Scott Tingelhoff. During the week the students toured the city and listened to many speakers (including Nebraska’s two senators). Usually later the student would get together in workshops and discuss their days events. Some of the places the students experienced were the Lincoln, the Jefferson, and the Vietnam Memorials; the U.S. Capital, the White House, and the Islamic Center. The students also enjoyed seeing the play, “The Citizen Thomas Paine” at the Kennedy Center, and attending the dance at the end of the week. At the end of the week everyone was pretty much exhausted, but what they had experienced they will remember for a long time. ABOVE The Capitol was visited a lot on Capitol Hill day. 17 Prom “Imagine” If You Will Lanette Dvorak and Jim Wotipka were announced King and Queen of the Jr.-Sr. Prom on May 1. The banquet was held at the Presbyterian Church. After the meal, Junior Class President Brian Carlson announced the candidates. Superintendent Dick dock then presented his speech in which he placed various seniors in humorous classroom situations. The Prom Servers brought the seniors back for their twentieth-year reunion in their skit portraying what they imagined some graduates to be doing. The dance at the high school, themed “Imagine”, began at 8:30 p.m. The gym was decorated in blue, burgundy, and silver with a small fountain in the center of the dance floor. After the dance, many students attended the Post-Prom “Hawaiin Beach Party” held at the bowling alley. Bowling, card games, “Wheel of Fortune”, and Bingo were among some of the evening's activities. Auctions using play money were also a big event. The party came to a close with breakfast being served at 5:30 a.m. ABOVE Prom Servers, Row 1: Troy Glock, John Gilliam, Ryan Barry, Justin Chisholm, Rob Brigham. State Trophy for Mock Trial The members of the 1986 Mock Trial team had a very productive season this year, winning their district and bringing home a fourth place trophy from the state competition in Lincoln. The team started out the season with a loss to Malcolm. The Wahoo team then came back to defeat Lincoln East. On Saunders County Government Day, Wahoo defeated Wahoo Neumann at the Saunders County court house to become district champions. In the trial for regional champion, Waho lost to Osceola by one point. Osceola was then supposed to advance to state but could not because of team conflicts. The Wahoo Mock Trial team was then invited to take their place. The team had four trials at the state competition and came home with a fourth place trophy. Members of the 1986 Mock Trial team were as follows: Matt McDonald, Sandra Rogers, Tracy Kelley, Brett Richardson, Scott Childers, Jeff Ohnoutka, Rhonda Semrad, and Tracy Peterson. The team was coached by teacher Bev Hudson and attorney Curt Bromm. TOP The Mock Trial team awaits verdict at their first trial. LEFT Late night Mock Trial practice at WHS. “Good News” Despite conflicting schedules and a few minor setbacks which postponed the production for one week, the cast, crew, and directors were able to do a fine production of this year’s comedy-musical, “Good News”. From eight hour lock-in rehearsals in the beginning, to the final two hour show, “Good News”, was just that. Set in the 1920’s on the campus of Tait College, the cast did a fine job of hamming-it-up on the college circuit. Through Babe O’Days (Jane Cook) antics of pursuit of the search of her “true love” Bobby Randall (Steve Carmer) or “Beef” Saunders (John Gilliam) to the melo-dramaCEIove story between football star Tom Marlowe (Ryan Barry), his astronomy tutor Constance Lane (Carrie Collins) and her overbearing cousin Patricia Bingham (Connie Laudenback), the production showed twists of fate for the stars as well as comedic support from the rest of the cast. The rest of the cast included: Justin Chisholm, Tony Barnes and Mike Rezac as the three drunks; Charlotte Kraviec as Flo; Rhonda Semrad as Millie; Jim Pokorny as Pooch; Scott Childers as Coach; Brett Richardson as Prof. Kenyon; Rob Brigham as Sylvester; Darin Svoboda as Windy; Shane Zavodny as the Gate Keeper; and Beth Brandt, Sandra Rogers, Kim Johnston, Tracy Kelley, Tracy Peterson, Carol Cook, Lisa Nozicka, Laura Hoffman, Amy Tejral, DeEtte Pospisil, Barb Kaiser and Cindy Slemin as the Sorority girls. Thurber’s Carnival On March27thand30th the drama class directed by Connie Dillow, put on the third annual dinner theater. The play, “Thurber’s Carnival , was actually twelve smaller plays put together. .Two of the most popular plays were “Mr. Preble Trys to Get Rid of His Wife” and “Walter Mitty”. In “Preble” Mr. Preble, played by Randy Gerdts, wants to kill his wife, Lanette Dvorak, so he can run away with his secretary, Jill Smith. Mrs. Preble, knowing her husband wants to kill her, scares him out of it by pretending to want to kill him. This play brought in lots of laughs and the acting was wonderful. Walter Mitty” played by Gene Ridgely was a middle class man that daydreamed that he was a famous doctor, a famous pilot, and a famous military general. The play hit home to many people because everyone pretends to be something they aren’t. The play was a big success and most everyone fully enjoyed it. Once every four years the band takes a trip, this year the band is headed down to Florida to march in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Parade. They will also visit the famous Epcot Center. To afford to take this wonderful trip, the band had to do many fund raisers which included car washes, Shoot for Loot at basketball games, raffles, skin patch tests, and they even sold and made pizzas. The Warrior marching band had a successful season also. They marched at the State Fair, NSBA Contest, and Band Masters contest. An Excellent was received at both. Chorus started the year off by going to a conference chorus clinic at Arlington in November. After the clinic they gave a fall concert. One of the highlights of the year was an invitation to perform in the Omaha Symphony Association, which was to be held at the Ak-Sar-Ben coliseum unfortunately this was cancelled because of a strike by the Omaha Musicians Union. The Warriors finished the year with a record of six wins and only four losses and a trip to the state playoffs. This was the first time Wahoo utilized the “wishbone” offensive scheme; it was the first time Wahoo won its first three games; it was the first time Wahoo had won (in a long time) its homecoming game, and it was the very first time Wahoo Public sent a team to the “State Playoffs” in the school’s history. The first game of the year was a test of the wishbone attack, but as David City Aquinas soon learned, the triple option was devastating, as they ended up being beaten 20 to 0. In the second game, against Arlington, Wahoo’s wishbone got off to a late start, but finished strong, winning 36 to 0. Ashland became the third victim, for the hungry Warrior defense left the field with a 28 to 13 victory. The fourth game left the Warriors stunned as they fell to Bennington, 12-7. Next on the Warriors “hit list” was Raymond Central. Even in the water soaked field Wahoo took home another victory, 13-6. The Warriors lost a tough game to Valley, 14-7, losing QB Scott Tingelhoff for the season. Homecoming the Warriors took on Bellevue Christian. The Warriors reaped havoc and destruction as they won 44 to 16. Wahoo's next game was against a powerful Syracuse squad, but the Warriors left the field with a 13 to 0 victory. Wahoo then faltered and dropped the next game to Omaha Cathedral. The state playoffs was a great event, especially since the Warriors were going to play Wahoo Neumann. It was a very close game in all respects, but the great running of Neumann backs left the Warriors with the record of 0-1 against the crosstown rival, who won 14-6. Steve Carmer was picked by the Lincoln Journal as First Team ALL-STATE at the position of Defensive End, while Scott Tingelhoff received Honorable Mention. 46 BELOW Shawn digs for a first down. We all knew that learning should have been the top of our priorities, but was it ever? Kids always seemed to have an excuse for getting poor marks every once in a while at school. Other (more exciting) action was always going on. No one had time to concentrate on the books! Putting off assignments always caught up with us sooner or later when free time was spent in the dark room or library trying to meet those teachers’ deadlines. But on the weekends, the good times rolled at games and dances. Everyone ususally crowded to the games to cheer for the Warriors and Warriorettes, and then maybe to a sock hop afterwards. High school life always seemed to be busy. I’m sure we all made some great memories in those four years at good 'ol Wahoo High. Can you believe it! —,We’ve all seen that in practically every yearbook! Everyone out of high school always told us that these four years would fly by, but it was hard to believe until it happened right before our eyes. We have grown together as a class, family, friends, and now is our time to depart and live our own separate lives. The choices and decisions we have to make are tough ones, but as one phase of our life ends, a new one begins. Graduation day was filled with many different emotions for all of us. While some shed tears of joy, others shed tears of sadness. For it's our year — “1987”. Slavs Vitale Jl Smlth Suaan Lamburg Year Principal Ron Hulse of Goodbyes The 1986-1987 school year was a year filled with pride, great moments, and sad farewells. The year was one of the school’s most successful in many ways. The football team, basketball teams, boys golf team and wrestling teams are received plaques for district play, while the football and basketball teams entered the state playoffs. Academic teams entered and received recognition in Mock Trial, Problem Solving and Olympics of the Mind. But the year was also sad, as faculty members and administration said goodbye to “Charlie” Divis, Ron Hulse, “Coke Tillman and Joslyn Stromberg, all with our system for many years. RIGHT One of the fun learning experiences overthe years for Mr. Divis is the voluntary reading time. First grader Ryan Watts reads a story aloud. ABOVE Mr. Divis and Mrs. Reenie Syverson, his secretary of many years, look over student test Mr. Charles Divis scores. 35 Years of Kids Elementary Principal Charles Divis, who has spent most of his life around kids, will be retiring after the 1986-1987 school year. Born May 3, 1927, Mr. Divis was raised on a farm near Colon, Nebraska. He attended a country school, which no longer exists today. Mr. Divis attended Creighton University where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he received his Masters. His majors in college were foreign languages and education. Mr. Divis, a teacher for 35 years, had his first teaching job at Prague for one year. He taught high school English and Latin classes. He joined the Wahoo School system in 1954 as an eighth grade teacher. He taught all classes except for music. Mr. Divis and his wife, Shirley were married in 1960. He has three children, Mark and Greg, who graduated from UNL, and Ann, who is attending UNL. The fall of 1960 brought a change in Mr. Divis’ life. He became the principal of West Ward. The highlights of his teaching and principal career evolve around the kids. My close relationship with students is the highlight. I like kids.” Mr. Divis feels that for teachers to have a school career, where they interact with students, they have to like kids, or they, “shouldn’t have that job.” After retiring, Mr. Divis plans to travel, fish, catch up on some reading, and do a lot of “odds and ends.” Veteran Teachers, Principal Retire from System 100 Changing to all electric typewriters, the use of computers, and moving to a new school building arejustafew things Mrs. Jocelyn Stromberg has seen change in her 28 years as a teacher at Wahoo High School. Throughout most of Mrs. Stromberg's teaching years, she has taught business classes, but she did teach Jr.-Sr. English for nine years. She has also helped sponsor the sophomore and junior class, and she started FBLA five years ago. When she started the club, there were only 15 members, but it has now grown to 72. Teaching first grade can be quite a memorable experience. If you don’t think so, just ask Mrs. Tillman, whose been teaching at West Ward for 17 years. She says one of her most memorable happenings was when her class was studying plurals. She asked the kids if they knew what plurals were and one little kid said his mom, “wore them around her neck.” Mrs. Tillman says it’s little thing like this that she’s going to miss about teaching first grade. ABOVE Mr. Hulse explains life after high school. LEFT Mr. Ron Hulse After being principal at Wahoo High i School for 16 years, Mr. Hulse says it’s the relationship with the students and helping them in their careers that he’s going to miss the most. Before he was here, Mr. Hulse was a coach and classroom teacher in other school systems. He taught Social Studies, P.E. and Biological Sciences, and he coached football, basketball and track. Out from the protection and guidance of home, school and old friends. RIGHT Coach Watts coaches Kris through this shot. LEFT All this junk' it’s all vital for the output of the yearbook every year. I] BELOW Tracy P. waits patiently to enter the dark room. ■Sha ABOVE Great photos, “Yeah, Ann, you should huh Char?” see these! The eight girls of the Journalism II class shared a lot of hard but enjoyable work to produce a fine yearbook for Wahoo High. Deadlines had to be met, and decisions had to be made so the yearbook could be done on time and done right. Even more hard work was put on the girls after they lost their only male member to a mid-term graduation. It was a lot of fun after they all learned never to put off ‘til tomorrow what can be done today. The end of the quarter deadlines snuck up quick, but they never put the staff under. Mr. Watts let the class go free so they could get their things done, trusting their responsibility, and they didn’t let him down. They proved themselves capable of handling the pressure, the work, and the self-satisfaction that come from turning in a good layout. The 1986-87 yearbook staff captured all of the memories of the past year that could possibly fit into this small book. They put together a book filled with memories of the activities, the classes, and, of course, everybody’s friends. Looking through this book one year, five years, even ten years from now will bring back some good memories of some great times, thanks to the Journalism II yearbook staff. V •
