BELOW CENTER Books! Books! Books! Who needs ’em? LEARNING LEFT Mike. Tom. and Dan work on their shop project. BELOW Kristy and Lisa examine slides in Mr. Wright's physiology class. The year 1986 brought some new ideas and continued some old exciting and unexciting experiences. Thing back through the year and look at some of the things you’ll probably never do again. Physics and chemistry experiements weren’t always fun and exciting, but it sure beat lecturing. Most seniors won’t ever write a research paper with hundreds of note cards again. Remember all the math tests; if you couldn’t use your calculator, you flunked. Every Friday it never failed that you would have a vocabulary test in English. Physiology labs took at least four or five hours of your free time and then they were never quite right. Don't forget all those silly experiments in social science, you never quite knew why you were doing them. LEFT Laurie puts the computer to good use as she types an English report on the word processor. ABOVE A physics experiment performed by Mr. Ketner is witnessed by Scott. LEFT Mrs. Hudson gives some encouraging words to Tom and Dean as they show her their Senior Comp, research paper notecards. 3 RIGHT 1985-86 Yearbook Staff: Mike Gilliam, Chris Lehr, Tom Kunkle, Rachelle Horner, Jenny Tejral. Jody Hauschild, Stacy Motes, Kyle Gottschalk, Dean Biggerstaff, J.B. Ketner. BELOW Jenny, Dean and Jody lay out the copy for their layouts. Organization, Planning, Deadlines RIGHT Mr. Watts helps Tom and Jody sort out the negtives which survived the ‘‘Bermuda Drawer'' 6 LEFT Stacy performs the laborious task of making and developing prints. BELOW Members of the 1985-86 Yearbook Staff set up the cover photo for the yearbook at Joe Vculek's studio. Yearbook Staff Deadlines were very real for the 1985-86 yearbook staff — deadlines for layouts, deadlines for pictures and deadlines for captions and copy. The staff decided to give the yearbook a different look this year. Tool lines were added to the layouts, more creative designs were used and the cover for the '85-86 yearbook took on a different look as well. The staff found what they were looking for — a fresh look. They also questioned what it was they were trying to do. Was it to be an athletic journal, an academic record, a photo album? It was to be a time capsule, a way of recording what it was that we did during four very important years of our lives. And that is what the '85-'86 staff tried to assemble — words and pictures with a purpose. LEFT Tom makes a test print in the darkroom before printing a picture. FAR LEFT J.B. shoots pictures of a girls basketball game for his layout. 7 Hangin’ Out BELOW Members of the junior class turn a doorway into a convenient study area. Gina Lierman, Marnie O'Brien and Amy Tejral can still find ways to have fun. RIGHT You can always spot a freshman - they're the ones who actually study in the library. Here's Tony Barnes and Cliff Kreizel. 8 LEFT It's not an overdue book, really! Todd Malousek checks with Mrs. Hansson to make sure his library card is in order. BELOW Kristine Simonson - grin and bear it! BELOW LEFT Henrik Claussen proves it's never to early to start your tan -even if it's the day before Christmas vacation. BELOW RIGHT Ever get that hungry feeling before lunch? Lisa Nozicka, Jane Cook and Henrik Claussen find that a snack makes the day go faster. When everything is said and done, when the school year is over and the books put away, it isn't so much the classes or the grades you remember — it’s the people. What would you have done without your friends who woke you up when you dozed off in English, brought you back a fritter when they went on a doughnut run, or found your research paper for you when you lost it the day it was due? They're always there to help you, whether your problem is a broken heart or a rebellious computer disk. Without your friends to help you make it through the day, things would be pretty rough. Glory Days Wahoo Public students enjoyed a special year in 1985-86. Many students, more than we can show on this page, earned recognition beyond the normal classroom and activities. The honors went to those students who had 'special' talents, whether in art, music, sports, writing or academic excellence. These students developed their skills and talents through hard work and study; They are our special pride. ABOVE Pam Turnwall (right) was a late winner of a Regents Scholarship to UNO. Little Mary Shines The Wahoo High School 1985 musical, “Little Mary Sunshine , chronicled the trials and tribulations of its heroine, Mary Sunshine (Jenny Tejral), in her search for true love and mortgage money. Because of a lot of co-operation and hard work from the cast, crew and directors, the musical seemed to go more smoothly than past productions. A Sunday matinee, something new, attracted a large crowd and went well, despite a last minute replacement in the cast. The production was the first to use the Little Theatre’s new curtains, and featured the first bedroom scene in WHS musical history — even if the bedroom was full of innocent finishing school ladies clad in floor-length night gowns. Each play presented a brief character study, with each member of the drama class portraying at Least one of the forty-eight roles. Many students had to take on several important roles. Sheri Buckner, one of Mrs. Dillow’s former students, took over a part at the last minute. Putting on such a large production takes weeks of rehearsal, and finally, dress and makeup rehearsals. But there was more to the play than just the actors. Several brave students drove to Lincoln in the pouring rain to get props, and had to buy a tarp to keep them dry. The costume committee spent days ironing and hemming, publicity handed out flyers and put up posters, and several people took turns handling the complex light and sound arrangements. Students from outside the drama class helped with scene changes and waitressing, and the Headshed did hairstyles and makeupfreeofcharge. Wahoo’s Own “Monumental Experience” Wahoo students have made the journey to Washington D.C., for the third consecutive year. This year’s trip took along the largest number of Wahoo students ever. The Wahoo delegation consisted of three seniors (Anne Brandt, Tom Kunkle and Todd Malousek) and ten juniors (Carol Cook, Jane Cook, Lanette Dvorak, Laurie Fiala, Kim Johnston, Matt McDonald, Lisa Nozicka, Sandra Rogers and Jeff Ohnoutka). John Horsham was the sponsor for this unruly crowd. The Washington experience is one that is not soon forgotten. Nor are the friends you make and become very close to during your all-too-short weeks stay. Museums and monuments are strewn throughout the city. With steering committee member Val O'Brien handing out three thousand dollars to people as they walked in the door, what could be better? Most students immediately went downstairs to gamble away their play money at black jack, craps, roulette, and chuck-a-lug. Other students chose the more challenging game of Trivial Pursuit. Money made from these games could be used for more gambling or for an auction to be held later in the night. Upstairs, students enjoyed bowling at $10 a point, video games, and pool. Pop and Pizza Hut pizza were free and MTV. BELOW Joe gives his new black and white television a hug. was on all night on big screen TV. Highlights of the season included outstanding play by spikers Amy Tejral, DeEtte Pospisil and Missy Wotipka on the front line. It was an exceptional yearfor the setters as Kim Weiss, Amy Peterson and Kristy Teigen led the team. “Passing the ball and getting it set up was definitely their strongest point. We didn't win every game, but we set the ball up and that’s the most important thing at this level,” commented head coach Ahlquist. “It’ll help in the long run. The JV team, utilizing sixteen players posted a 1-9 record. “It was difficult to find six that could play well together because everyone was so close in ability,” said Ahlquist. The JV “shined” at times playing one game in which no one missed a serve. The JVs improved their skills immensely by the end of the season. The seniors helped everyone at one time or another making football seem a little bit easier. The first game faced the Warriors with a hardhitting Aquinas team that usually intimidates the Warriors in the pre-season. The Warriors came out strong and were victorious. In the next six games, the Warriors struggled to keep players on the field. Injuries occurred to people in key positions making everyone work harder on Friday night. A first double-overtime game against Arlington had everyone on the edge of theirseats. Afterthefinal gun had been sounded, the Warriors had been defeated. When Bellevue Christian faced the Warriors at their next to last game, the intensity was very high. Tom Kunkle's 112 pound state runner-up placing plus seven team members qualifying at the Disrict tournament for state were the most exciting moments of the 1986 wrestling year. The team often racked by injury and illness much of the year (sending only six wrestlers to the Conference meet), struggled most of the season in tournament action. The bright spot of the regular season were the duals, where the Warriors finished 2-1-1, losing to Waverly by one point, although winning six of the eight matches wrestled. The team had only three seniors, starting at times four freshmen and four sophomores. But at the season’s end, the young squad began to jell. The team won the Bergan Invitational, and rallied to a fifth place (of 15) teams finish at District, challenging the top teams all the way. A record tying seven man squad emerged from the tournament to travel to the state meet in Lincoln, where senior Tom Kunkle earned a second place finish in the finals. The squad did well at state, with five of the seven winning first round matches, giving the team fifth place after the round. Justin Chisholm, Shawn Abbott, Tom Kunkle and Randy Abbott all won at least two matches, all but Tom just missing a state medal. Sometimes it seemed that graduation would never come, like in the middle of that long research paper, or during the weeks of hard practices to make the finals. Sometimes we got sick of filling out college applications, and ACT forms, and job applications. Sometimes we woke up in the morning and wondered how we were ever going to make it through one more day of classes. We even managed to have fun, on Senior Skip trips and Pep Club bus rides, cruising after games and going on picnics. And you know, when we think about it, it seems like just yesterday we came to school in August and realized we were Seniors. And we made it. Somehow, we made it. Sophomore filled in some of the key positions in athletics and various clubs. A few used their talents in the musical and the play given by the drama class. An elite few were chosen for prom servers at the Jr.-Sr. banquet. The two brave officers were President Vice President Jim Pokorny, and Secretary Treasurer Gloria Sillivan. Freshmen This year’s freshman class was one of the largest with 54 students. The freshmen jumped right into the groove of high school. They participated in all of the sports, the musical, clubs, and they greatly increased the size of the band. With all of the extra-curricular activities and having to fulfill their academic requirements, the freshmen were kept quite busy. The class officers for the freshmen are: President - Troy Glock; Vice President - DeEtte Pospisil; Secretary - Maureen McDonald and Treasurer - Amy Peterson. Three Merit Scholarships were awarded to Seniors and national test scores remained high. The school’s employees continued their self-evaluation of teachers, administration and special classes. Work was done on the physical plant as well. Deterioration of the parking lot and roof called for work to be done. Extensive furbishing was done to the weight room with the help of community and club donations. 1985-86 was a year of excitement, development and challenge. Linda Ahlquist Art. B WM New newspaper editor Larry Fauss explains his philosophies to the Wahoo staff. Darlene Jordan and Val O'Brien Secretaries 101 Burl Graff and Kathryn Hansson End Over 70 Years of Combined Teaching, Coaching and Activities Upon ending 35 years of teaching, Mr. Burl Graff said, “After retiring I plan to pursue my hobbies, travel, and do a little part time farming.” Mr. Graff graduated from Shelby High School and attended college at York. He also attended many undergraduate classes at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Mr. Graff became a teacher after World War II because there were not enough farms for him to enter into that occupation. He began teaching at Silver Creek, Ne. in 1947, then taught at Cook, followed by Genoa and Plainview. He began teaching at Wahoo High in 1955. Mr. Graff has taught math, science and physics. He has coached most of the high school sports and enjoyed the satisfaction of being a coach. The high point of his coaching experience came in 1972 with the winning of the Class ‘B’ Boys' State Championship. “The greatest inspiration is the reward of watching people succeed in the classroom, said Mr. Graff. Mr. Graff’s family includes his wife Peg and his children, Franklin, Stephen, Greg and Anne. Mrs. Kathryn Hansson attended Benson High School in Omaha. At the age of 16 she began college and was graduated from Duchene College. There she majored in biology and received a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Hansson began teaching right after college at Benson High School. She married Mr. Wallace Hansson at the age of 23, and they later had two children. Mrs. Hansson had originally planned to study pre-med, but with the death of her father she became a teacher, which eventually led her to Wahoo High, ten years later, in the school year of 1958-59. She was hired as an English teacher, biology teacher and librarian. Now Mrs. Hansson plans to retire, and thinking back over the years she replied, “Plain, pure enjoyment has been my biggest inspiration.” After retiring from Wahoo High, Mrs. Hansson simply plans to “find another job”. 102 RIGHT Lollypops ABOVE Craig, the past or the future? The year is gone now, and this book can only show a small part of school life. Missing is probably the exhilaration of being asked by that special person to the Prom, the disappointment of failing a major test, the challenge of performing well on national achievement tests. But, hopefully this book will remind us of those special moments and never let us forget the work, the fun, the close friends and that elation when something new is learned. These were truly our “Glory Days”. IIT ill MARCEL1N WALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCELINE MISSOURI. U 8 A
