Some of the places that had many younger people working were Gas and Shop, Pizza Hut, Haven House, Gambles, Coast to Coast, and the Civic Center. With jobs like these, students could not only earn money, but also enjoy doing it. Then, of course, students found many ways to spend their money. 1) Doug Janecek makes a sale at Gas-N-Shop. 2) Ron Jelinek uses his skill to hang a broom at Coast to Coast. 3) Mary Jane makes sure shelves are stocked at Gas-N-Shop. 4) Corrie Wilcox demonstrates how to cut a pizza at Pizza Hut. 5) Russel Flessner takes time off for a quick ride at Gambles. 6 Lunch Seekers Find Diverse Offerings Having open campus lets the students at Wahoo High have a variety of food places to choose from for lunch. The choices consist of Gas-n-Shop, Pizza Hut, George's Bar, Tasti Treat, and Roger's. Some other places that students also visit are Fairview, Wig Warn and as a last resort, home. 1) Gerald, Patti, Loreen, and Bugsy enjoy a nice hot lunch at Pizza Hut - LASAGNA! 2) Mary Jane and Karen enjoy their hurger baskets from Tasti Treat. 3) Stacy is satisfying her caffeine fit. 4) Jill waits patiently for her Gas-n-Shop sandwich to cook. 1) Problem Solvers. To enter, Mr. Ketner had to fill out a lengthy resume and originate a project for the space shuttle. This was also the first year of the annual Zanuck award, given by the Zanuck family to top students with need. Only students from Wahoo Public and Wahoo Neumann are able to receive this award. Jr. Stacy Motes was given a scholarship to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, for a six-week workshop in poetry. Some of the highlights included visits to the Vietnam, Jefferson, and Lincoln Memorials, meetings with Nebraska's representatives, a day on Capitol Hill, and an evening out at the musical Oklahoma! A dance and banquet rounded out the week. The school board gave all eleven students half-scholarships. 11 I Am The Warrior '84 Homecoming Theme Spirit Week really got the athletes, pep club members, and faculty members pepped-up for Homecoming night this year. The girls showed their spirit by making Spirit Boxes, Carters, and wearing one of the athlete's jerseys. Other days consisted of 60's Day and Blue Gold Day. The Junior girls gave one of the best skits in the last few years. They made up a dance to the song Ghostbusters, but made up their own words and called it Terrierbusters. I am the Warrior was this year's Homecoming theme. Disappointingly, the Warriors lost to the Valley Terriers 6-0. The skit was presented by the sophomore prom servers. They gave different joke awards to various seniors in which they interpreted their personalities. The dance was held in the high school gym at 9:00 p.m. TEEZ provided the sound and entertainment. Blue and silver streamers hung from the ceil- ing, with stars giving the appearance of night. They were: Staci Miller, Brian Gilliland, Ann Hancock, Brian Lubker, Kris Johnston, Dave Pauli, Lisa Dvorak, and Joe Walker. 17 'Dog Patch' This year's musical 'Lil Abner was said to be a success by director John Lauber and the cast members. The cast was led by Suzi Latham and Rick Grasmick in the respective parts of Daisy Mae and 'Lil Abner. 'Lil Abner is a musical about Sadie Hawkins Day and a situation about our modern day society. 'Lil Abner took place in a town called Dogpatch' which was supposed to be blown up by an atomic bomb. But when it was discovered that Dogpatch had a historical sight, the town was saved. Although it's hard to cast a large play with a small enrollment, the crowd was pleased with the characterization of the members. The audience especially enjoyed the scene when 'Lil Abner announced his secret love for Daisy Mae and made her break her engagement to Earthquake (Jared Ketner). 18 1) C. Fujan, S. The cast of eleven players worked well together and put on a fine show. Directed by Mrs. Dillow, this comedy took place in an insane asylum. The characters varied from delightfully innocent to harsh and cruel. Ethel Savage, whom the story is about, was committed by her children for spending her 10 million dollar fortune in ways they thought absurd. The play reached its climax when Mrs. Savage revealed to her children, her doctor, and her friends in the asylum that her money had been hidden inside her teddy bear all along. Another first occurred in this production. Someone from the outside assisted Mrs. Dillow. This someone was Kerry Hall, who helped the entire cast and crew along with Mrs. Dillow in every aspect of the production. In short, the production of The Curious Savage in the arrangement of a dinner theater was a hit. The play was enjoyed by all who attended. Team Makes Fourth State Appearance Kyle Gottschalk's second place finish and Paul Smith's fourth place finish at the district meet at Fremont were the highlights of the 1984 Cross Country year. The team finished third by one point, which was enough to send them to the state meet in Kearney where they finished seventh over all. The team's most successful runners were Senior Paul Smith and Junior Kyle Gotts-chalk. Paul and Kyle finished close to each other in every race. Another runner that helped the team was foreign exchange student Peter Quiaoit, who also finished high in many races. Lon Sayers and Jared Ketner also ran varsity and also helped the team go to state. Paul Smith ran well all year, never finishing less than 14th and was as high as second in the regular season meets. FJe finished 19th at state. Kyle Cottschalk ran 13th for his lowest finish and second at districts for his best finish. At state, Kyle finished 16th. 44 1) Lon and fared fight for position. 2) The 1984 Cross Country Boys team. Rovy 1: Lon Sayers, Kyle Gotts-chalk, Jared Ketner, and Peter Quiaoit. However, in the middle of the season they proved their ability when they managed to pull off three consecutive victories over Spring-field Platteview, Bellevue Christian, and Valley. The leading servers for the season were Kris Johnston with 98% and three aces; Kris Braun with 88% and 19 aces; and Ann Hancock with 78% and 26 aces. The strong spikers who helped the team through the season were Kris Simonson with 85%, Jenny Tejral with 82%, and Kris Braun with 79%. Becky Abbas with 99% and Ann Hancock with 97% were the setting leaders through the whole season. 1) The guys cheer on the Lady Warriors as they enter through the spirit door. 2) Candace attempts a block during warm-ups. 3) Kristen gets in position to bump it back over. 4) Kris goes up to spike a perfect set from jenny. 5) I got it! calls Ann as she gets in position to return the serve. 6) The girls test out their knee-pads before the game. 7) The Lady Warriors from left to right: K. This year's J.V. was almost entirely made up of sophomores. Cindy Walla was the only freshman chosen to suit up with the team. Only one junior suited up with team all year, so the team was somewhat at a disadvantage against junior-laden teams. Becky Abbas led the team in setting with a 96%, followed by Jane Cook with 93%. Becky also led serving, making 45 out of 55 serves. The leader in spiking with 91% was Allyson Bern, with Lanette Dvorak and Lisa Nozicka close behind with 84% and 81% respectively. 48 serve receptions were completed by Lisa Nozicka, and Jane Cook had 37. Overall, the team raised most of their percentages from last year. 48 —— 1) The 1984-85 Reserve Volleyball Team. Row 1: Barb Kaiser, Lisa Noz-icka, |ane Cook, Lanette Dvorak, Anne Brandt. After an 0-3 start, the Warriors rebounded with two consecutive wins, with one coming over new conference foe Bennington, 15-14. The winning touchdown and two point conversion came with under three minutes remaining in the game. The win also halted a 16-game losing skid. The next win came over defending conference champions Raymond Central, 18-14. An 80-yard touchdown pass from Janecek to Pauli highlighted the game while the reception gave Pauli a school record for longest touchdown pass. The offense was led by senior quarterback Doug Janecek with 272 yards rushing and 501 yards passing, while the defense was led by senior linebacker Rick Grasmick with 107 tackles on the season. The co-captains for the season were Doug Janecek and Rick Grasmick. The team's special awards went to: Dave Pauli - MVP, Craig Nietfeld - offensive player, Rick Grasmick - best defensive player, Shawn Liliedahl - specialty player, Joe Walker - lineman. The Warriors placed two on the all-conference team, Dave Pauli and Rick Grasmick, and two on honorable mention, Doug Janecek and Russ Fless-ner. 53 J.V. Has Best Season Since '74 The Warrior J.V's had their best year since 1974 gaining five wins against one loss. Having to play Aquinas two times due to conflicts with another opponent, the J.V.'s suffered their only loss in the first meeting 14-0. They retaliated that loss by beating the Mon-archs in their next meeting 33-12. Other victories came over Valley, Arlington, Ashland, and Raymond Central. The Warriors were led on offense by freshman I-back Steve Carmer. Carmer gained 531 yards in total offense, with 520 of them coming from rushing. On defense the team was led by freshman linebacker Shawn Liliedahl. Shawn racked up 46 total tackles, 11 more than second place tackier Scott Tingelhoff. Liliedahl also finished second in rushing with 361 yards. Carmer's speed and Liliedahl's size also helped the J.V. specialty teams, which were the best in many years. Carmer led the team in return yards with a 22-yard average on kickoffs and 12-yard average on punts. 54 J.v. - SCOREBOARD - Wahoo 8 Valley Opp. 7 16 Arlington 6 0 D.C. Aquinas 14 18 Ashland 0 33 D.C. Laurie also led the team with 98 rebounds, followed by Char Kraviec with 66. Kim Johnston was second in scoring with 71. The team was coached by Wes Kramer. Wrestlers Regroup; Send Four To State The competitive season for the '84T55 wrestlers was not good, but some very encouraging aspects developed during the season. Half of the team's membership was made up of freshmen and sophomores, an explanation for the team's lower division finish in every tournament. The team wrestled well at the district tournament in Fort Calhoun, sending senior Dan Hoer; juniors, Tom Kunkle, Tom Svara; and freshman Shawn Abbott to the state tournament. Six merpbers of the reserve team finished the season with four losses or less, with Shawn Abbott's record at 11-1. Yutan ended the Warriors' hopes for a State berth with a three overtime victory in the district championship. Dave Pauli earned many honors in his senior season, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and being voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. We Celebrate The End, We Celebrate The Beginning i (
