Washington Trip A Big Success Wahoo High students had a new experience by participating in the close-up program at Washington, D.C. Ten students flew to Washington, D.C. for a week to learn about how the government works and what the politicians do. They went to seminars and workshops daily. At the seminars speakers talked about the judiciary system, military, civil rights, and they had a debate about national affairs. In Washington, D.C. they saw such sites as the Washington Monument, Pentagon, Supreme Court room, and the Smithsonian Institute. The close-up students met many senators and representatives, and they also met All-American Center Patric Ewing, who played basketball for Georgetown. The school board donated half of the money and the students paid half to get to go to Washington, D.C. Joe Weyand was the sponsor for this program. 5

Creativity Adds Character To School It is not uncommon to see students and faculty participating in a variety of extracurricular activities. They range from long hours of hard work to just plain enjoyment. Due to the number of people interested, problem solving had to be divided into two teams. Each team was given three practice problems dealing with futuristic problems, the problems were judged on many criteria; some of these being creativity, description, originality, planning, and how realistic and effective the solution was. These students attended three different clinics to help them in the process. The science and math fair, sponsored by ESU, was held at Wahoo High this year. Out of the nine Wahoo students that competed, Judy Rogers won 1st place in biochemistry, Dan Thompson won 1st place in the physics and math bowls and Jennie Evers placed 2nd in the physics bowl behind Thompson. Brian Ketner earned the opportunity to visit Yugoslavia and Italy, thanks to the Lincoln lournal-Star newspaper and Parade magazine, for two weeks in April. A total of 155 carriers from around the country were chosen, with only two being from Nebraska. He was selected on the basis of scholastic aptitude, community involvement, church activity, personal interview, and teacher recommendations. The annual faculty game was very exciting. Wahoo Neumann won in double overtime against the fighting Warriors. We had much enthusiasm with a single trumpet soloist, Bob Arp, and our very own cheerleaders. The students participated the best they have all year.
