Jim Swarts, Jeff Lehr, Lynn Borreson, Christy Carr, erbird In Memoriam James Donald Kolterman 1965-1983 The 1984 Thunderbird is dedicated to James Donald Kolterman by the yearbook staff and the class of 1984. Jim, known as Eggy, was actively involved at Wahoo High School. His prime interest was music. He enjoyed playing both the piano and the trombone. In his spare time, he composed many songs and lyrics. Jim also participated in chorus, swing choir, and other vocal music activities. Jim participated in sports and was highly interested in golf. This year, Jim would have been the leading golfer for the team. Jim will always be remembered in the hearts of his i classmates, friends, and members of our community. 1 1. The Supreme Court Room. 2. Ten students flew to Washington, D.C. for a week to learn about how the government works and what the politicians do. They went to seminars and workshops daily. At the seminars speakers talked about the judiciary system, military, civil rights, and they had a debate about national affairs. In Washington, D.C. they saw such sites as the Washington Monument, Pentagon, Supreme Court room, and the Smithsonian Institute. The close-up students met many senators and representatives, and they also met All-American Center Patric Ewing, who played basketball for Georgetown. The school board donated half of the money and the students paid half to get to go to Washington, D.C. Joe Weyand was the sponsor for this program. 5 1. Problem Solving. Row 1: P. Tomzek, J. Teacher cheerleaders show spirit during faculty game at Neumann. Eat your heart out, guys! Creativity Adds Character To School It is not uncommon to see students and faculty participating in a variety of extracurricular activities. They range from long hours of hard work to just plain enjoyment. Due to the number of people interested, problem solving had to be divided into two teams. Each team was given three practice problems dealing with futuristic problems, the problems were judged on many criteria; some of these being creativity, description, originality, planning, and how realistic and effective the solution was. These students attended three different clinics to help them in the process. The science and math fair, sponsored by ESU, was held at Wahoo High this year. Out of the nine Wahoo students that competed, Judy Rogers won 1st place in biochemistry, Dan Thompson won 1st place in the physics and math bowls and Jennie Evers placed 2nd in the physics bowl behind Thompson. Brian Ketner earned the opportunity to visit Yugoslavia and Italy, thanks to the Lincoln lournal-Star newspaper and Parade magazine, for two weeks in April. A total of 155 carriers from around the country were chosen, with only two being from Nebraska. He was selected on the basis of scholastic aptitude, community involvement, church activity, personal interview, and teacher recommendations. The annual faculty game was very exciting. Wahoo Neumann won in double overtime against the fighting Warriors. We had much enthusiasm with a single trumpet soloist, Bob Arp, and our very own cheerleaders. The students participated the best they have all year. 1. The construction crew working some of the long hours needed to make the props. 2. The firing squad taking aim on their next victim. 3. The play was presented the evenings of March 30-31 in the Wahoo High Little Theater. Some of the scenes, such as the courtroom, were difficult to perform because they were very emotional and tense, and many of the cast members were new to the stage. This production was different from past years because it was performed in an arena which made the audience a part of the scene. Some of the characters in The Crucible were Tituba (Florence Chalvin), Abigail Williams (Piper Tomczyk), John Proctor (Mark Simonson), Reverend John Hale (Jared Ketner), and Elizabeth Proctor (Marcia Lindgren). 19 '84 Prom Full of Magic The 1984 Jr.-Sr. Prom was held April 13 in the Wahoo High School gym. The banquet was held at the Presbyterian Church. King and Queen were Randy Koranda and Ann Lindley. The prom servers presented a skit that looked into a few of the seniors' futures. Superintendent Hunzeker gave his after-dinner speech and the candidates were announced by Ann Hancock. The candidates were Jenny Olson, Dan Thompson, Shelli Miller, Jerome Johnson, Susie Laudenback, Dave Lorenzen, Alysia Ferguson, and Mark Simonson. The entry to the dance floor was a trellis covered with flowers and doves. The ceiling was strung with pastel streamers, ranging in color from lilac, baby blue, pink, and mint green. A large pink and white gazebo was the center for the coronation. The background for the pictures was a bridge with blue and white angel hair underneath and pink and purple flowers around it and a starry night behind. Refreshments were served in a wishing well. The music was supplied by KFRX, the D.J. was Tracey Johnson. 1. They used a colored picture of a '56 T-Bird as a symbol of our yearbook and Movin' On was chosen as the annual's theme. The group visited a yearbook seminar in Omaha sponsored by Wals-worth Publishing Company. Another highlight this year was the visitation to the class by Larry Faust, a writer for the Omaha World-Herald. Journalism I did its usual production of the school newspaper. In addition, they put together a magazine with original pictures and stories written by the students. The newspaper staff tried to improve our school by creating the idea of a winter formal dance. They also won a poster contest designed to uplift school spirit. Pictures for photography layouts were taken at the Omaha Zoo and the State Capitol instead of the usual places. The portrait assignments had better and larger negatives because of the use of a large negative camera. Computers did wonders with the typing and printing of each story. Students were able to correct errors more easily, save stories for later reference, and insert or delete complete sentences and paragraphs. 1. Judy and Jim design a layout. 2. The annual Christmas party was a great success. Pinata breaking and a taco feast served with Mexican hot chocolate were all part of the gala festivities. In the spring the Spanish Club ate out at a Mexican restaurant after attending Alejandra Dondines Dancers of the Americas. The 1983-84 Spanish Club officers are: President, Jim Swartz; Vice-President, Kris Simonson; and Secre-tary Treasurer, Jennie Evers. The Art Club was actively involved in many activities this year. They visited the Sheldon Art Gallery, went to Peru State College for a one-day workshop, silk screened T-shirts for the Art Club members and visited the Imperial Advertising Agency. The Art Club raised money for these activities by holding their annual bake sale and raffling off an original oil painting. The club had two speakers Professor L' land 4 Sherwood from Peru Stat College who demonstrated water color techniques and Lila Reese who demonstrated oil painting. The 1983-84 Art Club officers are: President Jill Hudkins; Vice-president Susie Laudenback; and Secre-tary Treasurer, Stacy Miller. 24 I. Some of the members show off their pinatas. 2. One of the new projects was a Pride poster contest. This was designed to help boost school spirit, not only by making a poster, but also by seeing the posters displayed around the school. Another new thing was to show a movie on Christmas instead of having a game day. The movie Victory was shown. On Halloween and Christmas, all the Student Council members dressed up in costumes and went down to the elementary school to pass out treats. On Christmas, they also showed cartoons to the students. The Student Council also sponsored volleyball intramurals and discussed plans for displaying the senior boards and plaques that recognize achievement in academics and sports. Officers for the 1983-84 Student Council were: President - Jennie Evers, Vice-President - Lisa Dvorak, and Secretary - Tori Dillow. Sponsor was Dick Tingelhoff. FHA and FBLA Active in FHA, in its second year of existence, has been very active. In the beginning of the year, to welcome new members, the organization held a treasure hunt in the city park. To make money, FHA sold pocket calendars, held a grocery raffle, and joined with FBLA and held a Valentine's dance. For Christmas the FHA had a party and invited the members' parents and decorated cookies for them. The members also sponsored the can food project for the needy and gave cookies to the Blood Mobile. During parent-teacher conferences the FHA babysat for the parent's children. At the end of the year the newly elected officers attended state in Lincoln. This year's officers were: President, Ann Hancock; Vice President, Jodi Schultz; Secretary, Candace Prokesh; Treasurer, Jeanine Schultz; Reporter-Historian, Debbie Freeman. 1. FHA, Row 1: A. All through the season the Warriors couldn't get anything going. Part of the team's problems was that there was lack of participation in the summer weightlifting program. The Warriors had very few seniors out and that hurt, with the more seniors out it usually means you have more experience on the team. The Warriors ended on a half-way good note, they played two very good teams and the score could have gone either way. The Warriors put one on the All-Conference, Mark Sutton, and one on the All-Conference Honorably Mention, Mark Simmonson. 46 1. Brian leads the tackle on Arlington back. 2. Eddie led the team in rushing with 293 yards for the year. Chris Johnson's best game of the year was Raymond Central. He led the team with 115 yards passing. Chris had 207 yards passing throughout the year. Tom Svara led the team on defense with 35 tackles, followed by Dave Saibel with 31. “The inexperience and the lack of depth were the main weaknesses of the team,” said Coach Eddie. Girls Finish Best Since '78 The Lady Warriors entered the new five-team district with a 4-16 record and came out with the best showing since 1978. The girls were beaten in the finals by crosstown rival Wahoo Neumann, who went on to be state runners-up. The 5-17 Lady Warriors, coached by George Nicodemus, were led on offense by Deb Janecek and Ann Divis scoring 176 and 183 points respectively. The assists chart was led by Deb Janecek's 36 and sophomore Jenny Tejral's 35. The holiday tournament, possibly the Lady Warriors' most heartbreaking part of the season, proved to be too much for the young squad. In the opening game, the girls lost to Omaha St. Joseph in double overtime 66 to 63 and then lost the consolation game to Tekamah-Herman in overtime 41 to 48. The Lady Warriors proved they could get it together despite a 4 and 16 record to finish as district runners-up. Young Team's Season Improved The 1983-84 Lady Warriors finished with an impressive 5 and 7 record, much improved over last year's 3 and 8. Last year the team was mainly juniors and seniors, and this year, freshmen and sophomores. The Lady Warriors' biggest win was over the David City Scouts by 14 points, Jill Hudkins and Theresa Nissan led the team in scoring with 60 and 59 total points. The 1983-84 freshman Lady Warriors basketball team ended their season with a 4 and 4 record. The girls took two wins over Valley, and single wins over Wahoo Neumann and Ashland. The cold weather affected the performances of the team. “It caused us to lose three meets, commented Coach Graff. Snow and cold weather also cancelled two meets right at the beginning of the year. Blair meet was also scheduled on the same day as Districts; therefore, the team was unable to go to it. At Districts, Dean Biggerstaff placed 9th after a playoff against four others. Low scorers overall, averaging in the fifties were Dean Biggerstaff, Dave Seibel, and Chris Lehr. Dave Seibel was the only returning letterman this year. The team placed first in both the Wesleyan Inv. and the District meet, and took runner-up in the Mustang Inv., Peru Inv., and in the Conf. meet. Senior Jeff Lehr led the team in scoring. His personal best in the two-mile was a school record-setting time of 9:47, which gave him a first-place medal at the State Track Meet. It wasn't unusual to have two or three girls place in every event this year, leading to wins in all but two of the meets they attended. The girls depended on the leadership of Denise Blanke, Shelli Miller, Kris Braun, and Jenny Tejral to provide a point foundation on which the rest of the team could build. One of the highlights of the season was the 400-meter relay team of Shelli Miller, Tracy Kelly, Kris Braun, and jenny Tejral, who ran to a second-place finish at the State meet. The new system states that every member must earn at least 25 merits per sport season. These merits are earned by attending games, wearing uniforms, drawing posters, constructing spirit doors and making booster buttons. The Pep Club sponsored the traditional Homecoming Dance, Parents Night and Senior Night. To earn money for these projects the Pep Club held their annual bake sale and sold T-shirts. Sandra Rogers was the high seller for the project. The 1983-84 Pep Club officers include: President, Jenny Olson; Vice President, Lynn Boroson; and Secre-tary Treasuer Shelli Miller. A new organization was created this year, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). The purpose of FCA is to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. FCA was active in many projects. They invited many guest speakers to come and visi r saw 711ms, sang songs, ate out, and played intramural sports at some of the meetings. FCA also had a large cookout at Thompson's farm for their end-of-the-year meeting. FCA met every second and fourth Sunday of the month. As a class we've grown together as freshmen till we've finally become the next graduating class. We have within us many memories, good and bad, to take with us as we venture to higher achievements in our lives. Each year brought about new experiences that we will remember and always keep. We have so much to take with us and much more to look forward to as we step into our future. Our senior year will be remembered by all the activities, sporting events, dances, and other school-related functions we all attended. This year ten new computers were purchased, and placed in a computer center . The computers were available to all students and faculty. Also many adult programs were available. The third Wednesday of the month was used as an in-service day to show teachers ways of using computers in the classroom. The daily schedule was changed from a six-period class day to seven, which included a study hall. Lunch hour was shortened and did not count as a class period. The lunch menu was changed from a one-choice menu to a menu with four choices, including salad, sandwich bar, and two other daily menus. Many more students than before ate lunch after this change. A year-long project was teacher evaluation. Teachers were evaluated by parents at parent-teachers conference, by principals visiting classes, and students. Evaluation was done to help teachers become better educators. 1. Mr. Ron Hulse, Principal. Mr. Willard Hunzeker, Superintendent. 3. Mr. Clyde Childers, Assistant Principal. 4.
