Unleaded gas prices rose to $1.44 a gallon and then dropped as low as $1.18. HBO also had a change on life in Wahoo. 'General Hospital', 'Dynasty', and 'Magnum P.I.' were a few of the favorite T.V. shows watched by many. Some of the hit movies were 'Raiders Of The Lost Art', 'Porky's', 'Stripes', and 'Nice Dreams'. The new clothing style consisted of the preppy look, baggies, Nike tennis shoes, knickers, and head bands. Songs such as Urgent, We Got The Beat, Working For The Weekend, Centerfold, and Don't Stop Believing hit the top ten charts. 'Pac Man' was a favorite game that occupied many student's time. The closing of Safeway and the Wahoo theatre also affected Wahoo residents. Activities Small Annual Staff Has Hectic Year Due to a small staff, only three members the first semester, the 1982 annual staff had a very busy year. A lot of time was spent taking pictures, typing stories and drawing layouts. The 1982 Chieftain staff consisted of 20 students. They put out several outstanding papers during the year. They also thought of many interesting and funny stories such as food slapping and some bizzare New Year's resolutions. Much of the newspaper staff's work was done in cooperation with the Wahoo Newspaper Office. Advisor Doug Watts helped provide some much needed guidance. 6 I. They also planned a field trip to Omaha to dine at Michels for the traditional Mexican food. This years club officers were all seniors: President-Dave Chamberlin, Vice-President-Bruce Lindgren, Secretary-Deanna Gilliland and Jeff Hudkins-Treasurer. Art Club members also took a field trip. They watched glass blowing at Hoppe's. There was a week long show at Tri-Federal with an Artist reception the following day. They sponsored a raffle with several nice prizes including a getto blaster and albums. The Art Club President was Jeff Hud-kins. Scholastic Club members had a total of 34. A member must have maintained a 3.5 average for the second semester of last year and the first semester of this year to be eligible. 8 I. Scholastic Club. Row 1: B. Lindgren, J. Hansen, C. One of the most popular ideas was the Secret Santa ; people were assigned a person and gave clues to who they were. On the final day the Secret Santa was revealed. Other activities included; Costume Day , Sadie Hawkins Dance , Game Day , and selling flowers on Valentine's day. The activities weren't held only for money making, they were also held for student enjoyment and to get more people in the school involved. Student Council sponsor, Dick Tinglehoff felt that this years council was very cooperative. I. Participants of Costume Day 2. The Claus family poses for a picture before their journey 3. Although they had a lot of talent, the lack of accurate shooters stymied the offense. Ann Lindley and Kendra Tejral led the team in scoring. Jayne Wageman was the leading rebounder. Freshman Warriorettes worked on fundamentals and the season record was 2-7, however. Sharon Carlson and Lisa Dvorak, who scored most, improved as leaders. The warriors ended the season with a 4-6 record in duals. One of the problems the young wrestlers had was lack of experience. With only 1 senior, 3 juniors, and 6 sophomores to represent the varsity team, the grapplers had a rough but challenging season. Although the team had some problems, certain individuals had an outstanding season. Mark Sutton was the total points winner with 154 pts. Sr. Bill Lindley and soph. Gus Johnson were both pin winners with a total of 10 pins. Jr. Adolph Novotny was the total take down winner with 26. Gus Johnson Adolph Novotny were both 3rd at conference, while Mark Sutton took conference at Ashland. Five wrestlers placed at Districts, Gus J. and soph. Darrin B. placed 5th. After a depressing 9th place campaign at the Doane Inv., first year head coach Randy Shada and his girls marched on to a 2nd place bid at the conference meet, and continued on to the Class B-2 District Runners-up. This year's track team unveiled 7 state meet qualifiers; Karla Christensen in the 800, 1600, 3200; Dawn Jansen in the long jump, 400 meter relay; Deb Janecek in the discus; Denise Blanke in the shot put and Sharon Carlson, Shelia Crogan, and Nancy Hrdlicka in the 400 meter relay. The 1982 state track meet proved to be a very impressive showing for Karla Christensen. After placing 2nd in the 3200 on Friday afternoon, Karla continued on to a second place finish in both the 800 and 1600 on Saturday, the final day of the meet. 1. 1982 Girls Track Team (Bottom Row L to R) Student manager, T. Seven seniors competed for third year head coach Mark Wilson. Bill Hancock, Chris Thompson and Paul Smith won their events at the conference meet at Valley, with Hancock winning two events, the shot and the discus. With a powerful group of Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, prospects for another championship next year look good. Wahoo High boasts one of the most varied curriculums for any school in its class. Shop, Business Education, Advanced Science-Computer classes are unique academic activities; a Project Ideas program and Future Problem Solving Teams were added for students expressing gifted abilities. Wahoo High School also hosted a statewide seminar in which twenty students from towns all across Nebraska participated. 62 1. 1982 Problem Solving Team 2. Remembering the fun and laughter, The problems and the fears. And watching all our memories grow Throughout our high school years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we've met, Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we'd rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief, Where all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we'll start anew. mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCKLINE MISSOURI.
