1981 Thunderbird - Annual Staff ( Barb John Devin Tejral Beth Govaerts Robyn Welton Andy Ferguson Pat Hengen Bryce Cook Scott Carmer Kevin Simonson Scott Grasmick Advisor: Doug Watts 1 Activities play a large role in bringing people together and helping them become involved. All activities took dedication, responsibility, and hard work. The pep club planning pep rallies, the long play practices, the annual staff working on layouts, the anticipation of Pershing, the student council dances, all were something we can't forget. CITIES Small Annual,Newpaper Staffs Kept Busy Due to the small number of staff members, the 1981 annual staff kept very busy. Many hours were spent making layouts, taking pictures and writing stories. Because of the rising costs of producing the annual, many cuts were made to reduce the strain on the school's budget. The 1981 Chieftain staff was organized as a club instead of a class this year. Twelve students were involved in the Newspaper Club. This number of members resulted in the better coverage of school events. These twelve journalists were able to produce a new edition of the Chieftain monthly, consistently throughout the year. Much of the newspaper and annual staff's work was done in cooperation with the Wahoo Newspaper Office. Adviser Doug Watts also provided much needed guidance. 1. Kevin thinks hard as Devin awaits a reply in an interview. 2. Bryce and Mr. Watts discuss layout procedure. 3. Newspaper Club. Row 1: C. Sacks-chewsky, D. Rood, P. Hengen, S. Grasmick, K. P. Keeps Busy Throughout School Year The 1980-81 Council had a busy year. President Gwynne Gon-nerman, and Wahoo Highs new Student Counselor, Dick Tingel-hoff, held weekly meetings so that the members could bring their own ideas together and hopefully help bring bigger and better activities to the High School students. The Gong Show, Pig Kissing Contest, Sadie Hawkins Dance, and the Game Day in which games were thought up and students participated, were only a few of the many activities in which the Student Council put on in order to earn money for their use. 1) Students participate in Bubble Blowing Contest during Game Day 2) 1980-81 S.C. members, First Row: J. Clubs Lack Student Support Although the clubs at WHS lacked student support and involvement, they initiated many worthwhile and entertaining functions. The 1980-81 W-Club which was composed of all varsity athletics letter winners, sponsored the annual All Sports Banquet featuring guest speaker Moe Iba. In addition they also put on the prestigious W-Club Wrestling Tournament and provided concessions at many other athletic activities. This years W-Club officers were: Linda Little, President; Paul Lindgren, Vice President; Jeff Norenberg, Treasurer; Peggy Matson, Secretary; and Billy Hancock, Sgt. at Arms. A large Fine Arts Fair topped off the activities of this year's Art Club. All major Shop, Home Ec. and Art projects were put on display to the public. Also, this club put on an art show at West Ward and held their annual cake raffle. Art Club officers were: Lorie Dockweiler, President; Jeff Hudkins, Vice President; Benita John, Secretary; and Barb John, Treasurer. Spanish Club's major activity this year was their annual taco party. Most of the members attended and enjoyed themselves, except for a few who slightly overindulged on the sauce, (hot) 26 students in our school obtained and held a 3.5 grade average or better for the last semester of 1980 and the first semester of 1981 to become members of the Scholastic Club. 2 I. The two leads, Billy and Reno (played by Ray Stoupa and Joie Christensen) board the ship together. Following closely afterward are Sir Evelyn (Tim Govaerts) and Hope (Letti Torrens). The play begins like a soap opera, however, has a happy ending as Billy and Hope end up in love with Sir Evelyn and Reno also falling in love. You Can't Take It With You, a Pulitzer Prize award winning play by Hart and Koffman, was presented by Mrs. Dillow's speech and drama class in the spring. The theme of the play was built around the theory that life is a full time thing to. be enjoyed to the utmost. The play was unique in that the setting was an arena setting, with the audience completely surrounding the actors. 1. Joie dreams about Sir Evelyn. 2. The grand finale. 3. Beth interrogates Clark. 4. One, which received fifth place, was by Beth Govaerts and Linda Little for duet acting. Gwynne Gonnerman also made it to the state meet for informative speaking, but failed to place. In recent years, this season stands out as one of the best. Along with Gwynne's, Beth's, and Linda's, 'I's at Conference and District Tournaments, Peggy Matson received a 'I' at Conference and a 'll' at District for interpretation of poetry. Although no one else received a T at either Conference or District, no one received less than a two. People who received twos were Darryl Barry in informative speaking, Jay Izso for extemperaneous speaking, Tamra Dil-low for interpretation of poetry, Linda Little and Paul Lindgren for interpretation of prose, and Kevin Simonson, Bob Kennedy, Jeff Norenberg, Beth Govaerts, and Ray Stoupa, for interpretation of drama. 12 1. They competed in the Plattsmouth Marching Contest receiving a III and a rating of II at Pershing. The band traveled to Ashland for the Capital Conference Clinic. The Highlight of the year came when Wahoo attended the District Music Contest at Platte College in Columbus, in which they received a I . Also receiving a superior rating were Danny Thompson on the Alto Saxaphone and a flute duet consisting of Tamm'i Dillow and Peggy Matson. Chris Thompson was selected to play in the State Clinic Orchestra on tuba. The band also performed a fall concert, winter concert, and a spring concert, while also playing on graduation May 17th. I. A total of 75 students were enrolled in this year's class. A vocal concert was presented on October 21 to the public. The chorus department was also honored when they were able to hold the Capital Conference Clinic on November 18. Approximately three-hundred students were chosen from 5 other schools, including Wahoo, to participate in the all day event. Swing Choir was also busy during the year, participating in Capital Conference at David City and receiving a rating of one, and also going to the District Vocal Contest where they received a two. Pep Club Cheerleaders Purchase Uniforms What would any athletic team do without their Pep Club and cheerleaders cheering them on? Well ... for one thing, everyone not playing wouldn't have anything to look at, but that's not what these faithful girls are there for. They are there to cheer on the team and the 1980-81 Pep Club and cheerleaders fulfilled this expectation to the utmost. The Pep Club and cheerleaders all purchased new uniforms this year. The Pep Club's new uniforms consisted of blue overalls worn with a light yellow blouse. The total cost for each member to purchase this outfit was about $25.00. All the cheerleading squads also acquired very attractive new uniforms. The Pep Club sponsored many successful fund raisers this year ranging from the sale of Wahoo jerseys and shirts to a bake sale. Once in a while the athletes were treated to breakfasts prepared by the cheerleaders. The annual 'Spirit Week' was also a big success. I. Robyn, Beth, and Letti perform a skit during a pep rally. 2. Hard work, determination and long workouts were what it took for each athlete to participate in their particular sport. Not only did they work for themselves, but for the whole team. Even though there were losses with the wins, there was much gained. Lady Duffer's Season Best in Years The girl's golf team, coached by Burl Graff, ended the season with a satisfying four and one record for their duels and finished fourth and fifth at Plattsmouth and Ashland invitationals respectively. The team finished sixth at districts and senior Linda Little was a state qualifier. The varsity team was made up of Linda Little, junior Paula Nozicka, sophomore Sue Curda, and freshman Jenny Olsen. Reserves, all freshmen, were Ann Divis, Kendra Tejral, and Ann Lindley. 24 - 3 1. Paula, Sue, and Linda are delighted with the prospect of an exciting round of golf. (Ken Govaerts looks on) 2. The team got off to a slow start, losing its first six in a row, until a win against Arlington foreshadowed things to come. The Warriorettes finished impressively strong, defeating their last three regular season opponents, including fierce area rival Mead. Beating Mead and finishing fourth in Conference were the two biggest highlights of the year for the girls. Receiving individual honors were: Cheryl Koranda - All Capitol Conference, Wahoo All Area 1st Team; Dawn Jansen and Jami Smith - Wahoo All Area Honor Roll. 1. Dave Prokesh, Jeff Norenberg, and Bill Hancock were chosen as All Conference defensive players, while sophomore John Hansen was selected to the Honorable Mention squad as a halfback. The Warrior's averaged 230 yards per game and held their opponents to 220 yards a game defensively. Turnovers, coupled with injuries to many key players, caused the squad problems all year long. Jeff Norenberg, before being injured at David City, provided great emotional support and leadership, while Dave Prokesh remained consis-tant in his offensive performance throughout all nine games. tVAHlI Season Record n Seward 23 - Wahoo 12 1 Arlington 8 - Wahoo 24 1 Ashland 24 - Wahoo 16 David City Aq. 34 - Wahoo 7 Raymond Central 33 - Wahoo 15 Valley 7 - Wahoo 8 David City 0 - Wahoo 27 Syracuse 27 - Wahoo 7 Elkhorn 33 - Wahoo 14 | Record: 3-6 I. Second year coach Paul Eddie's club lacked in size and experience, but was blessed with an abundance of talent. They finished 7th at the Wahoo Invitational, 12th at the Waverly Invitational, 8th at the North Bend Invitational. The Warriors placed 2nd at the North Bend quadrangular meet and 1st at Ashland's. Wahoo also hosted a triangular and carded 2nd place. Along with these feats, the team finished 3rd in the Capital Conference meet. Individually Bobby Barry finished 2nd, followed by Jeff Lehr 7th. Senior Kirk Cottschalk was in third place with 100 yards remaining when he suffered a minor heat stroke and failed to finish the race. Wahooo finished 6th at the B-3 District meet held at Seward. Bob Barry placed 4th, which aualified him for state, but he crossed a marker and was later disqualified because he misinterpreted the course. Coach Wilson selected Bob Barry as his most valuable runner. Young Wrestlers Gain Experience The 1980-81 Warriors Wrestling squad led a rather disappointing season. The grapplers inexperience was the biggest factor. The varsity squad consisted of six freshman, four sophomores, one junior and three seniors. Seniors Dave Prokesh, Phil Richmond and Greg Divis led the squad to a 2-8 dual record, a first at the Bergan Invitational, a 4th at the York Invitational, and another 4th at the W-Club Tournament. The Warriors placed six wrestlers at the Conference Tournament, with Phil Richmond and Greg Divis each taking firsts. At the District Tournament four wrestlers placed: Mark Sutton and Greg Divis took 5th, Dave Prokesh took 3rd place, and Phil Richmond took a 2nd. Dave Prokesh and Phil Richmond both represented Wahoo at the State Wrestling Tournament. One school record was broken this year. That was Dave Prokesh beating his old take down record of 53. This year he had a total of 66 takedowns. Duals North Bend ..................... L Central ........................ L Gretna ......................... L Ashland ........................ A lack of height and ability attributed to the poor record. The squad managed to beat only Valley again this year. The Warriorettes were led by Tammi Gerdts, an Honorable Mention member of the All Conference Teams. She also led the Warriorettes in scoring and rebounding. Senior Lori Hajek added some offensive strength and junior Sherri Dvorak produced fine defensive performances. Scores Plattesmouth 46 .................. Wahoo 36 Ashland 67 ....................... The girls 1980-81 reserve basketball team ended their season with a 6-8 record. This year's team worked very hard and had teamwork and hustle throughout the season. The highlight of their season came in the game against Arlington. It was their toughest game of the season. Caroline Prohaska was the teams leading scorer throughout the season. Other leaders included Nancy Hrdlicka and Julie Christen for rebounding. The Freshman Warriorettes finished their season with an even 4-4 record. Deb Janacek led the team in scoring. She finished the season with 47 points in all. Teammate Ann Divis contributed to the statistics with 64 rebounds. Shelli Miller led the team steals with 30 for the season. Wahoo opened the season with a win against David City Public. Then after a loss to Waverly, came four straight wins against Loganview, Arlington, Yu-tan, and Elkhorn Mt. Michael. In following games, Wahoo finished second to Ashland in the conference tourney and lost in the first round of districts to Raymond Central to finish with a 10-10 final record. Individual honors went to Pat Hengen, honorable mention all-state, second team all-conference, and the team's leading scorer with 15.7 pts. per game average; Scott Carmer, first team all conference and high rebounder for the Warriors with 8.5 per game; and Bryce Cook, honorable mention allconference leading the team in assists with 84 and steals with 58. 44 T Wahoo 54 David City 42 60 Waverly 76 63 Loganview 62 51 Arlington 42 52 Yutan 39 •43 Mount Michael 41 51 Gretna 64 48 Norris 59 51 Plattview 44 51 Syracuse 53 40 Raymond Central 44 44 Raymond Central 41 54 Syracuse 47 50 Ashland 57 42 Ashland 47 48 Valley 56 37 Aquinas 56 58 Schuyler 55 61 Elkhorn 59 67 Raymond Central 67 'Overtime 1. Then disaster struck, when they lost their last 5 games, three in a row by one point. Junior Scott Grasmick led the Warriors in scoring with 12 pts. per game. Jim Jelinek led the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game. The strong point for the JV's came in their defensive play, allowing opponents to score only 43 pts. a game. Although the freshmen had a losing 3-7 record, coach Paul Eddie said that the players still improved every game. The cause for most of the losses of the team was poor field goal shooting. The frosh shot only 29% for the season. Randy Koranda and Stu Oden led the team in scoring with 8.1 and 7.9 pts. per game respectively. Dale Rasmussen handled the board work averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. Projects taught students that teachers aren't so bad, and showed that students can perservere through hard times. Through it all, there were some good times and probably some friends made. 55 Fireworks Mark Graduation Ceremonies i A rainy, blustery day was offset by fireworks, as the 1980-81 senior class said farewell. Principal Rorrald Hulse, Helen Hansen, and Mary Ann Lattimer (Board of Education members), presented diplomas to the graduation class. Class of '81 Looks to the Future No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings - William Blake The class of '81 is one of individuals, all with strong, seperate ideas and point of views. But as the school year draws to a close, we all reflect upon the events that made up our high school years. There are good memories and bad, achievements both individual and as a class. All of this comes together for us in this last year. This is the time for all of us to take all that we have learned and put it together as the first step toward our future. Most of the students attended the class meetings and decided what project they would be doing during the year. The Freshman may have been the youngest in the school, but they showed much enthusiasm throughout the year. Participating in year-round sports, trying out for plays, and joining different clubs, were only a few of the many new skills the Freshman took on, as well as making new friends along the way. 1. A few new faces were seen on the faculty staff: Mr. Earnest Kirkpatrick took over the band department and Randy Shada was in charge of physical education classes. Wahoo High School was chosen as a pilot school for Project IDEAS. Many curriculum meetings were held to develop this program for talented students. After 26 years of teaching, Mrs. Delores Benson retired this year. She was responsible for developing the school's special education class, which is one of the finest in the state. Meets Rising Challenge The members of the 1980-81 Diversified Occupations Class found themselves faced with the rising problems of No Help Wanted. Although this problem existed many of the energetic class found and held steady jobs year long. Businesses all over town took on members of the class, thus giving them valuable work experience. The class allowed students to get a few more hours of work in daily; thus enabling them to be paid more. D.O. student's occupations varied a great deal, some did agricultural work and others worked in community businesses like Tri Federal Savings and Cerny's Body and Paint. 1. Goodrich Dairy employee Tammy Bodfield smiles for a customer. 2. A friendly banker's assistant, Lori McPeck calculates cash totals. 3. Randy Banghart, a Husky employee, works on the brake system. 4. While working at Coast to Coast, Jim Jelinek separates some building hardware. 5. A knowledgable car salesman, David Piper discusses a deal with an interested buyer. 6. Senior Lisa Triplett compliments the beautiful jewelry at Loerch's. 7. Safeway employee Steve Mika checks a supply list with a regional manager. 8. Laurie Dockweiler adds a bit of youth and beauty to the Wahoo High School employee list. 81 I Am Not Afraid of Tomorrow For I Have Seen Yesterday, And I Love Today mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCELINE MISSOURI USA B
