S.C. Speeches Improve Quality The 1977-1978 Student Council was a year of improvement and change. For the first time candidates gave speeches to the entire school. These speeches gave the candidates a more serious attitude toward student council. One of the greatest changes concerned school dances. In the past, dances were always “the same old thing”. But dances such as “Halloween Harvest”, “Spring Fling”, and “Sadie Hawkins” added a new touch. Decorations carried out the theme. Streamers, straw-covered floors and hay bales made dances more special and exciting. The “Pig Kissing Contest” was an activity that included the entire school, something the Student Council strived for. Not only were the students involved, but so were the teachers. Other activities included the “Granite Guess”, selling hats and scarves, and giving the teachers flowers on their birthdays. Officers for student council were, president Karen Jonas, vice-president Lynae Barry, and secretary-treasurer Becky Olson. 2 8
