The new books have a variety of uses, as autograph albums, ego boosters, and memory joggers. For a member of the staff, thumbing through a yearbook evokes special memories: memories of taking pictures, making mistakes, waiting to use the darkroom, rushing to finish a layout on time, trying to be creative and original. Looking through a yearbook that he or she worked on, a staff member is reminded of all the things that went into its making. 1. Dale Fylstera confers with Tod Lindholm on his layout. 2. Lynae Barry, Beth Snyder and Kim Davis scan an old yearbook for ideas. 3. Karen Jonas and Kim Barry taking pictures. 6 1. Tod Lindholm and Kevin Bosley have a discussion with advisor Doug Watts. 2. Speeches Improve Quality The 1977-1978 Student Council was a year of improvement and change. For the first time candidates gave speeches to the entire school. These speeches gave the candidates a more serious attitude toward student council. One of the greatest changes concerned school dances. In the past, dances were always “the same old thing”. But dances such as “Halloween Harvest”, “Spring Fling”, and “Sadie Hawkins” added a new touch. Decorations carried out the theme. Streamers, straw-covered floors and hay bales made dances more special and exciting. The “Pig Kissing Contest” was an activity that included the entire school, something the Student Council strived for. Not only were the students involved, but so were the teachers. Other activities included the “Granite Guess”, selling hats and scarves, and giving the teachers flowers on their birthdays. Officers for student council were, president Karen Jonas, vice-president Lynae Barry, and secretary-treasurer Becky Olson. 2 8 1) Casey, Meg, and Beth state, “I’m a Pepper, you’re a Pepper, wouldn’t ya like to he a Pepper too!” 2) Student Council Members. The profits from the candy sale were used to purchase lumber to construct benches for placement around the school. Ms. Bakewell thought the sale was “very successful and almost as profitable as last year.” A few of the Art Club members attended the 12th Annual Capitol Conference Art Show held at the Gateway Mall in Lincoln. The Art Club also visited Joslyn Art Museum and the Old Market, both in Omaha. I. Mike Lindley works on a design in art class. 2. Ms. Bakewell talks with Pat Nelson and Betty Jonas. 3. Not only did they have their annual Christmas party with pinatas and tacos, but they also went and saw the Ballet Folklorico from Mexico. To hit the end of the year off with a bang, the club went to Trinis to eat mexican style at the Old Market in Omaha. 3 1. Tacos are a favorite of the Spanish Club members. 2. The setting took place in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, a small town that could be associated with any small town. The story centers around two neighboring families and their changing lives. It starts at a happy home with the usual conflicts, happiness of marriage and finally, the sorrow of death. The play consisted of one of the largest number of cast and crew members since it was performed in 1966. Many people commented that the play was very good and they would like to see more plays put on. I. Mitch Laudenhack, Tod Lindholm, and Jeanine Lindquist practice a scene from the play. 2. The ones who get credit for the excellents were Eric Dillow and Solveig Hansen for duet acting and Jay Rohman, Rene Welton, and Jeanine Lindquist for their speeches. At district the team received one good and six excellents, Again it was Eric Dillow and Solveig Hansen with duet acting and Annette Borreson, Jay Rohman, Mark Smith, Jeanine Lindquist, and Eric Dillow for their speeches. Both required large numbers of cast and crew members, many of whom became eligible for membership in the Thespian Charter which was started last year. The Drama Club members that were able to become Thespians were officially sworn in by Mead High School. The Drama Club had 20 members, the largest its been in years, while the Thespians Charter had 15 members. 1. Leann Torrens and Eric Johnson played the two lead characters, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock, respectively. “These two did an outstanding job of acting and singing the show into the hit it was,” commented Mr. Arp, head of the chorus production for the play. Twenty-nine students combined for the parts of the cast and chorus in this years school play. Many students were involved in the long hours of set making. The art classes and many others took time from usual class routine work to put together the sets. 18 1. Jim Hoppe and Steve Prochaska greet one another before rehearsal. 2. Another change made concerned the prom servers. This year they attended the dance as servers. The banquet was held at the Presbyterian Church basement. The meal was prepared by the Church Mariners. Class presidents Kim Peschel and Steve Buchanan gave short speeches followed by Supt. Willard Hunzeker. The prom servers entertained everyone with a short skit. Having prom at Starlite added to the theme, “The Edge of the Universe.” Decorations included numerous androids, a flashing tunnel, land rover and a silver spaceship. Finishing touches such as “blue” punch and “space trees” added to the mood. The ’78 Prom King and Queen were Mark Brodhal and Kim Barry. First attendants were LeAnn Torrens and Gregg Graff. The royalty danced to the music of “Atlantis.” 21 Band is Always Active The 1977-78 band had a very active year. They competed in many contests. The chorus also had a new director, Mr. Bob Arp. Mr. Arp commented “They performed pleasingly, but we still need work”. The chorus made up most of the cast of “Calamity Jane” a musical for the Spring Play. The chorus members did most of the singing. Chorus went to the District Music Contest and the Full Choir and the Swing Choir both got “Excellent” ratings. Members who did solos were Leann Torrens and Connie Kennedy with “Superiors”. Tammy Worm and Phil Monson were given “Excellents”. The Girl’s Trio received a “good”. It was established in hopes of bettering game attendance and over-all spirit because of a decline in pep club membership over recent years. Money raising projects were started very early in the year. These projects included a bakesale and selling jewelry and decorative trays. The cheerleaders sold greeting cards to help pay for new uniforms. A “Legs Contest” was won by freshman Davey Prokesh, pictures of entries “legs” were voted on by the school. Activities such as farmer day, hat day, and sock day offered a change from the typical pep club uniform. Farmer day was especially successful because of combined effort with the Student Council. Morning pep rallies were attended by the entire school for the first time in years, aiding the pep club’s battle to keep up school spirit. 29 Cheerleaders Encourage Spirit The cheerleaders had a very challenging year as school spirit had been dwindling in the past few years. Part of a cheerleader’s responsibility is to encourage spirit and many cheerleaders efforts helped to uplift spirit. Morning pep rallies were held and proved to be successful because not only the athletes and pep club attended, but the entire student body took part. Rallies were changed from the traditional order. Skits such as the “Munchkins” and “Santa and his Elves” brought new life to rallies. But the challenge remains. Each year the cheerleaders must bring new ideas to keep the students and followers spirited throughout the year. 1) Wrestling cheerleading squad. J. Syverson, T. Worm, D. Bonow, K. Banghart. Many money-making projects were sponsored by the lettermen. Some of this year’s projects were: the wrestling invitational, slave auction, gong show, cake and ham raffles, a dance, 1st annual W-Club Banquet, and a year-end party. W-Club purchased many needed items with the money raised. Items bought were: a leaper, football bags, and a stereo. 32 1. This record may be misleading and was no indication of the team’s improvement. Coach Mary Stefanowicz felt that “the girls showed improvement with each game.” The Warriorettes had a slow start, losing the first five games, but bounced back with wins over Ashland and Elkhorn. The team was well balanced with Juniors Beth Snyder and Jeanette Barry leading in spiking and scoring respectively. Seniors Evelyn Snyder and Shari Jansen showed leadership in all areas of play. Shari and Beth were selected to the Wahoo Newspaper All-Area Team. The Reserves finished their season with a 2-6 record. The Freshman Team went 1-5. 37 5 1. Mark Divis (67) blocks an Elkhorn pass. 2. The highlight of the season was the 22-8 victory over Gretna which snapped Wahoo’s 19 game losing string. The Warrior offense produced 307 yards total offense, despite a thunderstorm, and backs Chuck Tillman and Dave Croghan both finished with over 100 yards rushing. Croghan and Mark Brodahl received all-conference honors and John Divis, Wade Stewart, Mark Divis, and Chuck Tillman gained honorable mention. Croghan also led the team in tackles with 110. 1. Many of the teams top players were unable to see much action in freshman games because they had positions to fill on varsity. Coach Dick Tinglehoff expects these people to help next season in both attitude and numbers, as he predicts to have at least 60 team members next year. 41 “Oz” Decorates “77” Homecoming The “Land of Oz” was recreated in the Little Theater to become the theme of Wahoo High’s 1977 homecoming festivities. Decorations were coordinated with the ever popular fairytale scenes such as the Witch’s House, Emerald Castle and the Wizard of Oz. Homecoming Queen Evelyn Snyder and King Wade Stewart reigned over the occasion while dates danced to the music of “Thunderbird”. To add to the mood and spirit of the occasion the Pep Club girls made garters, spirit boxes, booster buttons and decorated lockers. Store windows were painted to raise spirit among people downtown. The Junior girls provided the entertainment at the afternoon pep rally portraying coneheads and Oz characters searching for a Warrior Homecoming victory against Lakeview. 42 1. Runner-up The WHS Cross Country team had a very rewarding season. Placing highly in meets, the Harriers ran on to qualify for state competition. It was the second time Wahoo High’s cross country team has gone to state, finishing 15th out of 18 teams. The most valuable runner award was given to Junior Tom Thompson. Thompson also broke the previous school record of 13:03 by 45 seconds on the 2.5 mile course. Coach Wright and his returning Harriers are looking forward to a successful season next year. 1. Losing three seniors, Dave Croghan, Steve Prochaska, and Kevin Bosley, the Warriors’ expectations for the coming year are high. Lettermen returning will be juniors Bob Hajek, Ted Triplett, and Tom Thompson, sophomore returnees are Chuck Tillman, Mark Divis, and John Ruzicka. Throughout the season the squad faced ranked teams such as Waverly, Gretna, Arlington, Elkhorn Mt. Michael, Norris, and Centennial. Even though the competition was tough, the team held its spirit until the last game against Gretna. The Warriors semi-delayed the ball and only trailed by four with 1 1'2 minutes to go, ending the game losing by seven. Leading scorer for Wahoo was Dave Croghan with an average of 12.3 points per game. The team’s rebounding was led by Mark Divis with John Ruzicka second, and the best field goal percentage was shot by Steve Prochaska shooting 41 percent. 1977-78 Warrior Basketball WE THEY 81 David City 50 63 Waverly 59 40 Logan View 52 48 Valley 58 61 Arlington 80 52 Elkhorn Mt. Having such a small squad allowed all players to have started in at least one game throughout the year. “This should provide real depth and motivation for next year’s varsity,” commented Reserve Coach Joe Weyand. All players were able to be leading scorers at one time or another throughout the season. The lack of depth allowed all to play a great deal, but resulted in problems when there was sickness or injury. The returning freshman offer great optimism for the forthcoming reserve basketball season. Several played on this year’s team. 1. Joe Weyand discusses game strategy 2. The battle for a rebound 3. Although the team didn’t finish sixth in the state as projected by the Lincoln paper, they nearly upset class A number one rated Lincoln Northeast in the Runza Lady Husker Holiday tournament and suffered only a two point loss to unbeaten Blair. Wahoo’s hopes of a trip to the state tournament ended when state runner-up Platteview downed the Warriorettes for the third time during the season in the district championship. All-state candidate Connie Kennedy was joined by junior Jeannette Barry on the all-area team and by senior Ev Snyder on the all-conference squad. Offensively the team was led by two excellent shooters in Marcia Novotny and Becky Kuenning. Amy Speichinger pulled down 81 rebounds to lead the team on the boards. Several of the team members gained valuable experience playing on the varsity squad. Coach Stefonawicz was pleased with the defensive hustle and the improvement displayed by many of the players. 4. 1977-78 Varsity Warriorettes: assistant coach Mary Stefonawicz, Ev Snyder,Cathey Prochaska, Jeannette Barry, Cathey I.arsen, Connie Kennedy, Beth Oden, Brenda Kuenning, Beth Snyder, Becky Kuenning, and Head Coach Harry Kasischke. 5. State Champions First in Wrestling Two Juniors, Mark Smith (28-0-1) at 112 lbs. and Bill Hoppe (31-0-0) at 119 lbs. this year became the first Wahoo wrestlers ever to win State titles. As two undefeated State Champions in consecutive weight classes they placed Wahoo on the map, as far as wrestling is concerned. A Sophomore, Mike Lindley (24-6) placed sixth in State at 98 lbs., and rounded out a highly successful lightweight trio. Warrior team honors included a first place finish in the Fremont Bergan Invitational, a first place finish in the Wahoo Invitational, and a sixth place finish in the State Tournament. The varsity dual record was 6-2-1. Bill Hoppe had the most pins, with 19, and set a new school record for fastest pin, in 14 secs.. Steve Banghart and Mark Smith tied in setting a new record for most takedowns, with 42 apiece. 1. Mike Lindley, sixth in State at 98 lbs. 2. Steve Banghart builds up from underneath. 3. Undefeated as a reserve, Kevin Christenson (4-0) compiled the best win - loss record. Chris Cejka (4-1), Dave Swanson (4-2), and Dave Snyder (4-2) were close behind. The team won four duals and lost four. Coach Doug Watts felt the reserves were hampered by inexperience. He added that this was the first year of high school competition for half of the squad. Several of the reserves were called upon to fill in on varsity in duals, which took away from reserve scoring. 60 1. Pat Mathis hits a sit-out. 2. Members of the reserve squad. With only nine girls on the team, Coach Mary Stefanowicz recognized the accomplishments of the girls. “The personal accomplishments and improvements by six of the girls were harmonious in breaking six school records.” The records that were broken were the shot put by Connie Kennedy, the discus by Kathy Swartz, the 220 yard dash by Jeanette Barry, the 440 by Brenda Kuenning, and both the 440 and 880 yard relays. With the loss of two seniors the expectations are high towards next year’s girl’s track season. Senior Connie Kennedy was undefeated in dual competition in her specialty, the shot put. She also placed second at the Blair Co-Ed Invitational and Capital Conference meets. Other surprising performances came from all three relay teams, 440, 880, and mile. They all placed at Blair and Conference, which was quite an accomplishment since the same four girls ran in all three relays. The Warriorettes were unable to qualify anyone for the Nebraska State meet at Districts. 1. The 880 Relay team gets the exchange off at Blair Co-Ed Invitational 2. Underclassmen dominated this season’s team as captains Greg Graff and Don Divis were the only seniors on the team. Although the squad failed to win a dual meet or a major meet there was much improvement by many of the members. To qualify for state, Ruzicka ran the 120 high hurdles in 15.1 and the 180 lows in 20.5. Miller threw the shot 53' 9 and 3 4 and Thompson ran the mile in 4:42.2. Most valuable team member was Ruzicka who, along with a dozen other lettermen, will return next season to help build a stronger track team. However, without a single senior in the group the duffers had a rough time in competition. The squad found some success in dual action, with the varsity going 3-4 for the season. The varsity letter winners were Jeff Braun, Todd Cejka, Chris Cejka, Kevin Christenson and Jim Martens. Todd Cejka had the lowest average score. 1. Members of the Boy’s Golf team. The exercises began with the processional “Pomp and Circumstance”played by the Wahoo Band. The invocation and address was delivered by Reverend Douglas R. Comiels, and a special musical selection was interpreted by the Wahoo High Swing Choir. The customary presentation of Honor Awards, Scholarships, Diplomas, and flowers followed. During this time, 15 of the students received these scholarships, the majority of which came from this area’s schools. After a short benediction, the new graduates walked out of the auditorium to the music of the recessional, some crying, others smiling, but all very happy. 70 1. All Seniors Great in ’78 There were mixed feelings as the 1978 Seniors last year came to an end. Many people expressed happiness as their school years were “finally over!” Others had feelings of sadness and emptiness as fu ture plans were not definite. All students had their fears of what was in store for them. Many planned to further their education with trade school, college, or Armed Forces. Farming and employment were also sought by some. The Senior year was a special one, with surprises, different happenings, and many new experiences. The 1977-78 school year saw the first ceremony for mid-term graduates and open campus during noon. Cluhs were much more active, with more projects to get students involved. Tradition was also changed when Prom was held out at Starlight. The privilege of leaving campus during free periods, and the new excitement of being of age to vote was also experienced by Seniors this year. Senior skip day was enjoyed with many Seniors going to Colorado and a concert, Kansas City and Worlds of Fun, or picnics to nearby zoos. 1978 was an active year, and many of the Seniors will always remember it and all the memories it holds. The tradition of having prom in the gym was changed and dance duties were asked of the prom servers. Many objected to these changes, but the juniors stood by their decisions. The juniors had no financial worries because of past fund-raising projects. They came into their eleventh grade year with nearly enough money to finance prom. The only project they participated in was the selling of magazines, records, and tapes. Even though juniors were involved in many activities, they still found time to “get rowdy”. The class of ’79 was a close-knit bunch of kids that always stuck together. So look out Wahoo, they still have one more year left. N. Akerson A. Borreson R. Christian C. Gottschalk K. Banghart J. Obtaining a drivers license is a venture into the adult world. The Junior-Senior prom remained on the minds of many as they sponsored several money making projects. Bake sales, pennant sales, and a car wash were among a few. The class of 80 proved to be one of many surprises. Every time something happened, you could bet there was a sophomore involved.
