hunderbird 11 Experience A Year Of Excitement, Adjustment Homecoming, Dances, Plays Held In New Auditorium 5 The 1976 yearbook staff found itself having a difficult and easy year. The new building offered many opportunities for interesting and unusual layouts and pictures. But the moving caused confusion that many times found the staff without equipment or wondering where to find an activity for pictures. Although no expressed theme was given to this year’s book, the staff tried to tie as many pages as possible into the ideas of newness and change. This theme can be found with the new facilities being used as a background for the traditional activities. 6 New Setting A Relief To Annual Staff 1. Todd Lindholm looks over a new negative. 2. Pep Club girls showed the athletes their appreciation by making spirit boxes, booster buttons, garters, and cakes for each guy. “Love is a Warrior Victory” was this year’s theme. Unfortunately the Warriors lost to the Cenntenial Broncos 28-0, causing low spirits for the Homecoming dance. Nevertheless, excitement still hung heavily in the air when Junior Julie Yarmon announced Queen Deb Barry and King Tim Shanahan as the 1976 royalty. Spirit Week Highlights ’76 Homecoming 1. DIRECTED BY: Bernie Clark ASSISTED BY: Connie Dillow and Bev Hudson STUDENT DIRECTOR: Gail Sabatka 14 Miracle Worker Opens Drama Revival The Miracle Worker was a sad, inspirational play about a family who had a handicaped little girl who was blinded when young. The eleven cast members met often to go over their parts in the play. I thought the play was very successful, I was happy with it and was pleased with the characters, set, and the student audience. They were very mature in their conduct, commented Director Bernie Clark. The highlight of the play was when Annie Sullivan, (Jeanine Lindquist) got Helen (Solveig Hansen) to spell words with her hands and to recognize things by the way they felt. The Miracle Worker was the first play done in years. It was well received by the audience and the cast and prop members who had lots of fun putting on the play. 15 Council Moves Rock, Attend Convention The Student Council achieved various things this year to make the school year more worthwhile. The year began with a two day convention at Omaha Tech. The convention was set up to exchange ideas and discuss improvements for the Student Council. The members sponsored the movie “The Other Side of the Mountain at Christmas. Admission was a can of food to be donated to the welfare office. The most significant project was moving the Wahoo High School rock from the old school to the new school. Next years election may prove to be different. Elections requiring a campaign may be the way to a new and improved Student Council, according to sponsor Jim Carlson. 1. STORY THEATRE, a play by Paul Sills, was the spring play performed by WHS students. The play acted as “a stimulant to the imaginations of the audience” said play director Bernie Clark. The story was a group of Grimms Brothers and Aesop’s Fables. The play involved mime and panto mime. Four plays, THE LITTLE PEASANT, HENNY PENNY, THE MASTER THIEF, and THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE, were performed from the eight originals. The play was originally chosen because of its economic advantages. It required little or no props, sets, or costumes. The actors and actresses, Marlys Olson, Diane Albert, Eunice Miller, Annette Borreson, Nancy Yarmon, Randy Pearson, Greg Graff, Casey Hengen, and Jay Rohman, played various characters from one person to an animal, or from a herd of cattle to a chicken. 20 Story Theater Fables In Pantomines 1. And it was a heavenly feeling that greeted the Juniors, honored Seniors, and faculty when they arrived at the banquet. Following a delicious meal and an entertaining skit presented by the Prom Servers, a dance was held in the gym. Steve Callan and Carrie Speichinger reigned as King and Queen for the occasion. Art Club Busy With Projects, Trips. This year the art club was one of Wahoo High’s most active organizations. The seventy-five enthusiastic members sold candy to earn $400 dollars first semester and in April hosted the Capital Conference Art Exhibit and Clinic at Gateway. Members also journeyed to Lincoln for a day of learning about batik and air brush. May 10 and 13 was spent in Omaha visiting different art museums and galleries. The leftover money from 1977 will be used for the promotion of art and school improvement. The art club has plans for a mural in the weight room. Also for the first time the Pep Club purchased flowers for the Senior night. The cheerleaders also had a busy year. They put on a cake raffle and sold candles to raise money for Cheerleading camp. Also the Wrestling Squad was increased to six instead of four for next year. This was a very controversial year for the pep club. There was even a question of dissolving the pep club and revising it to a spirit or booster club to include the boys. This idea did not pass however. The only change that took place was that Mrs. Skipton retired as sponsor. Mr. Baumert will take on the responsibility for next year. New uniforms will also be an inspiration for next year. I.
