Under the direction of the head cheerleaders, practices and meetings were held Tues-day mornings. The Pep Council had many decisions to make; one of them included eliminating the merit system. An extra effort was made by everyone to build pride and enthusiasm. PEP CLUB-7 CLOCKWISE BEGINNING RIGHT: Pep Club Council: FIRST ROW, L. Barry, K. Hengen, K. Piper, J. The festivities started with pep club decorating lockers on Monday and a parade downtown on Friday. Featured in the parade were the Queen and King candidates, the WHS marching band, Pep Club, W Club and all high school cheerleaders also participated. A short skit was presented by the junior girls as the rally ended with a victory cheer. Friday night the Warriors defeated the Columbus Lakeview Vikings 19-18. The coronation of Queen Phyllis Caha and King Larry Veskerna highlighted the Warrior's dance. Airborn provided music for the dance held at the Wahoo High school gym following the game. HOMECOMING-11 Staff Plans, Works Hard After deciding on a theme, the thirteen member Thunder-bird staff and advisor Doug Watts began the long task of piecing together the 1975-76 edition. Pictures had to be taken, copies written, headlines chosen, and all in time to meet the early deadlines. Every member of the staff was assigned a certain section to plan. Problems in planning included everything from bad films to getting people in the right place at the right time in order to take pictures. All in all, the experienced Journalism II class was successful in completing another part of Wahoo High history. CLOCKWISE STARTING ABOVE 1976 Annual Staff. FRONT RC Miller, R. Johnson, K. Sound Electronics in Lincoln provided a disc jockey and music. Later, the council organized a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family and a Christmas Party for the entire student body. A Christmas Dance was also held on December 23 with music provided by Todays Sound. Other activities included: selling hats and scarves, maintaining pop machines for both student and faculty members, and fund raising for charity. The Student Council was advised and sponsored by Mr. Carlson. CLOCKWISE, BEGINNING BELOW: 1976 Student Council, K. Stuart, B. Thege, C. Vermiline, B. Marshall, S. Stuart, K. Reit-majer, J. Miller, R. STUDENT COUNCIL-15 FHA Small But Strong FHA, with a new advisor Sharon Skipton, led an active, creative year planning parties, raffles, and exciting events. The annual goodies raffle was not held this year due to conflicts in scheduling. For the first time, a boy won recognition by winning the Betty Crocker Search for Leadership test. Chuck Hoppe earned the highest score from this school and therefore won a chance at scholarships and trips. As the year drew to a close FHA continued planning to build and promote their small organization. LEFT: Chuck Hoppe poses for picture after winning the Betty Crocker Award. Later the group attended a performance in Omaha of La Celestina, by the famous Spanish playwright of the Middle Ages Fernando de Rojas. Another special occasion featured travelogue talks by Mrs. Julie Hengen and Mrs. Darlene Barry. There were 24 underclassmen who saw action in either varsity or junior varsity games, including 15 freshmen. The warriorettes can look forward to next season with six returning letter winners, four of them starters from last year. The highlight of the season came when both the reserves and varsity defeated Ashland at Wahoo. These were very important games since Ashland is one of Wahoo's biggest rivals. Gwen Woita was selected MVP by the players and Pam Hageman earned second team all area. Warriors End Losing String Wahoo broke their 23 game winless streak on Homecoming night against Columbus Lakeview. They had earlier in the year snapped their 20 game losing string with a tie against Elkhorn. Jerry Divis scored the winning touchdown with only 19 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 19-18 win over Lakeview. The Warrior gridders finished with a 1-7-1 record losing to three state-rated teams. This year team captains were Vince Snyder and Daryl Johnson. Snyder was also voted Wahoo's outstanding back and allconference honorable mention and Johnson was named outstanding lineman and all-conference guard. The reserves finished the season with an 8-5 win-loss record, the best since 1972. Under coach Weyand, the team displayed signs of team work and determination. Steve Callan and Dave Croghan led the team in rebounds and total points respectively, while Sherm Johnson led in field goal percentage. The Freshman had a record of 5-6. Due to illness, many times the team played without some of their starters and subs. Brett Johnson led the team in total points with 209 and a per game average of 19. Johnson and Rob Miller led the team in rebounds. Coach Bruce Klemme expects these freshman to add depth to next year's Reserve and varsity teams. Junior Deb Barry pulled down a record breaking 133 rebounds for an 11.1 average. With only two senior starters graduating, the oncoming season looks profitable with seven returning letter winners. GIRLS BASKETBALL-63 Tracksters Gear For Future The track team didn't score well in meets this year, but many members did turn in good performances. It was a young team with only two seniors and three juniors, making next year's outlook brighter. Highlights of the season included sophomore Sherm Johnson's 6' high jump, good enough for a tie for second at district and a state meet berth. Junior Steve Callan set a new school record of 10:21.4 in the two-mile, junior Steve Herbener lowered his 100 yard dash time to 10.4 and senior Vince Snyder ran a best 53.9 in the 440 yard dash in his first year of high school track.
