Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1975 volume:

Moving On Sometimes I reminisce the past and I remember how I always wanted to be a cowboy...or an Indian when I grew up. Now I wish I could be professional journalist. or even the President! Such dreams! I’m still young with so much time to grow up. I should start figuring out which path to travel. If only I could have answers now. or even be able to predict the future, but I must be satisfied with what I have, and try to accomplish more. As I walk through life there may be things that make me stumble and stop, but I’ll just keep MOVING ON! CLASSES Seniors reach new goals Seniors of 1975 have experienced many things in their four years of high school. They’ve participated in many activities, sports and tests for the future. They received their class rings when they were juniors, did their duty as a prom server when they were sophomores, and were just “dumb” freshmen their first year at W.H.S. Now as Seniors, they were priveledged to plan their own skip day, prepare for graduation, and look back at all the years. By working together as a class, they have enriched their lives for the present and the future. Every night something to make or someplace to go in order to get ready for the 1974 Homecoming festivities. All this work seemed worthwhile in order to make this year’s Homecoming a success. The gym was brightly decorated to fit the theme “Warrior Fiesta.” The floors were also decorated with the Juniors winning first place for the colorfulness and creative depiction of a typical Mexican street. The traditional Homecoming parade proceeded downtown with a skit by the Juniors to fit the occasion. Although the dummy wasn’t burned because of the wind, spirit for the Homecoming game filled the air. After the game, the Fairfax Brothers entertained the students and their dates. At 11:00 Dale Akerson and Linda Torrens were crowned the 1974 Homecoming King and Queen. HOMECOMING 29 Cheerleaders Boost Warrior Spirit Wahoo High School cheerleaders were busy this year promoting spirit through the football, basketball, and wrestling seasons. Behind the spirit was plenty of hard work and planning. Under the direction of head cheerleaders Anne Graff, Mary Hansen, and Kim Bonow, the squads worked diligently to perform well at the activities and pep rallies. The cheerleaders helped to raise spirit by putting on special days such as sock day, hat day, and farmer day. Also, they started a new custom of occasionally feeding the wrestlers and basketball players breakfast on the days of meets and games to show their appreciation. 30 CHEERLEADERS t Varsity Cheerleaders, below. However, the old system was put back into effect for the rest of the year. Another change they made was new uniforms. Each member got a new sweater and emblem. The cheerleaders received new uniforms also. The evening began at 6:30 with the banquet at the Presbyterian church. The Jrs. and Srs. enjoyed a meal served by the prom servers and after they were entertained with a skit by the servers. Superintendent Willard Hunzeker spoke and candidates for 1975 Prom King and Queen were announced. After the banquet the students proceeded to the dance at the school where they were entertained by the group Freedom Road. The gym was decorated accordingly with tin soldiers, candyland express train and even a candy house where at 11:00 with the gym filled with spectators, the crowning of Queen Deb Christensen and King Todd Volkart took place. PROM 35 Students Plan 1975 Annual The students who worked on the Chieftain and Thunderbird were enrolled in third and fourth period Journalism classes. The W-Club sponsored the W-Club Invitational wrestling tournament. The weights used by the athletes in the weight room were bought by the W-Club. W-Club members received their letters at three pot luck suppers which included sports participants and their families. One dinner consisted of football, girl’s golf, and cross country members, the second was made up of girls basketball, basketball, and wrestling, and the third was given for golf, girl’s track and track participants. The booster club was a new organization this year. It was made up of Wahoo High boys sports members and their fathers or sponsors. Several speakers gave talks to the group. One was Mr. Boyd Epley, weight training coach for the University of Nebraska. He gave a lecture on different techniques and aspects of weight training. Another guest speaker was Mr. Glen Houdersheldt, of the Physical Fitness Institute of America. He explained and demonstrated the Apollo type of physical fitness. The main reason that the booster club was started was to get more parents and students interested in Wahoo High athletics during what is called by many a “down” period. W-CLUB CLOCKWISE: Left. Activities vary with the opportunities which become available in the area, but we seek communication with those who have traveled in Spanish speaking lands. One popular annual event is the construction of pinatas in preparation for the Spanish observance of Christmas. The group studies the custom of Spanish-speaking people, then sponsors a posada and pinata party. Another annual outing has been a field trip to study and explore Mexican Cuisine. STUDENT COUNCIL 45 Speech Team Small But Promising Under the direction of Mrs. Hudson, the 1975 - 75 speech team did very well at the contests they attended. Chuck Hoppe and LeAnn Holtorf received superiors at the Capitol Conference tournaments, then repeated their achievement at the District Contest along with the Oral Interpertation of Drama group. The speech team qualified for state in three categories, including Informative Public Address, Oral Interpertation of Poetry, and Oral Interpertation of Drama. Although none of them made it to the finals, they all performed very well at the state contest. Le Anne Holtorf and Scot Thompson. RIGHT, pose before Conference Contest. The warriorettes started off the season with two victories the first against Central and the second against Yutan. The win against Ashland was the highlight of the season, keeping them in bid for the Capital Conference Tournament. 50 Warriors Lose Games But Not Spirit The Wahoo High football team finished a disappointing season with a 0-9 record. The main reasons for the outcome of Coach Barry Miller’s squad was a lack of experienced players at backup positions along with the fact that there were only five senior team members on the squad. Seniors Mike Hattan and Todd Volkart were the only Warriors to be selected as All-Conference performers. Hattan, who was team captain, and Dale Akerson were voted the best lineman and offensive back by their fellow players. Volkart received the Wahoo Newspaper tackle trophy given each year. The freshman’s only loss was handed to them by Arlington. The squad recorded victories against David City. Norris. Waverly and Raymond Central. Eighth graders played a vital role in some of the games which gave them valuable experience for coming years as a Wahoo High School Warrior. The reserve team had a dissappointing season with an 0 and 3 record. Many underclassmen played on varsity so the squad had freshmen suited up and playing. Although the team finished with a 5 and 3 dual record and a second place finish at conference, the younger members of the group couldn’t play consistently. Senior Mark Simmerman was the only player to qualify for the State Tournament by shooting a 79 at districts. Although the Warriors finished fifth, they were only five strokes out of first. Next year looks very promising with three of the four varsity members returning. There will be a strong corp of reserves to help out future golf teams. ■I With only two returning lettermen. senior Shelli Kolterman. and junior Mary Hansen, the girls golf team ended with a record of 2-2 and placed seventh at state. Coach Graff commented that he was very pleased with the results at state, since we were the only Class B team that placed in the top ten. This was the first state meet ever held in Nebraska’s history. Leading the varsity this year with an average score of 53 were: Shelli Kolterman and sophomore Barb Thege. Shelli also had the lowest 18 hole score of 107 and Mary Hansen had the lowest nine hole score of 49.
