it was a good year . . . it was a year of organization in the fall and 'summeritis' in the spring. it was singing john denver songs and memorizing marching band music. it was staying up past midnight to paint the town with homecoming spirit and it was hitting the sack at eight the night before the big game, it was loud and sociable evenings and solitary hours of study, it was physics class playing with s inkies and psychology class analyzing life, during the year we grew not only older, but wiser, we came to better know not only others, but ourselves, now we look not only ahead, but back to what has passed. . . it was a good year. . wahoo high school, 334 n. linden avenue, wahoo, nebraska where it's at.. . features...................page 3 classes......................... 17 sports.......................... 37 activity........................ 57 organizations................... 63 music........................... 77 academic........................ 84 co-editors .... nanci hudson and barb hengen business editor.... linda hartsook advisor.... mrs. carol duncan 5 % f. to the sublime 7 we're in this together so .. . 8 there are times, after being with otners a|| gy |ong 10 to be alone. and a lot fun. We all have been involved in this very exciting school year, 1971-1972. Therefore we have tried to capture, through pictures, a fragment of the memories the year has held for each of us. We knew when we started that we couldn’t capture each and every little memory the year has held. Many meaningful things should have been recorded in the corners of the mind rather than in pictures. These can be even more lasting. We have, in the past few “golden” pages, set down in pictures sort of a summary of the year. We invite you to take a casual look at what follows . . . 16 classes What are Bill, Barb, Carol, and Sam. the senior class officers, doing out on the ledge? it was a good year. . . The Class of ‘72 entered the halls of WHS on the morning of August 30, 1971. From that moment on, there was never a dull moment. Although it took a few weeks to get used to books and studying, the new seniors pulled through in marvelous scholastic shape. Fall brought to the seniors an aura of fun filled days. Game days were filled with the anxiety and anticipation that only football season can bring. Chants and cheers echoed through the halls all day. Never short on ideas, the senior Pep Club girls not only planned skits for pep rallies, but went so far as to paint the streets of the town on Homecoming Eve to stir up spirit. The crisp autumn days kept everyone in good spirits. The onslaught of white winter days brought many activities into the already busy schedules of many seniors. Basketball and wrestling kept evenings full of vigorous activity for many boys and a lot of fans. Play practice kept avid drama students in their artistic element. Time and need of preparation saw many senior annual staff members working long hours to meet their deadlines. With the arrival of spring came the usual cases of “senioritis.” The warm days saw both girls and boys running after school for track. Golf team members invaded the course inpractice for their meets. Along with the always widely varied activities, many students found themselves involved with preparation for District Music and Speech contests. With May fast approaching, the Class of‘72 made plans to leave WHS behind. Their class treasury was used for the weight machine. Baccalaureate was held May 21, and graduation followed on the 22nd, as the seniors bid WHS a fond farewell. 18 DAVE BARSELL KEVIN BEYER ROSS BIRCH TIM BRODAHL PATTI BRONSON JOHN BROWN CAROL CAHA MARY COOPER 19 time has made us wise. . County Government Day, Class Rings, Junior-Senior Banquet. These were only a few of the many things that kept the 75 member WHS Junior class busy through the school year. The class really had their work cut out for them, as their project was to raise money for the Prom Banquet. The class of '73 also added their talent to membership on athletic teams and participation in art events. The entire class avidly looks forward to the coming school year, when they will enter the ranks as seniors at WHS. Finishing the 1971 football season with a 5-4 record, the WHS gridders tied with Centennial and Waverly for the second place title in Capital Conference. First place laurels were captured by Hickman-Norris. The Warrior’s admirable record came about as a result of eleven weeks of practice under the supervision of head coach Vernon Thomsen and Assistant Coach Dan Ready. The team relied heavily upon the talents of twelve senior teammates. Of these twelve, Tim Brodahl and Sam Tillman earned a position on the All Capital Conference team with Scott Daniels and Dick Divis earning letters of honorable mention. In spite of the team losing three backs and nine linemen the team still holds many favorable prospects for the coming season with many talented underclassmen coming up to fill the ranks of the Wahoo High School football team. the only thing worse than playing football . . . is not playing football.' 38 Rick Walker Mickey Rohman Bill Lindau Dick Divis Scott Daniels San Tillman Tim Brodahl Frank Larson Brad Hoppe TEAM STATISTICS WAHOO OPP. 1st Downs 76 82 Yds Rushing 1,068 1,013 Yds. Freshman Coach Eugene Jessen, Varsity Coach Vern Thomsen, and Assistant Coach Dan Ready were seldom found in this tranquil sort of mood during the football season. Busy with their regular teaching assignments, these teachers still found time to devote their talents to the many hours of rigorous practice required to turn out a top-notch football team. Such devotion and hard work earned for them the respect and admiration of their players. Tim Brodahl (above) was awarded the Wa-hoo Newspaper Tackle Trophy for 1971. The trophy is awarded each year to the outstanding defensive player on the football team. This was Tim’s second year to be awarded the trophy he previously shared with Charles Trutna. The 1971 Freshman football squad initiated the new frosh into the world of high school athletics. Although the team did not have a successful season, the players gained valuableex-perience that will be useful when they try out for the Varsity squad in 1972. Coached by Bob Cordes, the reserves not only improved their record compared to previous years, but displayed some fine examples of team work and ambition. The games provided excitement for both fans and team members. The all under-classman team should provide some good prospects for future varsity squads. Practice was held after school every day of the season, in addition to several Saturday and early-morning practices. As seen in the picture above left, practice drills kept all of the cagers in top shape. Sacrifice was also a key to being successful as student managers. Chuck Rezac and David Heiser (above, right) were managers for the ‘72 Warrior team. Below: The WHS Freshman team this year completed their season with a 0-11 record. The WHS Varsity Track team completed one of its most successful seasons ever during 1972. The team placed well in several major meets early in the season including invitationals at Blair and North Bend. They took 2nd place in the Capital Conference and 3rd place in District Competition. The team erased six previous school records. The WHS team qualified runners in six events at the State Meet in Omaha. The highlight of the season was when the Wa-hoo team took 2nd place in Class B at the state track meet to capture the runner-up trophy, a tribute well deserved. Seldom defeated all season, the two seniors and two juniors broke the school record, running a 1:33 flat at Districts. Their victory at the State Meet helped a lot toward the team's overall Class B second place rating. Far Left: Dick Divis shattered two school records in the 180 yard low hurdles and in the 120 yard high hurdles. Dick went undefeated into District action, but placed 2nd in both events at that meet. He redeemed himself at the State Meet, though, placing 3rd in the high hurdles and 4th in the low hurdles. A senior, Dick left on the records times of 14.6 in the highs and 20.4 in the lows. Left: Junior Steve Richardson ran the 100 and 220 yard dashes for WHS during 1972. Steve won both events at the district meet, and went on to place 3rd in the 220 and 4th in the 100 yard dash at the State Meet. He broke the school record in both events. Steve bettered the old 100 yard dash record by 3 tenths of a second, running a 9.9. He also set the new 220 record of 22.5. Tim Brodahl, a senior trackster, qualified for the finals of the State Track meet. This outstanding performance was in the 440 yard run. He placed well in several meets throughout the season. Tim also participated in the long jump and triple jump throughout the 1972 track season. 53 1972 WHS Varsity Golf Team: Dave Johnson. Jeff Herbener, Bill Lindau. Bob Kling, Gary Peters. On Friday, October 29, the game was cancelled because of the rain, but the dance was still held in the gym. The “Red, White, and Blues” were featured. The theme for that night was “Indian Autumn” with the gym decorated with pumpkins, gourds, and cornstalks. The second convocation “America the Musical” was presented by Ramon Burgin. Accompanying himself on several instruments, he sang a variety of folk songs from several different eras. Some of Student Council’s other achievements were; keeping up the pop machine and arranging to have another kind of pop made available. They avoided possible mix-up and confusion by numbering the parking places and they initiated the locker cleanup. It held no meetings, elected no officers, and sponsored no activities. Yet membership in it is much sought after. Members are the cream of the WHS scholastic crop. Scholastic Club is an honorary organi - zation composed of Sophomore, Juniors, and Seniors who. during the last semester of the past year, and the first semester of the present year earned a 3.5 average or above. This year the club boasts a membership of 47. This speaks well for the academic accomplishments of WHS students. 71 Debbie Texel, Crystal Olsen, Kathy Auch, JackPeetz, Mrs. Hanson, Carol Maynard, Jim Jackson. Their activities included the care of all Audio-Visual materials and the delivery of tape recorders, film projectors, filmstrips, and record players. During the year the Library Club members also attended a student assistance meeting in Lincoln. There were thirteen active members of Library Club for the ‘71-‘72 school year. They had three main projects, Project TOOT, Preparedness the Key to Opportunity, and Make Time Work for You. Project TOOT means “Think of others TOO!’’ The main goal was to cheer boys in Vietnam, the old folks, and the American Indians. The FHA year started early last summer with a slumber party for the freshmen girls and followed through with a bake sale and a car wash. The school year started with Installation and other activities followed such as: District Convention, Family Night, selling WHS flowers, Concession Stands, Cake Raffle, a Pizza Supper, a Multiple Sclerosis program, and State Convention. you mean we've got twenty cents? where were you when the sets were slashed?” both sides now Months of planning, anticipation, disappointment, anxiety, enthusiasm, and a childlike faith in themselves, their director, their school, and their community gave way February 26 and 27 to the WHS Drama Department’s production of Both Sides Now. The production consisted of a series of three one-act plays about life. The curtain opened to reveal Barb Hengen, Ross Birch, Jim Beyer and Mary Lynch in the third act from the Neil Simon comedy Plaza Suite. This selection concerns a mother and father’s many exasperating attempts to get their daughter out of the Plaza Hotel bathroom and send her on her way to the Green Room where her fiance, four “rented” musicians, and $200 worth of cocktail frankfurters were awaiting her marriage. The second one-act was entitled I’m Herbert by Robert Anderson. Barb Norenberg and Kevin Beyer played an elderly couple each of whom had had several previous marriages and a few feelings, but their minds were hazy as to details. Of course they didn’t realize how funny they were. The final play was an experiment in absurdist theatre successfully carried out by Marla Gerdts, Bill Lindau, Steve Smith, Nanci Hudson, and Jayne Norenberg in their interpretation of The Sandbox by Edward Albee. The play symbolically depicted the author’s views of death and the aged. Special accreditation went to Mr. Bob Cordes and the shop boys, Mrs. Carol Duncan, and the Wahoo Greenhouse for their aid in construction of the sets. The crew consisted of Laurie Barry, Cindy Albert, Julie Chapman, Cheryl Blankenbeckler and members of the cast. Light and sound effects went smoothly under the direction of Mr. Max McHale assisted by Mr. Eldon Barry. The cast showed their admiration and respect for their director, Mrs. Kathy Baker, by giving the best performances they could and by presenting her with a dozen red roses on closing night. The close of the curtain on February 27, ended a long period of fun and butterflies in which the personal rewards and enrichments far outnumbered the disappointments. . . and what of naomi? 75 Can anyone figure out why there are so many little huddles at a girls track meet? The year started off a couple of months early when the band took an exciting trip to South Dakota. The band participated in a parade and a marching contest. Perhaps the busiest member of the band on t h i s trip was their reigning princess Roe Jean Jennings. Next on the agenda was the Shrine Bowl Parade and marching as the featured band at half-time. A few weeks later the band traveled to Lincoln to march at the Nebraska state fair. They appeared at our state capital again to march in the Pershing State Marching Contest where they received a one. After all this, the band rounded out the marching season with many fine half-time exhibitions at the football games. When the marching season ended, the concert season began. The first event for the band was Conference Clinic at Gretna. After the clinic the band gave their winter concert. A snowmobile was raffled off at the concert and the proceeds went towards next summer’s trip to Canada. The next event for the band was Dis-78 trict Music Contest at North Bend. There they received a one. Twelve of the other six- teen entries also received superior ratings. While practicing for all these other events, the band also entertained many WHS basketball fans during half-time. To wrap up an exciting year the band gave their spring concert which was the final performance for the senior members. All in all, the 1971-72 Wahoo High School band season gave its members not only many, unforgettable memories, but also many valuable experiences. Music is offered at Wahoo High not only in the way of instruments but, also in the way of voices. This was evident by the chorus and swing choir activities. A concert in the ear 1 y fall kicked off the season for the vocal department. Later the chorus and swing choir g a v e another concert with Christmas as its theme. Soon after this the two groups attended Conference Clinic at Platteview. During all this the swing choir entertained many groups and clubs throughout the Wahoo community. District Contest was the final event for the chorus and swing choir. The chorus received an excellent and the swing choir was given a good rating. The WHS vocal department was under the direction of a newcomer to our school; Mr. Max McHale. ■ Back Row: Chris Pestal. Heading this department was Mr. Willard Hunzeker, WHS Superintendent. Mr. Ron Hulse, the new principal of our high school worked to keep things running smoothly. In addition to his adept talents at running a school he has also been blessed with a talented tongue. His trumpet and other imitations are mystifying to all. They say that behind all great men are women and this surely applies to Mrs. Dorothy Blair and Mrs. Darlene Jordon. The 1971-72 school board members were Bob Yarmon, Howard Pearson, Irma Beyer. Don Brodhal, Lloyd Hengen and Gene Piper. Mrs Dorothy Blair WHS School Board 85 Mrs. Kathy Baker language and business Mrs. Jocelyn Stromberg Mr Richard Schlager This year a new teacher, Mrs. Kathy Baker, not only taught Freshman Eng 1 ish but expanded a growing interest in dramatics. Under her guidance Conference Speech Contest was a success. A few of the highlights of the business department this year were field trips, guest speakers, and practical experiences of all types. Through the efforts of Mrs. Jocelyn Stromberg and Mr. Richard Schlager this department flourished. Together they kept their classes aware of the changing methods of t h e business world. Mrs. Beverly Hudson is our one and only foreign language teacher. She adds a special combination of sincerity and humor to enrich the learning environment. Two new additions in the English Department of WHS were Mrs. Carol Duncan and Miss Diane Nesler. Mrs. Duncan brought variety to her Sophomore English classeswith her individual study program which allowed each student to progress at his own rate and level. Whether it is hunting for “board stretchers’’ or doughnuts, he keeps his shop students amused. The intricacies of Mechanical Drawing are supervised by Mr. Bob Cordes. He also instructs Woodworking, a class in which the boys construct useful articles such as hog sheds, furniture, and necessities for the school. Mrs. Betty Jo Sennett introduced three boys to the world of Home Economics. All senior students worked in their own area of interest during 2nd semester. One new area was job interviews. A very helpful person to the annual staff was Mr. Adrian Bartek, who took and developed pictures. In his art classes some of the different media used were ceramics, oils, and charcoal. Mr. Max McHale directed the Mixed Chorus, Girls’ Glee, and Swing Choir. The Christmas program was enlivened by a dramatization “The Twelve Days After Christmas.” The instrumental department was inspired by Mr. Dfln Johnson. Through his efforts, the band received a superior rating at the Pershing Contest and several other competitions. Mr. Don Johnson Mr. Daniel Ready Mr. Burl Graff Mrs. Rita Peters math, science, and social studies In addition to coaching wrestling and girls’ golf, Mr. Daniel Ready taught World History, American History, and Modern Problems. Some aids used in his classes were films and informative games. He also had the use of a student teacher during the first semester. Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Advanced Math were instructed by Mr. Burl Graff. During his years at WHS he has coachedall sports. At present he serves as s e n i o r class sponsor and coach of boys’ golf. Students graduating from WHS feel that they are “Burl’s Buddies’’. The fields of Sociology and Psychology were introduced second semester by Mrs. Rita Peters. She also taught the General Math Class. Mrs. Peters has done a fine job during her brief stay at WHS despite having to move her materials from room to room each day. Through Modern Problems, Mr. Gene Jes-sen gave the seniors a new awareness of their world. In this class, he covered such subjects as environmental problems, current events, and income tax. Mr. Jessen also taught World Geography. Mr. Jared Ketner, the “mad scientist’’ of WHS, taught Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Math. Students in his classes learned valuable information by performing experiments, writing reports, and participating in class discussions. In addition to teaching General Science and Biology, Mr. Dennis Schall t a ugh t Physiology during second semester. HisPhysiologystudents learned much by the dissection of a coyote, opossum, and other animals. He also aided the students of two classes of B i o 1 o g y to type their own blood. Mr. Gene Jessen Mr. Jared Ketner Mr. Dennis Schall Mrs. Lois Smith, Mrs. Gladys Pearson, and Mrs. Marjorie Hunzeker reading and physical education Remedial reading is not one of the b e 11 e r known classes at WHS, but it is vital to many WHS and Neumann students. Mrs. Marjorie Hunzeker and Mrs. Lois Smith, with the assistance of Mrs. Gladys Pearson, made applicable to daily life the basic skills of reading. These classes receive finances and up to date ma-terials from Title I, a federally funded program. This year, Mr. James Sutherland served as the director of the Athletics Department and taught Boys’ P.E. throughout the school system. Some of his grade school and Jr. High students entertained during the half - times of s e v e r a 1 basketball games by displaying their skill on the trampoline and tumbling mats. Also important in the P.E. department this year was Mrs. Harriet Deitchler. Aside from teaching all phases of Girls’ P.E., she was a Pep Club sponsor and worked hard to make Homecoming possible. She left WHS during semester break. Taking on the responsibilities of Mrs. Deitchler was Miss Cathy Buell. In addition to these obligations, Miss Buell also reorganized Girls’ Track at WHS. Mr. James Sutherland Mrs. Harriet Deitchler Miss Cathy Buell Mrs. LeAnn Jeppson Mrs. Marie Bohaty Mr. Bruce Klemme special help Mr. Bruce Klemme, the guidance counselor at WHS, is always ready to listen to the student and help him in any possible manner. Mrs. Marie Bohaty helped prepare and serve the school hot lunches this year. Luann Caha, Carol Maynard, Jan Harnett, and Sharon Jelinekalso served food. Mrs. LeAnn Jeppson was a new addition to the WHS staff. As nurse, she ran a health check of the entire student body. Mrs. Kathryn Hansson has served as the WHS librarian for 14 years. She has the difficult task of being the junior class sponsor. Mrs. Faith Smith, another new face at WHS this year, assisted Mrs. Hansson in the library.
