Capitol Conference Co Champs The Wahoo Warrior 1970 Football Squad again made claim to a winning season by compiling a 5-3-1 record. Over a three year period the Warriors have stacked up a record of 20-4-2 and had sole possession of the Capital Conference, title for the past two years, but this year Wahoo and Ashland share the title after playing to a 14-14 tie in the final game of the season at Wahoo, which was to decide the championship. The Warriors began their season by traveling to Schuyler, Seward and David City for their first three games. Wahoo defeated Schuyler and David City, but was dumped by Seward. The Warrior’s first home game was with the Centennial Broncos. The Warriors defeated Centennial but the following week, again at home, were defeated by the Logan View Raiders in the 1970 Warrior “Mud Bowl.” The Warriors then traveled to Norris to slide past the Titans somewhat easily. The following week the Warriors returned home to host Blair for Wahoo’s 1970 Homecoming game. The game was played at Bishop Neuman’s field because Wahoo’s field was in extremely poor condition from the battle against Logan View. The Warriors were beaten. Next the Warriors traveled to Waverly to take on the Vikings. Wahoo came home with a victory and began preparing for its final game against Ashland. Both Ashland and Wahoo supported 3-0 records for Conference competition. This game proved to be the most important game of the year for both teams as the Conference title was to be decided, but neither team could over-power the other and the game ended in a 14-14 tie and the Conference title was to be shared. This is the third straight year that Wahoo has been Conference Champs. The WHS Football coaches for the 1970 season were Head Coach Vernon Thomsen, above center, who worked with the line; Assistant Coach Jim Sutherland, above right, worked with the backs, and Eugene Jessen, above left, who coached the Freshman.
