Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1971 volume:

Time TIME ... though the word defies definition, we are always amazed by the speed with which it passes. We are freshmen, walking through the doors of WHS for the first time, and before we know it, the band is playing Pomp and Circumstance, and we are ready to march down the isle with our classmates for the last time. So many moments have come and gone, so many we could not quite grasp them all. And for all the small things, we each will have our own different memories. For some of us it was sports, for others music, for others dramatics, for others the making of this book, and for others different activities happening in and out of this school. Here is a record of the 70-71 Warrior School year. Much of it is here; much is not. We have tried to capture parts of it. We hope that in the years to come this book will bring to you again some of the things we did at WHS back in that wonderful 70-71 school year. The Thunderbird staff dedicates this book to our Principal, Mr. Kenneth Ackermann for his many years of dedication to Wahoo High. Mr. Ackermann came to Wahoo High as a young man and served the community for more than 18 years. He was our teacher, coach, principal, and on more than one occasion our superintendent. He was the kind of teacher who did not complain about the work, but only asked what needed to be done. So quickly passes by How can we forget the moments, When we thought this time, Would never come. We, the Seniors of ’71, met the pace of life. Our lives expanded to include others, to do new things, to express creativity, and to experience belonging. These growing experiences were met in many ways, but within ourselves, thirsting for new thoughts and meanings. What are we here for? What will we do? Where will it all end? We know life continues. From now on the choice is ours. We ourselves must decide where we will go and what we will do ... Alone. The way is no longer chosen for us. Life is what we will make it by knowing and understanding ourselves and others. When we look back, will we experience regret or satisfaction? Only the choice we make will determine this. For we, as Seniors, have only begun to live . . . Capitol Conference Co Champs The Wahoo Warrior 1970 Football Squad again made claim to a winning season by compiling a 5-3-1 record. Over a three year period the Warriors have stacked up a record of 20-4-2 and had sole possession of the Capital Conference, title for the past two years, but this year Wahoo and Ashland share the title after playing to a 14-14 tie in the final game of the season at Wahoo, which was to decide the championship. The Warriors began their season by traveling to Schuyler, Seward and David City for their first three games. Wahoo defeated Schuyler and David City, but was dumped by Seward. The Warrior’s first home game was with the Centennial Broncos. The Warriors defeated Centennial but the following week, again at home, were defeated by the Logan View Raiders in the 1970 Warrior “Mud Bowl.” The Warriors then traveled to Norris to slide past the Titans somewhat easily. The following week the Warriors returned home to host Blair for Wahoo’s 1970 Homecoming game. The game was played at Bishop Neuman’s field because Wahoo’s field was in extremely poor condition from the battle against Logan View. The Warriors were beaten. Next the Warriors traveled to Waverly to take on the Vikings. Wahoo came home with a victory and began preparing for its final game against Ashland. Both Ashland and Wahoo supported 3-0 records for Conference competition. This game proved to be the most important game of the year for both teams as the Conference title was to be decided, but neither team could over-power the other and the game ended in a 14-14 tie and the Conference title was to be shared. This is the third straight year that Wahoo has been Conference Champs. The WHS Football coaches for the 1970 season were Head Coach Vernon Thomsen, above center, who worked with the line; Assistant Coach Jim Sutherland, above right, worked with the backs, and Eugene Jessen, above left, who coached the Freshman. As the big night drew near, you could see the transformation of the gym to a wilderness scene. A lone warrior paddling a canoe pointed the way to the throne. Changes from last year were apparent, not only in the decorations but in the attire of the students. Minis and maxis and bell-bottomed pants could be seen all over in lieu of the usual skirts and sweaters. Excitement arose as the eight candidates, JoAnn Stogdill and Larry Ericson, Diann Bergman and Roger Harders, Pam Hass and Jim French, and Linda Wedberg and Ron Miller, made their way to the throne for the crowning of the 1970 King and Queen. The crownbearers were Amy Flessner and Patrick Cermak and giftbearers were Jodine Harders and Allan Mahrt. To conclude the night’s activities, Pam Hass and Roger Harders reigned as the new Queen and King. And When the Evening Comes, We Smile Everyone enjoyed the music of the Elysian Fields. Warrior Wrestlers 1970-1971 The 1970-1971 Wahoo High Wrestling Squad ended its season with an impressive record of 6-2-1 along with the Capital Conference Championship for the third consecutive year. The potential of this young team is evident in the personnel of the varsity squad which was made up of only 1 senior, 5 juniors, 5 sophomores and 1 freshman. The Warrior matmen took the Bergan Invitational Tournament and the Capital Conference tournament. Chuck Trutna, the only Senior Varsity member, displayed his experience by turning in the fastest pintinte for the season with a time of 19 seconds. Sophomore wrestlers, John Arney and John Trutna show very promising careers ahead by turning in some impressive showings. John Arney turned in the most wins for the seasons and the most championships with 25 wins and 5 pins. John Trutna had the most pins of the season with a total of 12. According to Coach Sutherland, the most improved wrestler was Russ Keller a promising sophomore. 28 Coach Jim Sutherland and only Senior wrestler Chuck Trutna display trophies. Warrior Basketball 1970-1971 Under the direction of Coach Bruce Klemme, the Warriors had by the end of the 1970-1971 basketball season gained the respect of themselves, their opponents and their followers. In terms of wins and losses steadily after the first half of the season. Victories over Ashland and Blair along with a district win over Plattsmouth made the Warrior season a successful one considering a very poor early season showing. Beating Ashland on the Bluejay’s court was possibly the high point of the season. The victory was really more important than the net which an Ashland officer of the law was able to keep secure for the Blue-jays. Seven Seniors played their last season for the Warriors. They were Mickey Bullock, Steve Douglas, Jim French, Randy Holtorf, Brad Jensen, Gary Odvody, and Lee Kramer. French and Holtorf were captains and both were mentioned in the All Area Honors. Holtorf also was honorable mention on the All Capital Conference team. Junior Sam Tillman was selected on both the all area and Capital Conference First teams. He led the team in scoring with 258 points. The Reserves enjoyed eight wins against six defeats. Led by Steve Richardson, sophomore, the Warrior Reserves offer hope for a good 71-72 season. The Wahoo High School “W” Club was comprised of Wahoo High boys who have earned a letter in any official sport in which the school competes. These sports include football and cross-country in the fall; basketball and wrestling in the winter; and track and golf in the spring. “W” Club members can be recognized by the letter “W” worn on jackets and sweaters. The big event in which the 1970-71 “W” Club was involved was the “W” Club Invitational Wrestling Tournament. This tournament was a one day meet which had 15 teams competing. The meet was conducted entirely by club members and their sponsors. The club also ran the food and drink concessions at WHS games to provide funds for other activities. Another big event in the W Club year was the sports banquet. This project was done in conjunction with the Wahoo High Pep Club. 1970-1971 W-Club Officers were Larry Erickson, Secretary-Treasurer; Roger Harders, President; Jim French. Vice President. o Time . . . To learn about others To find understaruling and respect Among them. To know that without them, You never would have made it through. ACADEMIC Seated: Lurine Little, Dorothy Blair, Secretary. Standing: Gene Piper, Robert Yarmon, Derrel Ludi, Howard Pearson, Archie Larson. Because of unusual circumstances, the Board of Education changed during the ’70-’71 school year. After considerable controversy, R. E. Davis was dismissed as superintendent in March. K. P. Ackermann, high school principal, finished the year as acting superintendent. Mr. Ackermann’s February resignation was not effective until the end of the school year. In January Mrs. Lurine Little resigned from the school board. In April Derrel Ludi and Archie Larson resigned from the board. Mrs. Irma Beyer, Mr. Donald Brodahl, and Mr. Lloyd Hengen were appointed to the three vacancies. Administration Wonder why Mr. Ackermann looks like this? Maybe someone has stolen his door again. 42 It must be good news! Mrs. Dorthy Blair was kept busy throughout the 1970-71 school term as secretary to the superintendent and also secretary for the school board. Working in Office B could become pretty hectic at times but Mrs. Darlene Jorden, secretary for Mr. Ackermann, always seemed to keep things running smoothly. Keeping a school clean isn’t always an easy job, but with the help of head janitor, Mr. Ed Lehr, and his assistant Mr. Benny Judd. WHS pulled through once again. Bills! Bills! Bills! W.H.S. Personnel That's a vacuum cleaner Mr. Judd is holding. Too much time at the water fountain. 43 Brian always has the right answer. Mr. Graff likes this. What clown could amuse Miss Clark so? She had many from which to choose. Where there’s Science, there’s Math. Mrs. Bohaty, somber? Pensive? Or just tired? 44 The Eternal World Of Math and Science Mr. Burl Graff has been with the WHS teaching staff for 16 years. He feels the only change over the past 16 years in the students has been their appearance. Mr. Graff assisted the Senior Class as a sponsor and was also the Golf coach. The subjects he taught during the school year were Algebra I, Geometry, and Advanced Math. Mr. Jared Ketner was kept busy with a variety of classes. He taught two Chemistry sections, one Physics section, and two classes of Algebra II. Mr. Ketner has been with Wahoo High School for three years. He was also a sponsor for the Junior Class. New to the WHS teaching staff was Miss Kathleen Clark. She taught several classes of Biology and was a Pep Club sponsor. Mrs. Shirley Bohaty was one of the Math teachers for Wahoo High. She taught one class of General Math, and the remainder of the day was spent teaching Math for the Junior High. Will Daniels foul it up? Rohman isn’t sure; Mr. Ketner can’t bear to look. 45 Now see here, Linda . . . Mr. Schlager explains— Business And Journalism Mr. Jack Tillman had a busy schedule this year. In the morning he taught Special Ed at West Ward and in the afternoon he returned to the high school ttf teach 3 classes of Journalism. Mr. Tillman spent many hours as the advisor for the THUNDERB1RD and CHIEFTAIN staff. Mrs. Jocelyn Stromberg taught Typing 1, Shorthand, and a new combined class, Office Practice-Typing 11. She was also a sponsor for the Junior Class. A new addition to the Business Department at Wahoo High was Mr. Richard Schlager. Mr. Schlager taught Bookkeeping, Business Organization, General Business, and Typing 1. Along with a few members of the Bookkeeping classes, Mr. Schlager helped with scoring at the Soil Judging Contest at Mead. He was also a Freshman Class Sponsor. Now who can make Mrs. Stromberg smile? Mr. Bartek draws a complex house. Mr. Johnson to the rescue. The Fine Arts Are Stressed Mr. Sayre directs a group of musical chairs. Mr. Don Johnson was the director of the 1970-71 Wahoo High Marching and Concert Band. Mr. Johnson also directed Stage Band and the instrumental groups for contest plus sectionals for Junior High and elementary schools. Mr. Jeffre Sayre was in his 2nd year as Wahoo High’s vocal music teacher. Mr. Sayre directed the production “Tell It Like It Is” and directed Chorus, Swing Choir, and Girls Glee, the largest since the 1967-68 school year. Mr. Sayre was kept busy with arranging concerts, music contest numbers and several vocal engagements. He was also a Senior Class Sponsor. Mr. Adrian Bartek was Wahoo High’s new art instructor. He was the art instructor for the Junior High and elementary grades and an adult art class. Mr. Bartek’s classes took a number of excursions during the school year and instructed his classes in many skills including ceramics and painting. He was also a Junior Class Sponsor. 47 I’m just an ordinary man! Teaching in the Industrial Arts Department was Mr. Robert Cordes. He taught Shop I and II, Mechanical Drawing, and Phys. Ed. Mr. Cordes was the Warriors’ Cross Country and assistant Basketball Coach. Mr. James Sutherland was WHS Wrestling Coach and assistant Football Coach. American History, World History, and sea history were the subjects Mr. Sutherland taught. Coaching Freshman Football and Basketball during the 1970-71 school year was Mr. Eugene Jessen. He taught three classes of Modern Problems and also World Geography. When not driving his purple Volkswagen with pink tinted windows, Mr. Vernon Thomsen was busy teaching Metals, Mechanical Drawing and Arts and Crafts. Mr. Thomsen was WHS Varsity football and Track Coach. Surely there must be a mistake? $ea stories told by an old sailor who doesn’t know fact from fiction. Old Coaches And Mr. C. It’s the only permissible way to relieve my inner hostilities. 48 Mrs. Lois Smith and Mrs. Marlys Richardson were remedial reading teachers at WHS during the 1970-71 school year. Wahoo High School had 37 Scholastic Club members last year. To be eligible for membership, students had to maintain a 3.5 average during the second semester of the previous year and the first semester of the following year. Each member receives a pin in recognition of their outstanding achievements. Freshmen are excluded from membership. The Student Council for the 1970-71 school year sponsored several convocations this past year. These included one given by General Motors, another by the University of Kansas Concert Bureau featuring a couple performing several acrobatic maneuvers, and one by Mr. George ValGeorge on E.S.P. The W.H.S. Student Council sponsored the Freshman Mixer at the beginning of the school year and co-sponsored, with Neumann High Student Council, the Christmas Dance, Dec. 22, 1970. (The stuffed animals basketball game. are the ones without hair.) 93 94 Farewell The puce of life quickens. Our lives expand to include others; a few special ones and some special places ---other ones and other places. But four years is a long time ---too long to completely forget. We look around and ask on graduation night —Where did it go? We worked, we goofed off —but for four years? Then we look the other way —into tomorrow. Suddenly we’re not so tall as we thought we were And not so smart. But we find that somehow We learned something at Wahoo High: something we wouldn’t have had without the teachers and administration, without our fellow students —a direction into that uncertain tomorrow. A decision for us to make to go this way or that is ours ---ours alone. Our future can never be so dark again Though the world, time, and us will change. There are many ways to go, more now than ever. Everyone should chose one way then move out as if your life depended on it .. . and it does! 95 Senior Activities BARSELL, DONALD HOWARD (Don) Chieftain Staff 4.
